  • I went here because of the glowing reviews. What a mistake. I have had sushi in a lot of different places. This has the price, and look, but not the quality of a good sushi restaurant.

They put rock hard frozen blueberries in my salad? How's does it match the actual taste of the salad? Awful!

The BBQ eel was mushy and boney. The Shrimp tempura was from a frozen box as it looked completely different to the other tempuras. The sweet potato tempura still had the musty skin on it. Peel your yams for petes sake! The rest of the vegetable tempura was in various states of decomposition. Deep frying and breading it does not cover that up.

The sushi on the plate was inedible and a little suspect.

In conclusion do not get sucked in by the good reviews this place sucks.

  • The Sushi California is my personal favorite Japanese restaurant in Windsor. While there are others, the Sushi California is by far my favorite. To begin, the hostess is polite to a T and always makes sure that the guests are well taken care of. I must make it of note at this point when discussing the Sushi California; the appetizers are beyond amazing. While it's not for those with boring palates, the takoyaki is phenomenal. However, the real prize goes to the Okonomiyaki (sp?). It's definitely worth a try! When dining here, please be sure to try the unagi as well as the Volcano Roll, the Dragon Roll and the Crunch Roll. You will not be disappointed!! Now, I also strongly recommend the "A-la-carte" sushi items. While they can be somewhat costly when purchased in excess, they are quite divine and definitely worth a taste! One word of warning, let the takoyaki cool somewhat before delving in! They do get extremely hot! Overall, enjoy the Sushi California! The Okonomiyaki is simply divine as are the specialty roles. My main words of advice are to master the chop-sticks before attempting a foray into the world of sushi! That being said, you will not be disappointed and expect to be impressed at the Sushi California!

  • I pretty much survive on sushi and this is my favorite place in windsor. The waitress is always the same lovely, authentic looking lady which ads to the charm. The food isn't the fastest, but this is because it is made fresh, which I don't mind at all, i like to enjoy my company and the atmosphere is funky with cool decor and very clean. I highly recommend this place for REAL sushi, made by REAL sushi chefs, not grocery store style stuff. If you want fast food McDonalds is nearby, this place is for people that have a more refined taste.

  • This is consistently the best sushi restaurant in town. I've been to Hikari several times, but I think this place has better quality and flavor in their rolls.
This is a great place even though the service is slow: they have one, very attentive waitress and it is a small restaurant. Sushi is one thing that should be fresh and well prepared--obviously not for those inclined for fast food.

  • Order: bbq salmon skin roll, spicy tuna, yellow tail/scallion

  • Sushi is prepared very well. I don't like the prices however, especially for the size of the rolls. Could be a bit fairer. However, the other food is just as good and the service as well. I would visit again. It feels kind of crowded but not uncomfortable. You will be waiting a while if it's a full restaurant. There is no place inside to wait, either. Overall, not bad, I recommend. I'd much rather go to See Q though, they offer the house sauce and prices are better.

  • California Sushi is only an all right restaurant, in my opinion. i'd heard much about it so i was quite excited to finally try it out with some friends.

i didn't get sushi so they may excel in that aspect, i'm not too sure. my one friend says she prefers this place because you get complimentary miso soup and salad along with your order of sushi.

i ordered seafood udon and i ate it happily mainly because we'd spent hours in the freezing cold watching the Vancouver 2010 Olympic torch relay and it was hot soup with noodles. it's a bit expensive at $10 and it didn't stand out to me.

the restaurant itself looks okay, i didn't marvel at their decor. i wouldn't return here not because it sucks, but i prefer other Japanese restaurants that Windsor has to offer.

  • Order: udon

  • Sushi California is very audacious in the variety of their rolls and their tasty and mix of traditional/unusual combos. Pure quality from top to bottom. You can't say a word about the food. A class of its own.

The service is personable and sincere. Their one waitress is very polite and beautiful. However, the service can be on the slow side but they are very attentive and accommodating as you wait (Iguana's take note!).

A lovely restaurant inside. Great atmosphere and a perfect place for a date or dinner with friends.

Pure quality, no question about it.

  • We arrived on a busy Saturday night at 7:15pm and only waited two minutes for a table. We didn't think being out by 8:45 would be an issue, but little did we know....

It took 10 minutes for the lone waitress to come over and offer us drinks, at which time we ordered because we noticed how slow things were moving. It took another 15 for our soda waters to arrive. At 8pm my wife finally received her miso soup and 10 minutes later I received my gyoza soup.

At 8:20 we received our appetizer gyoza order, which was tasty but pretty standard. At 8:30 we got our Crabby Shrimp app, which was very flavourful, at which time I asked the waitress how long the rest would be (we ordered 4 sushi rolls) because we needed to be out in 15 mins.

At 8:40 we still hadn't received anymore food at which time I got up and told the waitress we had to go and I'll pay for what we ate.

Any other sushi restaurant I've visited in Windsor would have you out in no more than an hour, hour and a half max. I guess I should've mentioned that we had to be out at a certain time when we first sat down, but judging from our experience, I doubt that would've made a difference.

What we had was tasty and the restaurant itself was quaint and nicely decorated, but the service is slow and unattentive. I understand why because there was only one person on the floor, but the food coming out of the kitchen was extremely slow as well.

I'd usually give a restaurant another try if I've had good food but bad service, but this time was a little ridiculous.

PS - Even though the food and decor was ok, I gave them one star just to bring the total down. Not to bash but it was a horrible experience.

  • Order: Miso Soup, Gyoza Soup, Gyoza, Crabby Shrimp, Sushi Rolls

I agree with "discerning" food and atmosphere you said were fine so why rate them as a one just to be mean? This place has the best sushi in town. Biased review > : (

  • I love the sushi here... maybe the best in Windsor, but yeah the service is too slow and uneven. The sever is so charming and authentic that she makes me feel like I'm actually IN Japan though so I forgive it every time. And the fish is so delish that I can't resist dreaming of my next visit.

  • Order: Various raw and cooked fish and miso soup.
