Dave's Pub & Grill is where an Oakwood Resort day lands when it's done — the foursome coming off the course, the family in from the Grand Bend beach, the couple out for a weekend stay, all funnelled to the same tavern above the first green of the resort's nine-hole course. The kitchen cooks for exactly that crowd: comfort food, broad and unfussy, nothing that asks a table to study it. The clearest read is the plate that carries the house name — Dave's Famous Fish & Chips, beer-battered haddock with fries, coleslaw, and tartar sauce, the order a first-timer reaches for to take the measure of everything else.

The group order more or less writes itself. Wings come as a two-pound platter, breaded and fried, with a sauce list that runs from honey garlic and lemon pepper through maple chili to Nashville hot. Fully Loaded Nachos arrive piled with sweet corn, jalapenos, blended cheese, sour cream, and a local Bushy's salsa, built for the middle of the table. Around them sit the rest of the shareables — garlic bread, spinach dip, sizzling shrimp, deep-fried mushrooms, and fries that take a poutine upgrade — the kind of first round that keeps a mixed table grazing before anyone commits to a plate of their own.

Past the shareables, the kitchen keeps a wider hand than a golf-course pub needs to. The fish and chips has company: grilled salmon in lemon butter over saffron rice, pan-seared pickerel, beer-battered fish tacos. Crispy Chicken Tenders and the Oakwood Burger hold down the familiar centre, a Philly cheesesteak and a chicken Caesar wrap cover the handhelds, and a Greek salad, a garden veggie burger, and Garden Rigatoni give the non-fried diners a route through the meal. Dessert lands without ceremony — a Warm Brownie Sundae for the table, tiramisu or an apple crumble if the group is still counting. The range is deliberate: feed golfers, beach traffic, and overnight guests in a single evening, and one specialty won't carry the night.

The bar reads the same way. A rotating set of local beers turns over on tap alongside cocktails and a house lager brewed to carry the pub's own name, so the drink list keeps pace with the food's breadth instead of narrowing it. Saturdays bring live music, a standing part of the pub's calendar rather than an occasional booking, though the dates turn over and are worth a same-week check. The pleasures on offer are the plain ones — a bite after a round, a sunset dinner, late laughs with friends. It all points one direction: a bar and a kitchen set up for whoever walks in off the course, the sand, or the highway.

The name carries real history. Dave's has poured since 1922, but the resort around it took its modern shape in 1981, when the family that still runs Oakwood bought a small sixteen-room inn — a handful of cottages, a longhouse, a pub, and a dining room — and spent the decades since building it into a golf-and-conference property. The pub itself is named for the man who built that business. Fire took the original pine-log tavern in 2005; what stands now is a larger clubhouse of oak beams and stone hearth, looking over the first green and still family-run into a second and third generation.

For a first visit the read is simple: order the fish and chips, open with a round of wings and nachos, and let the setting carry the rest. Reservations run through a request form rather than an instant booking, so a fixed time or a large group is worth a direct call to the resort. And in summer, the patio above the first green is the seat to ask for — best claimed late enough to catch a Grand Bend sunset over the fairway.
