Flakery Bakery

9.1

First time here? Take the 30-second tour of how Restaurantica works!

Flakery Bakery sits in a town of a couple thousand people, and its signature dessert has a reach that outruns the address. The Butter Tart Cupcake bakes a mini butter tart inside a cupcake and finishes it with caramel buttercream and a caramel drizzle — two Canadian sweets folded into one, legible before the first bite. It is the item that explains the place fastest. Mary Beth Wigle runs the shop from a single storefront in Point Edward's main district, where the display case rotates through cupcakes, cookies and cakes and rarely looks the same twice.

The case reaches well past its signature. Classic Butter Tarts anchor the traditional side, with a pecan version alongside them, and the shelves fill out with French macarons, Portuguese custard tarts, Nanaimo bars, tangy lemon bars, old-fashioned date squares and strawberry rhubarb bars — the squares and bars are the crowd favourite regulars reach for first. Mini cheesecakes bring a richer, more composed option to a lineup otherwise built on cookies and cupcakes, and a Cookie Cake scales the ordinary cookie into a shareable centrepiece for a smaller celebration. Custom birthday cakes handle the planned occasion. An Egg and Ham Breakfast Bun holds down the one savoury corner of a case that is otherwise given over to sugar.

None of it stays fixed. Flavours and seasonal creations rotate through the case on their own rhythm, and the most sought-after items arrive as limited runs that Wigle announces on social media and that sell out quickly once word gets around. Holidays and the turn of the seasons bring their own themed batches, so even the reasons to stop in shift with the calendar. There is no website; Facebook and Instagram are where the next drop shows up, which makes a visit partly a matter of timing. One of those limited releases, the Butter Tart Cupcake among them, drew notice from local reporting when it caught attention well beyond the shop's regular counter. The case rewards the customer who checks the feed and arrives early more than the one who expects the same tray every week.

The format keeps the bar low for how much you have to commit. A single cookie, cupcake or mini cheesecake makes an easy solo stop, while a mixed box can cover several textures at a mid-range price without adding up to a full cake. Service is the other draw people mention — an unhurried counter where the staff are known for being welcoming, the kind of small-town exchange that brings people back. For families it is straightforward: the cupcakes and cookies need no explaining, and a birthday moves from the case to a custom cake with a call ahead.

Wigle came to ownership after roughly twenty-five years in the food industry and culinary management, and Flakery is the business she built on that experience. The storefront had been a bakery before her; she took over the former Cassie's Cottage Bakery at the Louisa Street address and rebranded it as Flakery in 2023, continuing a bakery that has operated on the site since 2016. She has kept the operation to a single location by choice, staying close enough to the counter to know many of her regulars by name.

A visit runs on the bakery's own terms. It is counter service and takeout — you choose from the case, arrange a custom order by phone or in person, and carry the box home rather than settle in, and the buttercream that makes the cupcakes travels only as far as a local drive, never a shipping label. The signature is the constant; the case around it is built to keep changing, which is what turns a treat run into a standing habit.
