Grey's Social Eatery

7.9

First time here? Take the 30-second tour of how Restaurantica works!

At Grey's Social Eatery, the room does more of the work than the kitchen — and that is the honest way to read the place. It occupies 2 ByWard Market Square, a high-visibility Ottawa corner that spent years as the Blue Cactus before Abbis Mahmoud and the Dreammind Group reopened it under the Grey's name. What sits there now is a large social eatery arranged so an evening can keep moving: a full bar, a patio on one of the Market's busiest corners, a private event space upstairs, and a menu broad enough that a mixed table rarely fails to find its plate. The draw is less any single dish than the way dinner, cocktails, groups, and timing all fit under one roof.

The menu is wide without being shapeless. Its most specific plate is the Flambe Sambuca Shrimp — Argentinian shrimp with sun-dried tomato, arugula, a sambuca cream sauce, and grilled baguette — a table-starter with more character than the usual board of fried appetizers. From there it branches in every direction. The Double Smash Burger stacks two patties with maple candy bacon, cheddar, and Grey's Sauce; Tuna Tataki arrives dressed in citrus ponzu, mango chili, and pickled ginger; Beef Wonton Tacos fold braised beef into wonton shells with rendang sauce and toasted candied coconut. Sushi-style rolls and maki share the page with a Steak au Poivre over potato dauphine, a Mushroom Ravioli in truffle cream and Calabrian chili oil, and a Linguine Pescatore of shrimp and mussels in arrabbiata. There are burgers for a plain appetite, a black bean patty and crispy halloumi for the vegetarians, fish tacos and calamari for the sharers. It is contemporary comfort food on a Canadian base, built to be split rather than made a pilgrimage of.

That breadth is the point, not a hedge. Grey's is arranged for a social night rather than a quiet destination meal, and the programming says so plainly. A daily happy hour runs from four to six, with a second late-night window; Wine Wednesdays cut bottle prices in half midweek; Friday and Saturday bring all-day ten-dollar triples for a table building a weekend round. Late-night DJs carry the back half of the weekend toward two in the morning, and the bar and kitchen are set up to hand a table off from dinner to drinks without a seam in the evening. By that late window, plenty of the crowd is there for the cocktails as much as the plates.

It is also built to be booked, not just wandered into. Grey's runs first-party reservations and leans on them, steering larger parties toward group bookings and an upstairs event space rather than treating every visit as a walk-in. That makes it a practical answer for a birthday, a work night, or any Market table too big to leave to chance. The patio matters here for the same reason the corner does: on a warm evening it turns a broad indoor eatery into the more obvious choice for drinks and dinner out in the open, a few steps from the busiest foot traffic in the Market.

The ownership is the throughline. Grey's is a project of Abbis Mahmoud and the Dreammind Group, an Ottawa hospitality operation whose reach, by local reporting, extends well beyond a single Market corner into private events and destination properties around the region. Reopening the former Blue Cactus corner fits the pattern: take a familiar, well-placed Ottawa address and rebuild its identity around programming and occasion instead of a signature chef. No current chef is named in the restaurant's public materials, and Grey's does not lean on one — the kitchen turns out a broad, dependable menu, and the operator's instinct for occasion and place carries the rest.

On a warm evening the read is simplest. The patio faces one of the ByWard Market's busiest corners, happy hour lands at four, and the menu hands a group its options — shrimp and cocktails to open, burgers and tacos to settle in, a bottle of wine if it happens to be a Wednesday. The corner has traded names before, and the food here is familiar rather than daring. What Grey's is betting on is the night itself: reserve ahead, bring people, and let the evening decide how long it runs.

Three things this kitchen does the rest don’t

  1. 01

    ByWard Market Social Room

Grey's strongest identity is the room: a large Market address with patio, bar, private-event use, and weekend late-night cues. The food matters, but the reason to choose it is the way dinner, drinks, groups, and timing all sit under one roof.

  2. 02

    Broad Menu With Real Anchors

The menu is wide without being shapeless. Flambe Sambuca Shrimp, Double Smash Burger, Tuna Tataki, Beef Wonton Tacos, Mushroom Ravioli, and Steak au Poivre give the kitchen enough concrete order paths for different kinds of tables.

  3. 03

    Recurring Value Programs

Daily happy hour, Wine Wednesdays, and weekend drink offers give Grey's more visit strategy than a standard dinner listing. Those programs are current and recurring, which makes them useful for planning rather than just background promotion.
