Start With the Breakfast Quesadilla
Choose the Breakfast Quesadilla when breakfast needs to carry through the morning. Egg, ham, vegetables and cheese make it more substantial than the simpler sandwich options while keeping the order compact.

The kitchen came before the café. Canadian Mental Health Association Grey Bruce was already running a catering operation and a garden program in Owen Sound — food work built to create supportive employment and teach kitchen skills — when it decided that work deserved a storefront. Fresh Roots Café opened in 2022 on Second Avenue East, in the middle of the downtown core, and the arrangement behind it is worth stating plainly: the breakfast and lunch sold over the counter pay for the employment happening behind it. That collapses the usual distance between a good cause and a good meal. The question a diner brings through the door — is the food worth the trip — turns out to be the same question the mission is asking.
The menu answers it. Breakfast runs all day. The Breakie Quesadilla folds egg, ham, onion, peppers and cheese into a tortilla, and it is the order that carries a morning furthest; a peameal bacon and egg sandwich is the shorter version, and cinnamon French toast with bacon is the version where somebody has decided to enjoy themselves. Lunch leans deli. Montreal smoked meat on rye is the café's most recognizable sandwich, and the Reuben builds the same meat out with sauerkraut and Swiss. The Cubano Crunch layers pork roast, ham, Swiss, pickles, crispy onion and honey Dijon. A crispy chicken Caesar can be taken as a wrap or as a bowl, a loaded grilled cheese covers the plainer appetite, and the soup rotation moves through mulligatawny and ham and pea. Zucchini loaf and butter tarts hold down the baking counter. Frozen meals leave with the people who want the cooking without the sitting.
None of this is ambitious cooking, and it is not trying to be. It is the food a working town eats on a Tuesday, made from scratch and priced so that eating it on a Tuesday stays possible. The constraint underneath is what gives the menu its shape. A kitchen staffed partly to train people needs dishes that teach — sandwiches assembled to a spec, soups that reward attention, baking that has to come out the same way every time — and the current board reads exactly that way: broad enough that a regular has somewhere to go, tight enough that every item on it can be executed properly by a crew still learning the trade. The narrowness is a choice, not a shortfall.
The catering arm came first, in 2017, five years ahead of the café, and it still runs. The same kitchen turns out trays for meetings and events, and the storefront simply gave that work a public face and a set of regular hours. Chef Trevor Schwandt heads the kitchen; Terri Maue manages the café. The garden that fed the earliest version of the program explains the name better than any sign out front does: this started as growing, became cooking, became employment, and the counter was the last piece to arrive.
The hours say who the café is for. Doors open at half past seven and the kitchen stops at two, Monday through Friday — the shape of an operation built around the working day downtown rather than around dinner. Dine-in and takeout both come off the same line, there is no online booking, and a phone call handles anything that needs arranging. Near the till hangs the Pay It Forward board, a set of tags a customer can buy ahead so that someone else can come in later, take one down, and eat without explaining anything to anyone. It is the smallest mechanism in the building and the plainest version of what the whole place is doing. Somebody has breakfast on a Thursday because somebody else had breakfast on a Tuesday and paid for two.
A CMHA Grey Bruce social enterprise, supportive employment and the Pay It Forward board connect the café's daily service to a clear community purpose.
From the Breakfast Quesadilla to French toast, pancakes and egg sandwiches, the all-day breakfast section offers several complete morning routes.
The Reuben Sandwich, BLT Sandwich, soups, wraps and bowls keep lunch familiar while giving regulars enough variety for repeat weekday visits.
