Locomotive Espresso

8.7

First time here? Take the 30-second tour of how Restaurantica works!

The coffee program runs through Pilot Coffee Roasters, and the house pour tells the whole story: Academy Blend on the Brewed Coffee, Heritage Blend on the Espresso, a rotating single-origin or feature on either side when the bar wants a different cup that day. Locomotive Espresso has built a coffee bar where the bean is the headline act, and the order ladder is designed around it. The Cortado is the cleanest small-format demonstration — a double shot with equal parts steamed dairy in roughly four and a half ounces — short enough to keep the espresso in focus, dressed enough to read as a proper coffee-bar order. The retail shelf carries Pilot whole bean alongside the prepared drinks, so the cup at the counter and the bag on the way out are the same conversation.

The menu stretches well past the espresso lineup. The breakfast and lunch board carries a Kickstarter Breakfast Sandwich, a Breakfast Burrito, a Smoked Salmon Bagel, a Hummus & Tomato Bagel, a Tuna Melt, and a Grilled Cheese — daytime food sized for a working visit rather than a quick errand. The drinks side picks up a Matcha Latte, a Golden Milk, a Peach Piefizz, and a French Toast Latte that lands as the house signature when a guest wants the bar's full creative range. The pastry case runs Apple Cheesecake Danish, Butter Tart, Tahini Brownie, an Earl Grey Loaf, and an old-fashioned vegan glazed donut, with a gluten-free bakery section running alongside the standard order. The Pilot whole-bean shelf and a Special Offerings category round out the storefront, so a guest can leave with beans, a pastry, and a brewed coffee on the same ticket.

What the menu adds up to is a daytime cafe that has chosen breadth on purpose. Pilot anchors the bar, the pastry case earns its own visit, and the breakfast-and-lunch section is built to catch a table that wandered in for a cup and stayed long enough to need a plate. The cafe identity — railway-themed character on the storefront, a community-focused regular crowd, an outdoor patio for summer ordering — points to a guest who treats the visit as the morning rather than a stop on the way somewhere else. The third-place language Locomotive uses for itself, coffee for the community, is borne out by the way the daytime menu refuses to choose between coffee bar and neighbourhood diner.

The cafe opened in 2014 on Pall Mall Street in London's downtown core, a few blocks off Richmond. Local reporting at the time named Jill Wright as owner and described the original cafe as a community haven for artists, students, and professionals — a third-place idea Wright spoke to directly when she explained why the cafe was built the way it was. A second location followed on Ridout Street South in Old South six years later, extending the brand into a second London neighbourhood without altering the coffee program. The Pilot Coffee Roasters relationship dates to the founding and has held through both addresses.

Across the two London cafes, Locomotive runs the same daytime operation at several different speeds. A morning Cortado and an Apple Cheesecake Danish at the counter. A laptop hour over Brewed Coffee and a Butter Tart. A weekend table running a Breakfast Burrito and a French Toast Latte while the patio fills up. Pall Mall keeps the original-cafe character downtown, and Old South gives the brand a second daypart in a different neighbourhood, but the order at the bar — Academy Blend or the rotating feature, Heritage Blend or the single-origin shot — is the same conversation at both addresses. Eight to four, every day of the week.

Unique Selling Points

Three things this kitchen does the rest don’t

  1. 01

    Pilot Coffee Backbone

Brewed coffee and espresso listings both point to Pilot Coffee Roasters, giving the coffee program a clear house identity.

  2. 02

    Daytime Cafe Breadth

The menu stretches from espresso-bar drinks into pastries, bakery categories, breakfast, and lunch, making it useful beyond a single cup.

  3. 03

    Neighbourhood Third Place

Local coverage and the cafe identity both frame Locomotive as a community coffee shop rather than a generic counter stop.
