Caz's Great Fish

you can get fish and chips here for 412 (halibut it is not haddock) and put as much vinegar and sauce you want which is good. I always stck up on ketchup and relish and ask for extra fries.
the food is just ok but I dont want to pay more unless I am with a female colleague which means I will go up to $15 if it is my turn to pay. -Frank

I visited Caz's at the beginning of the lunch hour, and I was delighted at the quality of the food and the service. I received an enormous serving of halibut and a large plate of chips for a very reasonable price (especially judging by downtown Toronto standards). The fish tasted fresh and not at all greasy. The restaurant was extremely clean, I did not have to wait in line for service, and the service was friendly. I would definitely come back again.

It's been a few years since I've eaten Caz's and I was unpleasantly surprised at how it's changed. After waiting ten minutes for the sole employee to emerge from the back room (after another customer went back there to get her) I ordered "Caz's Best", halibut & chips, on sale for $9.99 from the usual $12+. I received a small portion of chips (for ten bucks I expect at least a pound) which while clearly being twice-cooked, looked and tasted like generic frozen fries - too small, too crispy, not a speck of skin. On top was a decent sized bit of fish coated in thick, greasy undercooked batter that even excessive amounts of salt&malt couldn't make palatable. Underneath the batter the halibut was extra-fishy-tasting, suggesting that the discount was intended to get rid of extra-old stock. I ordered for take-out, and my food was packed in a standard styrofoam takeout box with a bit of tinfoil on the bottom. Aside from the environmentally hostile switch away from recyclable newsprint packaging, I wonder if putting screaming-hot deep fried food into a melty plastic container is wise.
I suppose I should have been scared off by the size of Caz's current menu - starters? cheesy garlic bread? Greek salad? In future I'll stick to places that sell a few types of battered fried fish served with proper chips, (and coleslaw of course) and doesn't see the need for fancy menus and websites.

It is pretty much a takeout place, but the fish is one of the best in the city. I live downtown and at most of the fish and chip places around here the fish is not that good and the portions are small. Here the fish is great and the portions were a good size too. We will definitely get fish from them again.

My parter and I frequent this location and are always pleased. The fish is prepared to perfection the batter is crisp and light. It seems like they clean the oil frequently as I have never had dirty fish or chips there. Excellent location.
