WARD 14

9.3

First time here? Take the 30-second tour of how Restaurantica works!

At WARD 14, the lamp hanging over your table and the chair you settled into may both be for sale. The Preston Street bar doubles as a vintage consignment shop, its eclectic furniture and odd treasures rotating in and out as pieces find buyers, so the look is never quite the same from one visit to the next. This is a cocktail bar you can browse, and the drinks more than hold up their end of the bargain.

The house list runs under the banner of a Cocktail Hall of Fame, playful without losing its footing. The Pineapple Mule is the clearest read on what the bartenders are after: top-shelf gin, mint, and a spicy pineapple ginger beer, bright rather than sticky. From there the range opens up. Takes Two To Mango builds chili-infused tequila and Cointreau into mango and a rim of Tajín; the Boulevardier Ananas swaps the usual Campari for a pineapple-infused version; the Empress of Elderflower pulls together Empress gin, St. Germain, lemon, and white cranberry. The Guadeloupean Mule leans on Kraken rum and ginger beer, the Retro Roto spikes vodka and Kahlúa with cold brew, and tongue-in-cheek names like Daddy Issues and Mommy's Little Secret signal a bar that refuses to take any of it too seriously.

What arrives alongside those cocktails tells you how seriously the kitchen takes itself, which is to say not very. The food is a short stack of steamie hot dogs and convenience-store nostalgia. The OG Steamie comes the classic way, with ketchup, mustard, relish, and kettle chips, while The WARD Steamie sharpens it with sauerkraut and pickled hot peppers, both available with a meat or veggie dog. The snacks lean further into the joke, running from popcorn and ripple chips with French onion dip to packaged Jos Louis and Ah Caramel cakes pulled straight out of a Québécois childhood. The popcorn and the chips and salsa come gluten-free, a small courtesy on a menu that is otherwise all about indulgence. Pairing a carefully built cocktail with a wrapped snack cake is the entire idea, not an oversight, and it sets the register for the evening.

The consignment concept has been the organizing principle since WARD 14 opened in 2016, and it has handed the bar a second life as a host. Over the years the place has become an eclectic home for pop-ups, its collected, changeable character making it a natural fit for one-off events and rotating residencies. Regulars clock what has changed since their last round, and the rotating stock quietly rewards coming back. The decor does double duty: atmosphere on a quiet night, inventory on a good one.

None of this demands a big night out. The bar keeps a non-alcoholic lane it calls the No Booze Cruise, with canned mocktails like the Mellow Mojito and Midday Mule alongside Collective Arts pale ale and stout, so a table can stay loose without anyone drinking. That flexibility, plus the browsable shelves and the low-stakes food, makes WARD 14 an easy casual date or a regulars' catch-up as readily as a proper night out in Little Italy.

The timing is late-week by design. The doors open Thursday through Saturday, six in the evening until two in the morning, which makes the bar a night-out proposition rather than a dinner reservation. Start with The Special, a local lager tall boy and a one-ounce shot of Jameson for nine dollars, and let the evening find its own shape from there: a mule, a steamie, maybe a lamp you hadn't planned on carrying out. Preston Street is not short on places to get a drink. Few of them let you take the furniture home.

Three things this kitchen does the rest don’t

  1. 01

    Vintage Consignment Bar Identity

The room is not just decorated with vintage pieces; the consignment setup is central to how WARD 14 feels, giving guests a reason to browse, linger and notice changes between visits.

  2. 02

Cocktail Hall of Fame and Steamies

The menu is narrow but legible: playful cocktails, two clear Steamie builds, simple snacks and a non-alcoholic lane. That focus suits a small late-night room better than a sprawling kitchen.

  3. 03

    Clear Value Move

The Special gives WARD 14 a simple, source-backed value hook: a local lager tall boy and Jameson shot for $9, sitting alongside $14-$15 cocktails and $8-$9 Steamies.
