  • Since we don't like making our own turkey, we decided to go to The Tulip to try their thanksgiving turkey dinner.
We sat down, ordered and in less than 10 minutes, our turkey dinners came. There were mashed potatoes, carrots, turkey with gravy and cranberry sauce and stuffing. Everything was delicious, except the turkey was just a little dry.
The turkey dinners were $12.95 each and if you added 3 dollars, you could get a salad and a pumpkin pie or rice pudding. We chose to get the pumpkin pie and it was gooood!

  • This is a neat little place for steaks in the gentrified toronto neighborhood. Pretty much open all day they do steak and nothing but. Meat lovers get what they want and that is that.

Pay at the door and that means you aint leaving hungry Big portions

  • I have been there about 30 times. Consistent excellent food. The steaks, home fries and sauteed mushrooms are simply amazing. We have had to wait a bit for service at times and it is so popular that we do not go for dinners on weekends due to the line-ups. If you want a great steak you have to try them but don't forget the mushrooms! Breakfasts are also excellent and not greasy.

  • I order mash potatoes with my ribs; however, was given fries. I was not able to change since it was difficult to find a server to change it. Thus I stuck with the fries. On the positive note: there was a lot of fries; however, the negative side: fries were soft and mushy.
My Ribs were huge! I like the sauce that came with it since it improved the taste of my fries.

The location is great and walking distance of the theaters.

  • Expect a 10 minute wait. Service could be a little scattered yet with a helpful attitude - but this place is a FACTORY. It's pretty successful, and I'm sure a lot of times it's pretty good. I didn't mind some things but I left feeling a bit grossed out.

My steak was pretty okay and well-presented as far as cooking goes. I'm not sure it didn't taste a little too funky on a few parts so I did not finish this well-aged cut. The potatoes must have been reheated from the mash kettle made in the early morning, with a clumpy / crumbly texture tumbling right off the fork, and lacking all appealing mealiness one hopes for in mash. Shame Tulip!! Pointless bitter raw onion lurks beneath a few slice tomato. Side veg of steam broccoli and cauliflower was nicely crunchy and flavorful. The heaps of buttered white bread were satisfyingly yeasty, surprisingly good given the unpromisingly retro look. The little 1950's salads with Kraft-style Italian dressing were more amusing than fortifying.
Against my own inclination my friends even ordered appetizers; shrimp cocktail with four mealy shrimp and some tomato horseradish; the mussels (in white wine?) arrived in a funky haze of garlic and something else I did not like so I did not go near them - it was off-putting and I don't ever chance mussels that don't arrive smelling immaculately presented. I was told they were "bland" and my sister did not feel well later.
All in all The Tulip had the slightly greasy and tired aura of a diner that never closes and welcomes all comers with efficient courtesy. It has a kind of fun old-school vibe but I'd have to eat there more to decide if I like it. I felt perhaps some steak dinners people have enjoyed there might have been quite good, but I don't think mine was that great.
A successful formula anyway - if you order a steak 'medium' to 'rare' expect to see some pink to red color in the middle. Most restaurants simple overcook steak to avoid having them sent back for de-pinking, as two of our party did - was adeptly handled by staff. Actually the med-rare steak that was ordered with a thick band of red was almost blue by some standards. God love them for being hardcore about their beef, because overcooking a beef lover's steak would be an insult. There are some respectably beef-friendly reds on the wine menu.

Again, my general impression is of a slightly weird, uncomfortable meal and I'm hoping my next one will be more in line with the stellar reputation. Try a less busy panicked time than Saturday Night & hope for a great cut and optimal overall presentation. Don't write them off because of me.

  • Order: Steak Sirloin Med-well w/mash, veg, salad. we all had variations of the Sirloin.

  • I have lived around the corner from The Tulip for over 7 years and used to eat there frequently. But no more. First was a long hair in the food. Ick. The last time there was a staple in my guests home fries. Absolutely Disgusting. Not only that, there was no reduction in our bill and no apology from the staff.

  • The above date is not actual. A friend and I go for breakfast at the Tulip about once a month. Their steaks are consistently awesome, they're always just as ordered. The eggs, homefries and toast are always exactly the same - perfect. The service is excellent and the staff are always friendly. This place is very popular and busy on Sunday mornings, there will be a line-up to get in anytime between 9 and 2 on Sundays. We always visit the Tulip on Saturday mornings.

  • Order: Steak and eggs. Steak - medium rare, eggs over-easy, homefries, whole wheat toast, coffee and orange juice.

  • The steak was perfect. Grilled just the way I asked for. The service was fast and friendly with a diner atmosphere. I'm actually might be going there for father's day. If you haven't tried it, it's worth the trip!

  • Order: I ordered steak and mashed potatoes w. a side of gravy. It even came with a slice of homemade bread.
