Selo Cafe + Wine Bar

9.4

First time here? Take the 30-second tour of how Restaurantica works!

Selo runs as two places sharing one kitchen. Through the day it is a Hess Village cafe built around a coffee-and-sandwich stop; three evenings a week it opens as a wine bar. That split is the practical thing to know before a first visit — arrive before four and Selo is a daytime counter with a sharper menu than its Hess Street front lets on, and arrive Wednesday through Saturday after five and it settles into somewhere to sit with a glass. It opened in 2024, a few doors into the village's bar strip in downtown Hamilton.

The sandwiches carry the daytime menu. The Breakfast Sandwich is the clearest first order: a fried egg on an Artie's bun with house tomato jam, garlic aioli, cheddar, and arugula, with a hash brown or a house breakfast sausage available to move it from light to full. The Roast Beef Sandwich is the lunch-side answer — house roast beef, horseradish grainy mustard mayo, gruyere, and crispy onions on the same Artie's bun — and it hands the board more weight than a coffee-and-pastry stop usually carries. A Smoked Salmon Toast on sourdough with whipped cream cheese, capers, red onion, and dill, plus the named Selo Scramble, fill out a lineup that stays short and reads deliberate.

The drinks are built with the same intent. Coconut Coffee is the signature on the espresso side — iced with in-house sweetened coconut cream, or served warm with oat milk, coconut cream, and cinnamon — and it does the work a standard latte can't, giving the cafe a drink that belongs only to it. The Raf is the softer counterpart, an eight-ounce espresso frothed with cream and vanilla syrup for something gentler than the coconut. Neither is a novelty. Both point to a coffee menu treated as a program rather than an afterthought, made in-house down to the coconut cream itself.

The pastry case stays compact and useful rather than reaching for a full dessert program. A Cheddar Scone, a Chocolate Chip and Tahini Cookie, and a gluten-free Raspberry Cheesecake Blondie give the coffee order something better than a throwaway add-on, which is the right scale for a cafe this size. The counter suits the way people actually use it — a quick sandwich and a Coconut Coffee to go, a solo sit with a pastry, a longer Hess Village afternoon that drifts onto the patio. Ordering runs through pickup and delivery as well as the front counter, so the sandwich board travels when the table is at home. Nothing on the daytime menu asks for a group plan, which is part of why it holds up as an everyday stop.

Then the register changes. The cafe runs every day, eight in the morning until four; the wine-bar hours are the newer layer stacked onto the back half of the week. Wednesday through Saturday, that half takes over after five, and the same storefront that sold sandwiches at noon pours for a slower, more social evening, sometimes with live music on the calendar. It is a genuine second identity rather than a late-night add-on, and it gives Selo more range than a daytime-only cafe — though the food a first-timer can count on still lives in the breakfast, lunch, and coffee hours.

What holds it together is Hess Village, a short downtown strip where a storefront has to earn a second visit rather than a passing one. Selo's answer is a daytime menu specific enough to remember — the tomato jam, the coconut cream, the Artie's bun — attached to an evening it can grow into. For a place this new, that is a workable order of operations: be a good cafe first, and let the wine bar follow the people already coming for the sandwich.

Unique Selling Points

Three things this kitchen does the rest don’t

  1. 01

    Cafe-First Wine-Bar Identity

Selo's strongest shape is a daytime cafe that can stretch into a more social evening room. That dual identity gives it more range than a simple coffee stop while still keeping the current food story grounded in breakfast, lunch, and pastry.

  2. 02

    Sandwich-Led Daytime Menu

The Breakfast Sandwich and Roast Beef Sandwich do the heaviest lifting because they give Selo two clear food anchors. They make the menu feel intentional even before the drink program and pastry case enter the visit.

  3. 03

    House-Style Coffee Details

Coconut Coffee and Raf give the beverage side enough definition to feel like more than a standard espresso board. Those drinks are the best way to understand how Selo turns a quick cafe stop into something more memorable.
