Gordon Sushi House

First time here? Take the 30-second tour of how Restaurantica works!

The order that explains Gordon Sushi House is the one you carry back out the door. A Salmon Delight Set and a tray of rolls, picked up on Gordon Street and eaten somewhere else — that is the shape most visits take at this south-end Guelph sushi shop, a short drive from the University of Guelph. The menu is built for the trip home: sets, bento boxes, and party trays designed to travel as well as they plate.

The Salmon Delight Set is the restaurant in a single box — salmon sashimi, Salmon Roses, and a Golden Dragon Roll, enough raw-fish clarity and roll texture to stand in for the whole menu. Past it, the kitchen ranges wide. Sushi pizza arrives as crisped rice shaped like a pie under salmon, white tuna, crab, or BBQ eel, finished with eel sauce and spicy mayo. The Gordon Sushi Roll, the house's namesake, layers shrimp tempura, yam tempura, mango, and fish egg under a mango sauce. Bento Box B is the complete-meal route — shrimp and vegetable tempura, a beef dumpling, a California Roll, beef teriyaki, rice, miso soup, and a green salad on one tray. For a cleaner order, assorted sashimi and a spicy white tuna roll keep the focus on the fish, while a deep-fried California roll answers the table that wants something hot alongside the cold.

The cooked side keeps this from being a sushi-only stop. There are udon bowls — beef and chicken in broth — chicken katsu don over rice, and an appetizer run of karaage, gyoza, and tempura that reads like a small Japanese kitchen rather than a roll counter. Vegetarians get their own lane: yam tempura rolls, avocado and mango rolls, a veggie combo, and a mango-and-cheese roll that leans sweet. It is a wide board for a takeout shop, and the width is deliberate — one order can carry someone who wants sashimi and someone who would never touch raw fish.

What the menu makes clear is that Gordon Sushi House is organized around how people actually order sushi in a hurry. The sets, the roll-choice deals, the bento boxes, and the party trays are not add-ons to a dine-in experience; they are the experience, formats that let a student feed one, a family feed four, and a group feed a dozen without anyone negotiating over a single shared plate. Party Tray B alone runs spicy crab, spicy white tuna, California, Dynamite, Salmon and Avocado, Cucumber and Avocado, and a Golden Dragon Roll — a roll-focused spread meant to land in the middle of a crowd. Online pickup and delivery are the front door here, not an afterthought bolted onto a dining room. Value and convenience are not the compromise. They are the design.

The restaurant opened in 2019 with that logic already in place. Local reporting at the time named Pam Chen as the owner — she had previously run Samura Japanese Restaurant — and described the new Gordon Street arrival as a fresh-sushi alternative to the fast food crowding the campus edge, with Sam Ma in the kitchen. The location was chosen for its proximity to University of Guelph traffic, and the business leaned on takeout from the first day. Family-owned and built for pickup, it opened pointed squarely at the campus down the road and the takeout dinners that came with it.

Most of what Gordon Sushi House does well happens after the order leaves the counter. The trays go to a party; the bento goes to a desk; the Gordon Sushi Roll goes wherever the night is. The south-end stretch of Guelph it feeds — students a few minutes from campus, families a little further out — was already eating sushi at home, and the restaurant built its menu around that fact instead of around a dining room. On Gordon Street, the best version of dinner here is the one that ends in someone else's kitchen.
