Gangnam Korea

First time here? Take the 30-second tour of how Restaurantica works!

For years, a proper Korean meal in Muskoka meant a drive out of the district. Sunju Lee, a long-time Port Sydney resident, set out to close that gap, and she kept it in the family to do it — her cousin, Chef Yangmo Kim, left Toronto to run the kitchen. The two opened Gangnam Korea on Main Street in downtown Huntsville in 2021, borrowing the name of Seoul's Gangnam district and building the menu around the dish Lee wanted closest to home: Korean fried chicken, which Kim prepares himself.

That chicken is the calling card, and it arrives in more than one register — a golden crispy version, a honey-butter coat, a soy-garlic gloss, and a sweet-spicy glaze that runs hotter on request — in portions that scale from a single order to a format built to feed a whole table. Around it sits a broader Korean menu than the fried-chicken billing lets on. Japchae pulls sweet-potato noodles through marinated beef and vegetables, springy and savoury-sweet, the most useful counterweight to a plate of chicken; bulgogi carries that same marinade over steamed rice for anyone who wants Korean comfort without starting at the fryer; dupbap rice bowls turn bulgogi, chicken, or spicy pork into one self-contained plate. Deep-fried dumplings, kimchi, a pork-bone and potato soup, chicken and pork katsu, Gangnam fried rice, and tteokbokki fill in the corners, while the street-food side runs to mozza-dogs and bubble tea. Portions are priced to match the table — a compact bowl for one, a family-sized tray of chicken for a group — so the bill tracks the number of diners rather than the number of plates.

The breadth is the point. A first visit almost always ends up being the fried chicken; a second might be a japchae-and-bulgogi pairing that reads the kitchen without leaning on the fryer at all; a hungry weeknight can collapse into a single dupbap bowl and nothing more. For a group, the smarter approach is to spread the order — chicken, dumplings, noodles, and a round of bubble tea — so the table covers crisp, chewy, savoury, and sweet in one sitting rather than stacking similar mains. Gangnam Korea leans into the reference its name makes, with Korean pop on the speakers and décor that nods toward Seoul, and regulars tend to describe the atmosphere as lively and the service as unusually warm. But the food does the heavier lifting, and a menu this wide is really an invitation to come back through a different door each time.

The family thread is not set dressing. Lee spent years in Port Sydney dreaming of a Korean restaurant in Huntsville before she opened one, and Kim moved his cooking several hours north specifically to be the one behind it; the menu still credits him by name for the chicken. Huntsville is the flagship, and the two have since opened a second location in North Bay. That a cousin would relocate to fry chicken for a relative's restaurant is the kind of origin a concept restaurant manufactures and this one simply had.

In a four-season resort town, where summer visitors want variety and off-season regulars want something reliable, Gangnam Korea answers both with the same kitchen and a moderate bill. The restaurant's own page is built around scheduled pickup, so the practised move is to order ahead, name a collection time, and carry the chicken home while the crust is still loud; delivery covers the nights nobody wants to drive, and the dining room is there when a meal is worth sitting down for. Most people come the first time for the fried chicken. The rest of the menu is why, in this stretch of Muskoka, the drive out of the district stopped being the only way to eat this well.

Three things this kitchen does the rest don’t

  1. 01

A Family Story With a Working Kitchen Centre

Sunju Lee's goal of sharing Korean food in Huntsville is joined to Chef Yangmo Kim's current role, giving the restaurant a clear people-led identity rather than a generic concept story.

  2. 02

Fried Chicken With a Broader Korean Menu

Signature glazed chicken leads the order, but dupbap, japchae, bulgogi, gamjatang, dumplings and kimchi give returning diners several different routes through the kitchen.

  3. 03

Flexible Formats for One or Many

Individual rice bowls, pickup ordering and larger sharing formats let the same menu work for a solo meal, a family order or a table built around several contrasting dishes.
