  • These guys certainly do it right. No frills, just great food. Friendly service. Clean facility. Warm weather so My wife and I ate outside with my two boys at the conveniently placed picnic tables. Loved the aroma of the smoky pit that wafted about as we dined. This place could be reason enough to take US301 through VA instead of interstate travel. Can't wait to get back!!

  • Order: Ribs, Pulled Pork, Chicken Fingers & Fries, Fresh cut watermelon

  • tracee says: "mmm mmm mmm" Jim says: "This is probably some of the best bbq I've had in the last decade, and good bbq is something that i seek out. I passed this place on the way to an appointment i had that involved a trip os several hundred miles. I noticed it because it's in what looks like a former gas station that's painted orange and says 'Crazy Ray's BBQ' in great big letters. Definitely showed some promise. when I got to the appointment (in richmond, almost a hundred miles away) I mentioned seeing it and someone there knew exactly what I was talking about and told me how good the food was. So, I made a point of stopping and picking up dinner for me and my wife. It was a two man operation, with a small eating area inside and a couple of picnic-type tables outside. the smell was killer! rich, thick, hickory aromas seasoned the air and I knew I was going to be in for a tough time trying to make the last hundred miles to my home without eating everything in the bag. So I put it in the trunk.
I have to say it was worth the wait. The BBQ was packed dry, and I got sweet sauce and medium sauce on the side. the BBQ was perfectly smoked -- pinkish when i tore it apart but the smoky flavor was not overwhelming -- it complemented the pork perfectly. the baked beans were simply the best i've ever had. rich sweet sauce with a mildly smoky quality, and with bits of pork to add taste and texture. And, unlike other places that add the "fatty" portions of the pork to the beans (which may be great for flavor in cooking but just don't taste that great) Crazy Ray uses door, meaty, chewy pork that sets if off.

I have no doubt that we'll be taking a ride to VA again soon, but the purpose of the trip this time is to get some more BBQ from Ray's.
