River-Room Restaurant

Take a window table at River-Room and the view does half the work: the Detroit River runs wide across the glass, with Detroit's skyline stacked on the far bank. This is the waterfront dining room of the DoubleTree by Hilton in downtown Windsor, and it treats that outlook as the centre of the experience — breakfast, lunch, and dinner all framed by the same water. The kitchen leans Mediterranean and upscale-casual, open early and running late, which makes River-Room equally suited to a seven o'clock business breakfast, a slow weekend brunch, and a celebratory dinner that never demanded a formal occasion to justify it.

Dinner is where the kitchen shows its hand, and the clearest thread is seafood. Deep-fried calamari opens the table, tiger prawns and a bright tuna crudo carry the middle, and a seared salmon fillet anchors the composed mains — a Mediterranean-leaning progression that gives an order its centre of gravity. It is not the only current on the menu. A seafood risotto and a seafood linguini keep the theme going into the pastas; a Margherita pizza and familiar plates like fettuccine alfredo hold the Italian side; hummus and a Greek salad nod to the eastern Mediterranean. It is the loosest way to use the place — a few plates and a glass at the water rather than a full sit-down meal. The setting carries it. Broad river and skyline views give the dining room its sense of occasion, occasional live music lifts the tempo on the right night, and the service stays attentive and unhurried whether the visit is two pinchos or three courses.

What River-Room offers downtown Windsor is range with a view. Plenty of restaurants can turn out a business breakfast or a seafood dinner; fewer can do both from one waterfront kitchen and let the table decide which one the evening becomes. The Detroit River supplies the backdrop the city keeps returning to; the menu supplies the reasons to stay past the first course. On a clear night the far bank lights up across the water, and a plate of calamari at the glass is about as downtown-Windsor as an evening gets.
