Veslo Grand Bend Restaurant and Motel

First time here? Take the 30-second tour of how Restaurantica works!

A roadside motel on Highway 21 is not the obvious place to find seven styles of schnitzel and a bottle of Serbian plum brandy behind the bar. Veslo is exactly that place. This family-run Serbian and Balkan restaurant sits a few minutes north of Pinery Provincial Park, about twelve kilometres from the beach at Grand Bend, and it runs a kitchen with a clear centre of gravity: schnitzel, hand-breaded and sent out seven ways. Vienna comes fried plain; Gypsy under pan-fried tomatoes, peppers, and onions; Hunter in a homemade mushroom-and-onion gravy; Karadjordjeva rolled around homemade cheese; and Joe's, the house signature, finished with a thick layer of melted mozzarella. It is a dinner stop built to be planned around — a place a table drives to, orders wide across, and stays put for the evening.

The kitchen keeps that centre of gravity in the schnitzel lineup, then pushes past it into the rest of the Balkan menu. Chevapi Sausages arrive ten to an order — skinless grilled pork and beef tucked into homemade lepina bread with cheese and onions — and the smoked sausages come hand-sliced and flame-grilled. Shopska salad, built from tomato, cucumber, onion, green pepper, and grated feta under a house vegetable dressing, cuts the heavier plates with something bright; Greek and Caesar salads sit alongside it. There are house soups, a gulas and a chicken, and lepina baked in-house to go with them. The drinks list runs the same direction: beer and wine next to Sljivovica, the Serbian plum brandy, and Veslo-label wines bottled by Pillitteri Estates in Niagara.

The breadth is built for a table that can't agree. Split the Gypsy, the Hunter, and the Karadjordjeva and each person gets a different read on the same format — a tomato-and-pepper version, a mushroom-gravy version, a cheese-stuffed version. It reaches past the specialties, too. Chicken Tenders with plum sauce cover a younger eater, hand-breaded tilapia handles someone off pork, and the salads, soups, and lepina give the non-meat side of the table somewhere to go. It is a menu built so a mixed group can order in different directions and still sit down to one meal.

What the menu withholds says as much as what it offers. Veslo serves dinner three nights a week — Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, from four to nine — and stays dark Monday through Thursday. There is no online reservation link; the phone number on the contact page is the way in. The restaurant shares its property with a motel and an event setting, which frames the evening as rural hospitality rather than quick turnover, with lodging a few steps from the table and the capacity to seat a group that has come together. Plan the Highway 21 drive around the weekend window, and call ahead when the timing matters.

The family behind it is the Culums. Bob and Vesna Culum built the business, and their sons, Aleks and Miki, have taken over its ownership and management — a straight generational hand-off the family lays out in its own account. The restaurant has carried the Veslo name on this stretch of shoreline road since 2015. That lineage is the quiet engine under the family hospitality the kitchen runs on: guests treated like family is a line every restaurant claims, but it lands differently coming from the second generation of the one that opened the doors.

Veslo sits at a useful point on the map. Highway 21 threads it between Pinery, Port Franks, and the beach at Grand Bend, close enough that a park day or a stretch of shoreline can end at a schnitzel plate. That is the role it has grown into — the dinner at the end of a Lake Huron afternoon, ordered wide, split across the table, and followed, if the day runs long, by a motel room down the hall. Good food from a family that has made this corner of the lake its own, on the three nights it chooses to be open.

Three things this kitchen does the rest don’t

  1. 01

    Serbian-Balkan Comfort Menu

Veslo stands out around Grand Bend by putting schnitzel variations, Chevapi in lepina, Shopska salad, Sljivovica, and house soups at the centre of dinner.

  2. 02

    Culum Family Continuity

The official story connects the restaurant to Bob and Vesna Culum's 2006 start, with Aleks and Miki now carrying the ownership and management forward.

  3. 03

    Highway 21 Weekend Stop

The restaurant sits between Pinery, Port Franks, and Grand Bend, making it a planned weekend dinner stop rather than a generic roadside meal.
