  • DON'T BE SWAYED BY THE ATMOSPHERE! The food there is very good for a very good price. The atmosphere is a refreshing retro and the servers are very nice. Great if you need to be in and out in less than 20 minutes. I reccomend the Chicken Cutlet, Fish, and grilled cheese and bacon sandwich.

  • This place is located mid block on the south side of Ontario street. If you have trouble finding it look for the hideous Yellow and Pink awning on the front of HH Deila the card shop...the restaurant is to the right.

Where to have lunch today? Somewhere were we haven't been perhaps....the Elizabethan of course! The last time I was in this place was right after it opened in 1970. My mother took me in there for lunch.

    Guess what?

I felt like I had programed the holi-deck on the Enterprise for "Stratford restaurant circa 1970"!....walked through the door and bang... back to 1970. Sheet Vinyl flooring made to look like tile, skip trowled white plaster and fake wooden beams. The tables have red and white checked table clothes and the tiniest and lightest weight chairs known to man. Even the cash register...yes register...not terminal....is the origanal. The frames of bullet glass at the front and the three rooms stretching back to the kitchen in a sort of cavernous way were exactly as I recalled it some 38 years ago. I think the patrons where all the same too. Lots of blue rinsers and tri-focals.

I was there with my youngest son...age 17. I had forgetten how much noise those old registers made until she rang up a bill. Shades of check out at Dominion store at Waterloo and Downie flashed back with five or six going at the same time.

I ordered a "super club" came with fries and I also had a diet coke. Son had the "cheeseburger lunch"...burger, fries, drink (sprite) and coleslaw. The club was passable but nothing special, the fries where from frozen. Son said the cheese burger was good. We also ordered onion rings which for $3.25 was going to prove interesting we figured. It was...they came in a cereal bowl.

They had probably 6 "specials of the day". One we saw came out and it was turkey, gravey, fries or mashed and vegatable. A plate load of food for $7.25.

This is a place that you probably walk by 50 times in a month. It never looks open though. The bullet glass and the way the entry is set up never beckons you to come in.

The menu....looks like 1970 to. Standard southern Ontario fare of the time...oh there was a curry on the menu so I'll give them that.

If you are into time travel...drop in.

  • Quite a nice place, a quiet aura. Food was good: the hot roll was fresh and hot, but the butter was generic. The meat sauce mingled with the salad dressing because they were in the same plate, which made a little of the salad inedible, but the jello was nice, if a bit crumbly. Loved the checkered tablecloths.

  • Order: Had the meat sauce spaghetti special: hot roll with a tossed garden salad and spaghetti w/ meat sauce, followed by jello. Drink was ice water

  • A wonderful breakfast, with absolutely no grease. Instead of the usual homefries served with bacon and eggs, both the eggs and the pancakes came with freshly cut orange slices and berries. The coffee is good and strong. Breakfast the way it used to be served. Waitress was friendly and helpful, the service was very quick.

  • Order: Eggs, bacon, Griddle cakes, porridge.
