Tennessy Willems

9.1

First time here? Take the 30-second tour of how Restaurantica works!

Tennessy Willems sounds like one person, but the name joins two children and the pizzeria their parents built around them. Lisa and Jochen Braun found their model in a New England wood-fired restaurant, then brought the idea to Hintonburg and the former Melrose Groceteria. The premise was direct: a small dining room, a wood oven, locally minded ingredients and pizza combinations with enough character to carry a meal. Nearly sixteen years of Wellington Street service have turned that family marker into a neighbourhood one, with Lisa Braun still shaping the restaurant as its owner. The oddness of the name does useful work, making the family origin visible before a diner knows anything about the menu. Every order still goes out under the two children’s names.

House-made tomato sauce and fior di latte supply the menu’s recurring grammar, not its ceiling. The Margherita states the base plainly with parmesan and fresh basil. From there, Wild Boar moves through local sausage, caramelized apple, sage pesto and two-year-old cheddar, a combination that balances savoury weight with sweetness and herbs. Elmdale holds closer to familiar pizza territory—Genoa salami, roasted peppers and cremini mushrooms—but keeps the build precise rather than crowded. Helen’s turns the same meal in another direction with baby spinach, parmesan, goat cheese and pine nuts. Each pie has a clear centre, so the wood oven reads as a cooking method instead of a decorative claim. Helen’s is finished with lemon juice, a small decision that keeps a shared table from getting stuck in one register.

That range makes ordering feel like composition rather than coverage. A table can begin with Margherita, use Elmdale as the bridge, then let Wild Boar supply the house signature. Bianco puts pear, walnuts, speck and gorgonzola into a sweet-salty exchange, while Napoletana answers with anchovies, capers and red onion. The House Salad brings pickled shallots, apple, blue cheese and pumpkin seeds when the pizzas need a sharper counterweight. A short pasta list adds comfort without pulling the restaurant away from its centre: spaghetti Bolognese uses organic ground beef, while mac and cheese folds bacon and mushrooms into a cheddar-tarragon sauce. Even the richest pie has a deliberate place. Ciccio layers saucisson sec, smoked mozzarella, cheddar, fior di latte and parmesan, a finish better suited to the end of the sequence than its opening.

For a restaurant inspired by a pizzeria far from Ottawa, Tennessy Willems has become emphatically local. Wild Boar names its sausage as local, and the original philosophy connected nearby farming with preparation done in-house. The former groceteria gives the address a history that predates the pizzeria, while the family-built name makes continuity personal rather than merely architectural. Lisa Braun’s continuing ownership ties that opening idea to the restaurant as it operates now. Helen’s adds another Wellington Street thread: its name carries the memory of an earlier lunch counter, while spinach, goat cheese, pine nuts and lemon keep the connection on the plate.

The compact dining room and focused menu make Tennessy Willems flexible without making it anonymous. Reservations give a planned dinner a foothold, while takeout and delivery let the same pizza order serve an ordinary weeknight. Daily happy hour from four to six gives the early evening its own rhythm rather than standing as a one-off promotion. A group can keep the meal classical with Margherita, stretch it toward Wild Boar, or put Helen’s between the richer pies; the menu is concise enough for those contrasts to remain legible. The restaurant serves every day, but its usefulness comes from more than availability. It offers a family-rooted neighbourhood place where the shared order still rewards a little thought. At four each afternoon, happy hour begins, and the wood oven carries Wellington Street into dinner.
