Eastwood's Grill and Lounge

8.8

First time here? Take the 30-second tour of how Restaurantica works!

Four basted smoky beef ribs and a mound of slaw are the cleanest first order at Eastwood's Grill and Lounge, and they double as the cleanest answer to what kind of place this is. The kitchen on Riverside Drive East has decided that the rib plate sits at the centre of the table — hearty, smoky, and specific enough to lead an order without a long explanation. Around that anchor, Eastwood's runs a wider grill-and-lounge menu built to be useful late: Tuesday through Sunday hours that run to midnight on weeknights, to one in the morning Thursday through Saturday, and that have shaped a dining room with one foot in dinner and one in lounge.

The menu carries its name across the board. The Dirty Bird Sandwich pulls crispy chicken out of a comfort-food register and into something more playful — honey mustard, fried Brie, lettuce, tomato, and a roasted red pepper aioli. The Eastwood Burger stacks sauteed cajun onions, sliced cheddar, peameal bacon, and BBQ sauce on a single patty. Dirty Dozen Wings come traditional or boneless and run through a dozen sauces and rubs, from creamy garlic and Asiago to salt and vinegar to spicy honey garlic. Honest Lager Fish & Chips gives the haddock a Windsor accent — Walkerville Honest Lager batter, fresh cut fries, and slaw. Poutine arrives loaded with cheddar curds and beef gravy, Eastwood Nachos with taco beef and jalapenos, and a Dorito Pizza turns up in the grilled-pizza set. Salads, pasta plates, stir fries, and a few seafood mains round the list out.

That spread reads as a working argument about how Eastwood's is meant to be used. The kitchen is broad enough to find a plate for the person who came in for ribs, the person who came in for wings, the person who came in for a sandwich, and the vegetarian working through a Portobello Mushroom Melt with grilled zucchini, melted Swiss, and hummus. The names hold a sense of humour — Dirty Bird, Dirty Dozen, Dorito Pizza — that fits a lounge where the upstairs run of pool tables and a live-music and trivia rotation matter as much as any single plate. Eastwood's wants dinner to turn into the evening, and the menu makes the case for ordering as a table rather than as a solo diner. The grilled-pizza set, the wings, the nachos, and the poutine are all built to travel between chairs at the same table.

The geography helps. Riverside Drive East puts Eastwood's a short walk from the Detroit River, and waterfront views show up in how regulars describe the place as often as the food does. Mondays are closed, but Tuesday through Sunday the kitchen covers both the lunch-time table that wants a Cluck Cluck Club at one in the afternoon and the late-evening table that wants Eastwood Nachos at half past eleven. The bar stays open as long as the kitchen does, which is what gives the lounge half its weight. Takeout and delivery sit on the side as their own channel — the Eastwood Burger and the Poutine carry the restaurant's character into a kitchen counter at home without losing much of it in transit.

Eastwood's has been working that format on Riverside Drive East since 2018, and the choice to lean into a playful, group-friendly comfort menu instead of a tighter specialist's list is what makes a return visit feel different from the last one. One night it is the beef ribs and a pint and an early seat. Another night it is the Dirty Dozen Wings, a pitcher, and a game upstairs. The kitchen is happy to be both, and the dining room is built to take either shift.

Three things this kitchen does the rest don’t

  1. 01

    Beef-Rib Calling Card

BBQ Beef Ribs give Eastwood's its most obvious menu anchor: smoky, hearty, and specific enough to lead the order without needing a long explanation.

  2. 02

    Playful Comfort-Food Range

Dirty Bird Sandwich, Dorito Pizza, Eastwood Burger, poutine, wings, and lager-battered fish and chips make the menu broader and more playful than a plain grill list.

  3. 03

    Casual Lounge Utility

Late hours, takeout, group-friendly snacks, and the upstairs pool-room signal make Eastwood's useful for nights that are more relaxed than formal.
