  • The best sushi in Waterloo.

They have real wasabi. They make sushi properly. Their fish always tastes fresh. Their non-sushi dishes are delicious as well.

If you're in Waterloo, and a fan of good sushi (not the stuff all-you-can-eat places serve), you have to try Sakura Island.

  • Order: party trays, specialty rolls, sashimi, korean dishes etc etc

  • After reading the reviews I was a bit hesitant to try out this restaurant but luckily, it was a good experience.
Decor is stylish and modern and is vastly different than what the store's exterior suggests.
We were seated immediately and drinks were ordered while we waited for the rest of our party to arrive. Service was excellent as they kept on checking in to see if we were ready to order and we were not forgotten even though the restaurant is quite busy on a Thursday afternoon.

The food came out after 15 mins and was gorgeous. It tasted fresh and delicious and yes, a bit on the smaller size but I split some rolls between a friend and he was quite full by the end of it. The other two I came with ordered bentou boxes and they looked amazing; will be ordering those next time.
The salad it came with was very tangy but a bit too much apple for my taste.
The spicy salmon rolls had too much spicy mayo on it that was overwhelming.
Besides that the experience was overall quite good.

  • Order: Spicy salmon maki, tempura maki combo between 2 ppl, teriyaki chicken bentou, tempura bentou

  • Absolutely terrible restaurant. Went in with a $15 off coupon from a coupon book, and when I went to pay the waitress told me it was a typo and was supposed to be 15% off instead. I asked to talk to the manager, he came out and asked "Whats your problem?" and told me I was an idiot for not realizing it was a typo. Not kidding. I told him he should put up a sign to warn customers, and he kept repeating that I was an "idiot and didn't understand".

Been there on previous occasions, most of the reviews here are accurate. I waited ~ 1 hr for food at a very small restaurant, and it was sub par quantity (very small maki, fine for an all u can eat but not for a la carte). Quality of maki is about average. Sashimi is either frozen or dried out, not sure how this place stays in business.

Will never go again with service like this. Clearly taking advantage of customers seeing the offer then coming in, rejecting the offer at the bill. I would have been fine with it if the manager had been polite and said "it was an honest mistake, we're putting up a sign now to correct this."

Anyone looking to go here, please drive up King another 2 km and go to Ye's Sushi, much better quality and extremely fast, and way cheaper to boot.

  • Order: Various maki combos, tea

  • My daughter was off school and always chooses sushi if it is just the two of us. On a friends recommendation we tried Sakura and were pleased we did. Our food arrived quickly and was nice and fresh (as it should), service was prompt and efficient even in the busy lunch hours.

  • Order: rolls, sashimi, miso soup

  • I was pleasantly surprised by this place.
I quite enjoy sushi and I had seen this location a few times but it never really caught my eye. From the outside, it looks kind of run down.
I was with a couple friends and one suggested we have dinner at this place. Once inside, it is actually very beautiful! If you call ahead, you can reserve one of their private little dining rooms, but they were all occupied when we arrived.
The food came out fast (as sushi normally does) and it was all very delicious. The sashimi came in generous portions, and the rolls were awesome.
It is a little pricey, but worth it. I will be back!

  • I've been to Sakura Island many times, and each time the food and the service is excellent. Their sushi always tastes fresh and generally makes a hearty meal with what appears to be complementary miso soup (I've never been charged for it...even if I don't order a combo).

The service is excellent - the servers are polite. I am generally greeted by the chef and/or a hostess when I enter.

For me, this is the best sushi restaurant in Waterloo :)

  • My boyfriend and I have been here many times, it is actually the first restaurant he had ever taken me too. I loved it and I have loved it ever since.
The service there is great. We have always had the same waitress and she is probably by far the best that has ever served us. She was always making sure we were ok and taken care of. Not to mention that the food is always wonderful.
I would go back and we keep going back, I am actually getting sone take out after work tonight lol.

  • I'm guessing something has drastically changed at Sakura since the past reviews were posted. I've gone maybe 8 times in the past 18 months and have not once had a bad experience. I've only gone for dinner once, as I'll admit that the place is expensive. But they've got the best sashimi in KW, and that makes it worth it for me.

The fish is always fresh (never frozen - you can tell) and comes in large portions when ordering sashimi or sushi. The rolls are delicious and the chef takes the extra time to make them visually appealing as well.

Atmosphere is very nice and the service is usually quite speedy. I try to get there a bit later (1-1:30) for lunch though, as it can be quite busy.

If you haven't been in a while (or were scared off by previous reviews), definitely give Sakura a shot. Yes it's expensive, but I haven't found higher quality anywhere else in town.

  • Order: miso soup, toro salmon and tuna sashimi, rolls

  • Food was reasonable though over-priced, even with the much cheaper lunch menu. I can't imagine paying their prices on the dinner menu. Service was horrible even though there was only one other party of two in the restaurant. I'm not prepared to pay those prices if I have to keep getting up to ask where the food is, again for our drinks and again for our bill. They must be joking.

  • Order: Sushi; Beef Teryaki.
