Timmy's Diner

9.0

First time here? Take the 30-second tour of how Restaurantica works!

Timmy's Diner runs on one clear rule: breakfast is available every hour the kitchen is open, and the kitchen is only open in daylight. The door unlocks at six in the morning and locks again at three in the afternoon, six days a week, with no dinner service and no attempt at one. What fills those hours is a daytime diner on West Street South in downtown Orillia, a few steps off the Highway 12 corridor, running the arc a working town keeps time by — a full plate before a shift, a sandwich at noon, a burger for whoever turned up hungry. The all-day breakfast is the spine, and everything else hangs off it.

The menu opens where the identity does. Timmy's Diner Special sets the benchmark: three eggs with a choice of breakfast meat, home fries, toast, and seasonal fruit — a complete plate that asks nothing of a first-timer. It shares the morning with a light breakfast and a big breakfast, a meat lovers' plate and a no-meat version, eggs Benedict, egg Florentine, and a three-egg cheese omelette with Western, Greek, and vegetarian variations beside it. Pancakes cover the youngest tables. Lunch runs off the same counter without a change of clock: the Banquet Burger in quarter-pound and half-pound builds, a P.E.L.T. of egg, lettuce, tomato, and cured pork on toasted bread, a turkey club, a grilled cheese, and a large Western sandwich. Deep-fried pickles, butterfly shrimp, calamari, and poutine hold down the fried sides, and the coffee keeps coming.

The breadth is the point. A diner that runs breakfast and lunch off a single menu is built for the table that can't agree — the person who wants eggs at noon sitting across from the one who wants a burger, both of them ordering inside the same comfort-food range. Prices stay low, kids' meals get their own section, and nothing on the list asks a diner to turn a weekday meal into an occasion. The P.E.L.T. is the clearest expression of that logic: a sandwich that reaches back toward breakfast and forward into lunch in one order, which is exactly the kind of split the kitchen is built to settle.

None of it is set up as a destination. There is no reservation to make — the diner takes walk-ins and works the phone — and takeout and delivery are the routes out for anyone who can't come in. Coffee refills arrive without a count. It is the sort of arrangement that suits a daytime diner more than a night out: a place to fold into a morning or a lunch break rather than to plan an evening around, with the same breakfast plates and burgers traveling to a table at home about as well as they land at the counter.

The name over the door belongs to Kandiah Tharmarajah, who goes by Timmy. By local accounts, he bought the West Street South business in the spring of 2023 — it had been Hermie's Diner before him — after sixteen years running Timmy's Bagels and Coffee in Scarborough. Born in Sri Lanka and decades settled in Canada, he moved north to Orillia and chose this address for its Highway 12 access and its parking, the unglamorous arithmetic of a diner that wants to be easy to reach. He runs it with his wife, Gowsy, as a family business, and he has been plain about putting better-quality meat on the plate than the price band would lead a diner to expect.

That intention carries into how the diner frames itself — a local place where customer satisfaction is the stated strength and the room is meant to feel like home. It is a modest thing to promise and not a simple one to keep: a family that bought someone else's diner and hung its own name out front is wagering that a full plate, a fair price, and a bottomless cup of coffee still bring people back through the door. Six mornings a week, from first light to mid-afternoon, Timmy's is trying to be the kind of ordinary a neighbourhood decides to keep.
