Tacofino Tofino (Town)

8.1

First time here? Take the 30-second tour of how Restaurantica works!

The taco that anchors Tacofino is Mexican in shape and West Coast in nearly everything else: tempura-battered lingcod, chipotle mayo, cabbage and salsa fresca, folded to order and passed across a counter in the middle of Tofino. A surf town's seafood run through a Mexican street-food format is the through-line, and the Town location sets it down on Campbell Street, in the centre of the community rather than out along the water. Ordering is casual by design — step to the counter, carry a tray to a seat outside, and eat with your hands.

The menu stays compact and reads fast, with tacos and burritos holding the centre and the seafood doing the talking. The Fish Taco is the plainest statement of intent: fried lingcod, cabbage and chipotle mayo, nothing hidden. The Tuna Taco cools the whole thing down with seared albacore, wasabi mayo, wakame and pickled ginger, while Soft & Crunchy layers miso pork carnitas with miso mayo, kale slaw and gochujang across two textures at once. Beyond the tacos, the burritos build on the same ideas — the Fish Burrito packs the lingcod-and-salsa combination into something portable, the Miso Pork Burrito and Pork Gringa lean richer, and the Krispy Chicken Burrito keeps a fried option on the board alongside a Cheeseburger Taco for anyone chasing comfort over catch. Loaded Tater Tots handle the sides, a Churro S'more finishes the meal, and a Tofino Kombucha stands in for the bar.

What sets the Town menu apart is how comfortably it carries its East Asian accents. Wasabi mayo, wakame, miso, gochujang and pickled ginger are not garnishes bolted onto a Mexican base; they are load-bearing, and the kitchen trusts them to sit inside a taco without turning it into a gimmick. The seafood leaning — lingcod, albacore — reads as a straight answer to where the restaurant is, on the edge of the Pacific in a town that runs on the ocean. Even the Vegan Taco gets the same attention, built from black beans, guacamole, salsa, pickled red onion and cilantro as a dish in its own right rather than a substitution, and listed as gluten-free where the fried plates carry cross-contact cautions. The accents widen a small taco-and-burrito lineup without ever crowding out the tacos themselves, and the result is a menu with a clear point of view: casual food that takes its flavours seriously.

Tacofino began as a single food truck in Tofino in 2009, opened by Kaeli Robinsong and Jason Sussman. What started at the edge of a beach town grew into a West Coast name, and the Town location reads as a return — the same founders, the same seafood-forward tacos, now set in the centre of the place the business came from. Robinsong and Sussman are still the owners, and the line from that first truck to this counter is short and direct: the Fish Taco on the board today is a recognizable descendant of the one that started it all.

Day to day, the Town location works as an easygoing stop rather than a destination. The spacious outdoor dining area is the heart of it, doing as much work as the kitchen — the place a group lands after a day on the water, still salt-damp, to linger over a cold drink and split a tray before the next round of surf. It opens daily for lunch and dinner, takes walk-ins rather than reservations, and runs pickup for anyone who would rather eat their burrito on the sand. A table of friends, a family splitting an order, a solo traveller working through a taco and a kombucha — the counter meets each of them the same way, then sends them back out into Tofino.
