Pizza Dee's

8.9

First time here? Take the 30-second tour of how Restaurantica works!

Wasaga Beach doubles and empties with the seasons, and a pizzeria on the Mosley Street strip has to feed both versions of the town. Pizza Dee's does it with width. Pizza sits at the centre of the menu, and around it runs a broad comfort spread — pasta, chicken and veal mains, melts and garlic-forward starters — that gives a family, a group or a couple more than one way to order. It is Italian-Canadian cooking in the register a beach town actually uses: familiar, shareable, and built to feed a table that arrived hungry from the water.

The Chicken Cheese Melt is the plate that best explains the kitchen: open-face chicken breast on garlic bread under melted cheese, tomato and lettuce, finished with barbecue sauce and mayo and pushed out with a side of fries — a pizzeria's idea of a diner sandwich, built to eat as a full meal. The pasta runs from a house-made meat lasagna to Chicken Alfredo to a plate of spaghetti with sausage and peppers to the Spaghetti Supreme, oven-baked noodles under meatballs, meat sauce and melted cheese for anyone who wants more than a bowl. Pizza holds the middle — Meat Lovers, Hawaiian and a vegetarian among the standards, with panzerotti for the same flavours folded and sealed. The starters stay familiar and are meant to: bruschetta over oil, garlic and ripe tomato; garlic fingers; wings; a Caesar; and the Meatball Melt, more or less the sandwich the pizza oven was built to make.

The breadth is the whole design. A menu this wide is a decision about who walks through the door — a family where nobody agrees, a group splitting a delivery order, two people who want one pizza and one plate of pasta between them. A good share of it never sees a table at all: delivery to a rental, takeout eaten on the sand, a family order picked up on the way back from the water. Pizza Dee's hands each of them an easy answer, which is why the kitchen points first-timers at three plates, the Chicken Cheese Melt, the Spaghetti Supreme and the Chicken Cacciatore — a boneless breast in tomato sauce with peppers, mushrooms and onion over spaghetti, and the lightest thing on an otherwise cheese-forward list. The advice that follows is just as plain: send the garlic fingers to the middle of the table first, and let the rest of the order assemble around them.

The way it reaches a table is deliberately plain. Dine-in, takeout, delivery and a patio give four ways to fold the restaurant into a day spent mostly on the beach, with beer and wine on hand for anyone settling in, and later hours on Friday and Saturday nights when the strip is busiest. There is no standalone website; the takeout menu stays current through a local dining directory, reservations run through a phone line, and the calendar turns up the occasional community dinner rather than a marketing plan. The restaurant has cooked for the Mosley Street strip since 2000, and none of the machinery around the food has needed to change.

What Pizza Dee's trades on is not reinvention but reliability: a broad comfort menu a beach-town table can order against without much thought, whatever the weather or the size of the group. In July that means feeding a patio of visitors off the sand; in the quiet months it means the locals who keep a Mosley Street kitchen busy after the beach empties out. The pizza anchors it, the pasta and chicken widen it, and the melts give it a house signature the chains up the highway don't carry. Order across it and the logic shows: one kitchen, a wide menu, and a table that leaves without anyone having settled for a compromise.
