The first thing a table settles at R U Serious is not what to eat but how hot to take it. Wings come with a sauce board wide enough to turn a single order into a negotiation: Forty Creek Whiskey BBQ at the smoky end, Caribbean Jerk and Cajun Honey through the middle, Sweet Chili for anyone ducking the heat, a Buffalo-style Frank's for the purists, and dry-spice rubs for the table that wants seasoning without the mess. At this west-end Guelph sports pub, wings are the natural first order, and the board is broad enough that two visits rarely taste the same.
From there the menu keeps putting its own name on the plate. The R U Burger is the house build, a ten-ounce patty under chipotle mayo, cheese, and onion rings, and it anchors a burger section deep enough to carry a Canadian with cheddar and bacon, a Rickard's in mesquite barbecue sauce, and a Buffalo finished with Frank's and blue cheese. The RU Battered Chicken Sammy stacks a beer-battered breast with cheddar, bacon, onion strings, and jalapeno ranch. Fish and Chips comes in a homemade Fat Tire ale batter with fresh-cut fries and coleslaw, the kind of from-scratch detail a busier kitchen would happily buy in frozen.
The shareable end of the menu is where the kitchen has the most fun. Poutine starts with fresh-cut fries and Canadian curds; pierogies arrive under sauteed onions, bacon, and cheese; RU Nachos pile on peppers, onions, and a choice of taco beef or grilled chicken. Stranger, better ideas sit alongside them: battered cauliflower tossed in any wing sauce, deep-fried pickle spears with a homemade dill dip, onion rings served with tzatziki salsa, and housemade antojitos — Tex-Mex cream-cheese tortillas baked to order. It is more invention than a regulars' pub is obligated to attempt, and it gives a group plenty to split before the mains arrive.
What holds the menu together is a habit of doing the small things by hand. The fries are cut fresh, the fish batter is mixed in house, the garlic bread is built on loaves from the local Buns Master Bakery, and the wing sauces are treated as the part worth getting right. None of this is reinvention — it is pub food, squarely — but the specifics are what separate the kitchen from a freezer-to-fryer operation. The range works the same plain way: between starters, salads, burgers, wraps, and mains, a mixed table rarely struggles to find its plate, which is most of what a neighbourhood pub is asked to do.
The pub goes back to 1992, when, by the family's account, Ted and Sandy Wynhofen took on a west-end Guelph restaurant opportunity and grew it into a steady neighbourhood fixture. Kim and Leslie run it now, and the second-generation hand shows in how the place reads as a warm regulars' room rather than a concept with a deck behind it. The name is a groaner, the sort a family business keeps precisely because regulars already say it back across the bar.
The hours follow the same practical logic, running past midnight from Thursday through Saturday for the west-end crowd that wants somewhere to land after a game. The sports-bar side of the house is what those late nights are for — taps poured for the bar, screens tuned to whatever is in season, the kind of casual gathering a punning sign was always built to host. And because the whole menu travels — wings, burgers, and fish and chips all sturdy enough to survive the drive, with a call ahead the only real ask — R U Serious works as easily from a kitchen table as from a bar stool.
