  • I've tried over a dozen pho places and this is the worst I've had so far.

    1) Portion size was a joke. I ordered a LARGE rare beef + brisket pho and was served a kids meal. There was plenty of soup but barely enough noodles to fill a cup.

    2) Soup had way too much MSG, get ready to drink at least half a litre of water after the meal. Noodles were too soft, the rare beef & brisket were both too tough. Uninspiring soup, I've had much better.

    3) Horrible service if you sit in a corner, the waiters will walk by you without noticing.

  • This was not one of the worst pho experiences (try Oshawa in the mid 90's) I've ever had but it was certainly heading in that direction. I ordered a bowl of pho with rare beef; the soup is usually hot enough to slowly cook the slices of pink meat. WRONGO!! The soup was warm but far from hot. No chance of burning my mouth here. As result, the rare meat stayed bright pink right until the end. By this time the broth was luke warm and showing it's fat globules.

May be it was for the best that they were stingy on the accompanying garnish of lime, basil and bean sprouts. The basil was some of the worst I've seen and the beans sprouts had a slighltly brown tinge to them. Asking for fresh chillies was a mistake, there were none to be had, a first for me, even in the worst of places.

The taste could be described as "subtle" which is to say it was somewhat lacking. I think the spices were thrown from the other side of the kitchen and most of them ended up on the floor. May be that's what the meat and potatoes/white bread crowd that frequents this area would enjoy but I sort of doubt it and definitely not those who love good Asian cuisine. This city has too many choices, even in the area of Vietnamese cuisine, to serve cold, somewhat bland soup.

If the restauant was crowded then a lame excse might be avaiable but I was at the fifth table occuppied in a rather large eatery. May be the chefs were having an off day or was that a day off?

Those that enjoy pho for its tastiness will be disappointed here. Order the burger or at least something else. May be a cold dish.

  • I always go to Pho Hung on Spadina and the food is really great there. The people are really nice too!

But these few times we have been to the one on bloor.. may be the worst pho experiences ever!
Food is not as good as the spadina one.. and on one occassion when we asked for some napkins..(because mine was clearly STUCK on the table) we were asked "what you need them for"? and were denied napkins...!

Another time, my friend ordered noodles in soup that she could not finish and asked for a take out container.. and was denied because the manager said that if we take it home, the noodles will expand and make us sick. No matter what we said, no take out box.. I wonder whats wrong with eating it an hour later? The manager claims that its written in the menu..: which clearly states that the beef are sliced thinly..!?

But she said if we bring our own container, we can pack it... uh..?
Anyways, maybe too cheap for a $0.05 styrofoam container and some napkins

Oh and did I mention that they also gave me the wrong order of Pho? but I guess again, the manager was too cheap to remake it, so she convinced the waiter to just serve it.

  • One of the best Vietnamese places in the city. Have been eating there for at least 15 years and the quality is consistently high. Great value.

  • A friend and I stopped in for a quick meal, as we were on a time schedule due to an upcoming concert at the Royal Conservatory across the street.
We found the food was fresh and delicious. It was nice that we were offered a pot of green tea for free to clean our palates.
Our food came within a fairly quick time frame, considering they were busy. I thought the price of $8.00 was very good for the portion served.
Even though the ambience could have been a little better, the price was right and we would definitely both go back again.

  • Visiting Toronto, we were excited to see this restaurant after a visit to the ROM (Royal Ontario Museum). The restaurant is right across the street, so we gave it a try. Nothing fancy, but being upstairs, most tables have nice views of Bloor Street West and the ROM. Food was great. Ordering was unique in that they leave a pen and you fill out your orders and amount totals. Sodas served cold in cans, which was a bit odd. Still, we were happy overall and went back for another meal during our week stay.

  • I've been going here for about 8 years - and I'd never had a really bad meal, until recently.

I went for dinner and ordered the same thing I usually get - the pork vermicelli with spring roll. Usually it's hot and good - and they give you the big bottle of fish sauce. Service is usually good, not great. But good.

But this time, I don't know what was going on in the kitchen. They were not really busy, a few empty tables.

My food arrived - and I started to mix in the bowl of fish sauce. The noodles were cold and hard. They were shaped like the bowl. The meat was not hot. The only hot thing in my dish was the spring roll.

I figured that a bit more fish sauce and chilli would loosen things up - but I was wrong. I didn't have time to wait for another meal. I ate a bit of the noodles and most of the meat and spring roll. It was not tasty. The hard dry noodles were almost disgusting.

They obviously had a line up bowls with noodles on the counter that they just plopped the meat on as ordered. Then put a spring roll on top. Who knows how long my noodles had been sitting before I got them?

Usually - it's good. But just one bad experience like that has definitely made me think twice about ever going back.

  • In my personal opinion I find the best food comes from places that usually may be cramped, or may have so-so service. Pho hungs is probably one of my favourite restaurants downtown. If you're looking for something quick, cheap, and absolutely delicious phos is definitely the place to go.

They aren't going for elegance, but thats not the point. The food is delicious and cheap. And as a student whose time is limited, money is short, and nutrition is at an all time low I find Phos the best place to go.

Favourite place to go. Enough said.

  • Pho Hung is a horrible restaurant, with below average food, terrible service, and questionable cleanliness.

Food: The food used to be good, but has quickly degenerated. Pho is supposed to be flavorful, with the bits of meat cooking in the hot broth adding a distinct taste to the soup. Alas, the pho here was little more than boiled salted water. The strips of meat available were minimal. The vermicelli and spring rolls were cold and hard, almost as if they were reheated before being served. The iced juices they serve are also terrible - too much processed powder, not enough fruit.

SERVICE: The service is surly, which is unsurprising considering that management apparently pays close to slave wages. The food never comes on time, requests for more tea and water are frequently ignored, and plates are taken away before one is finished eating. Management also has the habit of randomly accusing their predominantly student clientele with bizarre 'crimes'. For example, a friend was recently accused of stealing a menu (?). Another friend was accused of not paying the bill previously - this is preposterous because while most students are on a tight budget, who would really attempt to get away with stealing a $5 bowl of Pho? Others have mentioned that their servers provide *particularly* bad service to people of African descent; coincidentally, those two friends who were accused of stealing a menu and not paying the bill were from minority backgrounds.

HYGIENE: Servers carry glasses of water via the rim of the glasses, so their fingers are (almost) immersed in the liquid. Countertops are sticky. The kitchen has random bits of cardboard acting in lieu of proper kitchen mats - interestingly, vegetables are propped onto these cardboard mats.

  • I have been visiting Pho Hung since my university days and I have always found it to be decent food and a good value. The serving sizes are generous, the service is quick, and the food tastes good. The tables are a bit cramped, however, and the place is often packed and noisy. I'm sorry to read that the previous reviewer had such a bad experience there, but I've always been satisfied.
