The Wooly Pub

8.9

First time here? Take the 30-second tour of how Restaurantica works!

The Wooly Pub has been downtown Guelph's meeting place for thirty-five years, run out of an old brick house at 176 Woolwich Street with a front porch, a bar, a couple of dining rooms and a back patio. It is a pub in the fullest sense — a room built for repeat visits rather than a one-time stop, and one Guelph has folded into its weekly habits over more than three decades. What keeps it from being just another neighbourhood bar is how seriously it takes both the beer board and the supplier list behind the kitchen.

The beer is the headline. The Wooly pours twenty-one taps that lean hard into Ontario craft — Wellington, Bellwoods, Elora Brewing, Great Lakes, Cowbell, Godspeed and more in rotation — alongside a cask Arkell Best Bitter, a real-ale touch most Ontario pubs have long since dropped. Two of the lines are its own: Harvest Lager and Harvest Ale, brewed by Wellington Brewery exclusively for the group behind the pub. The board changes often enough that the first move on any visit is to read it rather than default to the safe pour.

The food reads like standard pub comfort until you notice where it comes from. The nachos and the jalapeño corn dip are both built on tortilla chips from Barrie's Asparagus Farm; the Beef Dip and the Smokey BBQ Burger run on YU Ranch beef; the fish-and-chips and the pan-seared pickerel both use Great Lakes pickerel, the latter plated with seasoned rice, sweet peas and a sundried tomato pesto. The Spice Bag — breaded chicken thigh or tofu with fries, five-spice, curry sauce and hot honey — is the sharper order, and the menu stretches into Butter Chicken Curry, Banh Mi Tacos built on pickerel, blackened chicken or tofu, a steak-and-mushroom pie and a sticky toffee cake without losing the pub footing. All the chicken is hand-cut and Halal.

The pub runs on a weekly rhythm that rewards regulars. Happy hour brings six-dollar select pints Monday through Thursday from three to five and again from nine to close, with a Sunday evening window too. Monday is half-price wings, Tuesday is the tater-tot nachos the kitchen calls Tot-cho, Wednesday drops wine bottles to half price, and Thursday turns over to a barbecue feature of chicken and ribs. It is the kind of cadence that makes the Wooly a weeknight habit rather than a special-occasion booking, and the porch and patio give a mixed group somewhere to settle in once the order is down.

Underneath all of it is a clear set of values. Founder Bob Desautels built the Wooly out of the late-1980s Ontario microbrewery movement, with the idea of a community room that championed small local breweries, and the pub has carried that forward into B Corp certification, carbon-neutral work, community fundraising and a supplier list — YU Ranch, Vision Greens, With The Grain Bakery, 3Gen Organics and more — that it publishes openly. Thirty-five years in, the Wooly is the rare pub whose civic role isn't a marketing line but the actual reason the room still fills.

Unique Selling Points

Three things this kitchen does the rest don’t

  1. 01

Ontario Craft Beer Pub With History

The Wooly is not just a room that happens to sell beer. Its identity is tied to Ontario craft brewing, cask culture, Wellington Harvest beers, rotating regional taps, and a downtown Guelph pub history that reaches back to 1990.

  2. 02

    Comfort Food With Supplier Backbone

Nachos, pickerel, burgers, Beef Dip, wings, Spice Bag, and daily features feel familiar, but the supplier list gives the food more character than a generic pub menu. The best orders use that backbone rather than treating the place as only a pint stop.

  3. 03

    Weekly Specials And Community Routine

The pub has a real cadence: happy hour, half-price wings, wine night, barbecue features, porch and patio energy, and a long-standing role as a Guelph meeting place. That makes it useful for repeat visits, not just one planned night out.
