Little Mushroom Dining Lounge

9.6

First time here? Take the 30-second tour of how Restaurantica works!

Order the Pulled Pork Bao Buns and the Sesame Gochujang Duck Wings on a Friday night, and Little Mushroom Dining Lounge reads as a tapas kitchen built for sharing. Arrive on a Sunday and the same dining room is pouring tea and plating Eggs Benedict; on a weekday it is a lunch counter with table service. This small Cambridge restaurant, tucked into the Pinebush area on the north side of the city, runs four distinct programs out of one address — weekday lunch, Sunday brunch, afternoon tea, and a Thursday-and-Friday tapas service — and the first useful decision a diner makes is which of them to show up for.

The menu rewards that decision with range. The tapas list runs to assertive small plates meant to be ordered in rounds — Bison Sliders, Cheddar-Stuffed Meatballs, Potato and Spinach Bites, and a Big Mushroom Soup that nods to the restaurant's own name — with a Trio Dip and pita for the table that wants something to share first. Afternoon tea brings House-Baked Scones and High Tea Sandwiches; Sunday brunch leans on the Eggs Benedict; and a Roast Duck Breast anchors the more composed end of the kitchen's work. A Turkey Jalapeño Burger and a Vegan Brownie round out a list that keeps something for the table after comfort and the one after a small surprise.

What ties the week together is a kitchen used to changing register on demand. The lounge carries Feast On certification — the mark of an Ontario program for restaurants that commit to local farms and producers — which gives its seasonal, locally focused leaning a concrete footing rather than a slogan. Service stays full and seated across every format, and the dining room stays small: the kind of place where a reservation for afternoon tea and a reservation for a tapas evening are booked into the same handful of tables, and where the feel is closer to a supper among friends than a restaurant chasing turnover. The range is wide; the footprint is deliberately not.

Those shifts in format also sort the kinds of visits the lounge does well. Thursday and Friday tapas, ordered in rounds, is the evening built for two people working through shared plates and a glass of wine; afternoon tea, booked ahead, turns a birthday or a catch-up into a planned occasion; Sunday brunch handles the wider table. Because seating is limited and full-service throughout, none of these are walk-up-and-graze visits — they reward a diner who has decided what the afternoon or evening is for and reserved accordingly.

The dining room grew out of Little Mushroom Catering, a longer-running Cambridge catering company, and opened its own doors in 2020 as the public-facing counterpart to that business. The catering lineage explains the ease with formats: a company built on cooking for events already knows how to turn one kitchen toward a Sunday brunch service one week and a plated dinner the next. It also explains the reach into afternoon tea and locally sourced plates, both closer to an events kitchen's habits than to a standard dinner-only restaurant. Booking is handled online, and because the menu shifts by the day, reserving the specific service — brunch, tea, or tapas — matters more here than simply reserving a table.

None of this announces itself from Sheldon Drive, an unshowy commercial stretch where a catering company is a more expected tenant than a tea service. The modest name fits the address and undersells the kitchen behind it — the same tables that hold a tiered afternoon tea will, two days on, carry a Friday round of bao buns and gochujang duck wings. Little Mushroom keeps its ambitions off the sign and puts them on the calendar instead; the diner's part is to read it and book accordingly.
