I've gone to George several times, and each time I come out thinking "Wow, that was a great experience".
Each time I've gone, I've gotten the tasting menu, and have never been disappointed. I've had the regular 7 course tasting, and it was fantastic, I've also had a 7 course vegetarian on a seperate visit, and it was good was well, my only complaint was that in the vegetarian tasting, some elements were repeated.
Service at George has always been one of the best in the city for me. The lenghts they go to, to satisfy you is unbelievable. On one occasion it was snowing, we arrived late, around 9:30pm, they encouraged us to stay as long as we wanted. By the time we left at 1 am, we had been the last patrons there by well over an hour. Not only was service always prompt, friendly, and well advised, I walked out to find that they had cleared a path to my car, and cleared the snow off my car!
On another visit, again, we arrived late, 10 pm on a weeknight. We initially ordered the 7 course vegetarian, not realizing we arrived at closing. The chef came and asked if we could do the 5 course instead as it was late. We didn't make a big deal of it, and agreed. I guess the chef de cuisine felt bad, because she went on with the 7 course tasting, and comped the last two plates. I asked if they had coffee to go, the waiter said no. Again, we didn't make a big deal of it. Later when the bill came, the waiter handed me a cup of coffee.....he ran across the street and got me coffee.
Always good service! Romantic, good food. It's not terribly expensive, as they're going with the tapas craze, but I always manage to spend alot, as they always make me want to stay longer.
Oh yes, and they have one of the most accessible wine menus in the city. It's so easy to find a good bottle under $80, and few are over $200.

I find it hard to believe that anyone giving George a bad review has actually been there. Two friends took me there for my birthday dinner and it was a lovely experience. We each got the tasting menu (vegetarian for me, regular for them) and we were all blown away by the food.
The "surprise" tasting menu consists of six courses chosen by the chef. Everyone received something different at each course. The ingredients were all fresh, mostly local, and in season. It's evident that a lot of thought and care goes into this food.
We also had a series of wonderful servers, one of whom in particular seemed to know everything about the large selection of wines and made several excellent recommendations for us. The price makes this restaurant a "special occasion only" place for me, but I'll definitely be back some time.
