Fort Erie sits directly across the Niagara River from Buffalo, and the plate at the centre of the menu at Southsides Patio Bar & Grill is the one the neighbouring city made famous: Buffalo Chicken Wings. It is a fitting anchor for a border-town bar-and-grill, and it is only the starting point. Southsides runs the wide comfort-food register a Niagara Boulevard grill is expected to cover, then keeps widening it — pub standards on one half of the menu, a Greek streak most of its neighbours do not carry on the other. The result is a menu a mixed table can order straight across without anyone settling.
The familiar half is deep. Buffalo Chicken Wings lead it, backed by a Homemade Burger and a Cheeseburger, Mozzarella Sticks, Onion Rings, and poutine — the shareable, low-effort centre of any first visit. The sandwiches carry their own weight, from a Philly Steak Sandwich to a Buffalo Chicken Wrap, and the seafood widens the lane again with Crab Cakes, Fish & Chips, and Fish Tacos. None of it reaches for reinvention. It is comfort food executed at the range a busy grill needs, the kind of ordering a table can do without studying the menu twice.
The other half is where Southsides separates from the pack. Souvlaki skewers, a Gyro Platter, a Greek Salad, and Stuffed Peppers give the kitchen a Mediterranean second gear a straight wings-and-burgers house does not have. It is not a Greek restaurant, and it does not pretend to be — the Mediterranean plates sit beside the grill orders as equals, not as a token nod. Between the souvlaki, the gyro, the salad, and the peppers, a table can eat almost entirely Mediterranean if it wants to. That breadth is the real identity here: a bar-and-grill that lets a diner build a night around souvlaki as easily as around wings.
The range says something about how Southsides sees its job. This is not a kitchen chasing a single signature; it is one built to be the answer when a table cannot agree. The plates that anchor the menu are the low-risk shareable choices a group starts from, and the Greek plates and seafood wait for whoever wants to wander further without leaving the casual format. In a Bridgeburg stretch of Fort Erie near the river, that flexibility is most of what a neighbourhood grill is for. Priced in the moderate range and set up for both dine-in and takeout, it reads as a restaurant that would rather be useful to everyone than essential to a few.
The setting does its share of the work. The patio on Niagara Boulevard is the part of Southsides most likely to shape a visit — an outdoor plan for the stretch of the year when the Niagara weather cooperates — and inside, the pull is a relaxed, unhurried atmosphere and easy, friendly service. Live music and DJ nights are a real part of the character, even if what is on any given night changes. The hours push it further: Southsides is open from noon until two in the morning, seven days a week, which lets one address work as a lunch counter, a dinner table, and a late bar without changing hands. Few places in the area keep that kind of clock.
Southsides has held its place on Niagara Boulevard since 1999, long enough to settle into what it is. It made breadth the point — open every day, past midnight, with a patio on the river road, music on the calendar, and a menu wide enough that the Buffalo wings, the souvlaki, and the fish tacos all answer to the same kitchen. Fort Erie borrowed its signature dish from the city across the water. Southsides built the rest of the table around it, and kept the lights on late enough to matter.
