Southbrook Golf Club

First time here? Take the 30-second tour of how Restaurantica works!

Southbrook turns up on a Binbrook calendar more often than a golf club usually does — a tournament dinner one weekend, a wedding the next, a fundraiser leaning on its dessert table, a Saturday table for people who have just walked off the eighteenth. The course came first. A group of partners bought a hundred and four acres from a local farmer in 1965 and cut a nine-hole layout along the Welland River, later stretching it to eighteen. A 2000 rebuild reoriented the clubhouse around the course views and gave the kitchen a proper dining room, now branded Nineteen — a place to eat in its own right, not just somewhere to settle the scorecard.

Two plates carry the menu's reputation. The Almost Famous Chicken Wings run through a long flavour list — mild to hot, honey garlic, honey hot, lemon pepper, cajun — and the Signature Fish 'N Chips is built on Rita's house-made battered haddock, a named-house batter that gives the plate a pedigree most clubhouse fish never gets. From there the kitchen reaches well past pub basics: an eight-ounce Angus striploin under Madagascar peppercorn jus, a Wagyu rigatoni Bolognese, a mushroom truffle fettuccini in white wine cream, a Cajun honey butter salmon over basmati, and a Chef-Inspired Pasta priced at market that changes on the kitchen's terms. The shareables hold the same intent: a baked brie skillet with roasted garlic, figs, and honey; a brown butter mac and cheese finished with toasted panko; crispy ravioli with fried parmesan.

The menu reads like a kitchen allowed to take itself seriously. The wings and the fish and chips still anchor the order, but the Nardini sausage on a bun points to local sourcing — Nardini is a Hamilton name — and the Clubhouse Caesar arrives with double-smoked bacon and focaccia croutons under a house-made lemon garlic dressing, not the bagged-crouton default. The pasta dishes are where the cooking stops pretending to be snack-bar food. Head chef Taylor Martin runs the line, with Matthew Bidwell as food and beverage director.

The setting does real work. The rebuilt clubhouse and its patio look straight out over the course, and the dining room takes reservations through the season for tables that have nothing to do with a tee time. The breadth of the menu is built for a mixed crowd: an Old House Salad with toasted almonds, cranberries, and white balsamic at the lighter end, a flat pan of nachos or a feta bruschetta flatbread to share, and a dessert list that runs to a chocolate chip cookie skillet, a salted caramel cheesecake, and a trio of maple butter tarts. It is a menu wide enough that a foursome, a family, and a wedding party can all find their plate at the same table.

The community footprint is the other half of the identity. Southbrook reports more than a hundred tournaments a year, and the club's name turns up behind the Binbrook Fair, the Binbrook Santa Claus Parade, the Hess Winter Village, and the area's Canada Day fireworks. The dessert menu carries that connection onto the plate: a dollar from every dessert goes to local community organizations. Owners Ian Ladd, Lisa Mercanti-Ladd, and Wray Barrett describe a club still being improved rather than finished.

Those two things — a kitchen that reaches past its category and a clubhouse that carries a town's calendar — are what make Southbrook more than the golf-course dining its address would predict. The course still follows the Welland River where the original nine holes were cut, and Nineteen books tables for people who never pick up a club. The round is only one of the reasons to drive out to Binbrook.
