  • I LOVE AMA SO MUCH! This is the best place to have sushi! I am so glad it is only 3 mins away from where I live! I have been going here since it opened and was run down. They have definitely made a lot of changes since then but the food has stayed amazing! I would recommended going to ama over any sushi place!

  • Order: spicy slamon roll, salmon sushi pizza, gyoza, bento box

  • I've been living in this neighbourhood for quite a few years now, and i've been going to this place ever since. This is a neighbourhood kind of restaurant with very friendly staff. I'm trying to eat healthier, so when i consider eating out, Ama Sushi is probably one of the healthiest place to eat around here. The food in this place never disappointed me over the years, they have the BEST Spicy Salmon roll, and i have tried it in many sushi restaurants around GTA. Their bento boxes are very good with a decent price for the amount of food you get. Service is great, although sometimes it can be slower when it's busy, which is understandable with smaller restaurants.
They do delivery as well which is quite convenient for me if i don't want to leave my house.
Definately one of my favourite restaurants.

  • My husband and I recently moved to West Rouge and wanted to try out something other than fish n chips so we headed down to Ama Sushi for dinner. We love our sashimi (not big on rolls and other "fillers") and wanted to try out the closest Japanese spot, Ama Sushi was it.

My first impression when we walked into the restaurant was, "is this place under renovation?" We were both a little surprised to see a cafeteria style tables with cheap metal chairs filled the dining room. Moreover, they had medium sized speakers (the ones you would stand on the floor) mounted horizontally over one of the tables (an accident waiting to happen) through which they repeatedly played a bad piano version of "eternal flame" the whole time we were dining. This alone was enough to drive me crazy. What's wrong with a radio station if you only have one song you have to play over and over again???? But I digress.

As soon as we sat down, the server asked if we wanted something to drink (some sort of greeting would have been nice). After some deliberation, we ordered Kobe Sashimi Combo (18 pieces) at $19.95 and a bento box at $9.95 to share between us.

Almost immediately, the server brought out two small bowls of salad which consisted only of iceberg lettuce topped with bland Japanese style dressing and two miso soups that were also bland (no hint of bonito at all) with seaweed pieces that were too tough to chew (should have soaked it longer before cooking it). Great start to the meal.

Kobe sashimi plate at $19.95 came with 6 pieces of thawed out, previously frozen imitation crab meat pieces, three microscopic pieces of squid, three decent sized salmon, three not so healthy looking tuna and three dry looking snapper pieces. The quality of the fish was definitely lacking and to serve 6 pieces of imitation crab meat as a part of $19.95 sashimi platter was just shameless.

To add insult to injury, they filled both soy sauce bottles with regular soy sauce. There were two soy sauce bottles on the table, one with a green lid, usually meaning low sodium soy sauce and one with a red lid, usually meaning regular soy sauce. Sashimi is meant to be eaten with lighter soy sauce as the delicate flavours of the raw fish can be over-powered by stronger soy sauce. But who cares? Soy sauce is a soy sauce and they're all the same, right?

The bento box didn't fare any better. It consisted of two pieces of fried (previously frozen, store bought) dumplings, tempura (one shrimp, one zucchini, one eggplant, one broccoli) with old tasting batter/or frying oil, small flattened piece of sliced chicken teriyaki atop another bland collection of teriyaki vegetables that tasted bitter (probably the zucchini) with some white rice.

We managed to eat what we could and when we couldn't take another replay of their beloved piano version of "eternal flame," we paid our bill at the front and left.

Needless to say, Ama Sushi served up the WORST insult to Japanese cuisine we've ever had the misfortune to taste and my husband and I will never go back to Ama Sushi, ever.

  • Order: Kobe sashimi combo (18 pieces) & Bento box (can't recall the name)

  • Since I moved into this area over 2 yrs ago, I was quite happy to know there is a "real" Japanese restaurant here. I've been going there regularly (once or twice a week!). In the last 3 months, I found the quality lacking. The portion size and freshness have been compromised. I do order alot of take out and deliveries and when it comes to raw fish, it is so important that it is fresh. However, the last few orders( sashimi dinner , chirashi), it was a bit off. The rolls ie, golden dragon, green dragon, red dragon etc. priced at $7.95 are getting smaller and the ingredients as well ( compared to other authentic Japanese restaurants though charge $8.95, they are slightly more than twice the size and comparable about of ingredients to rice). How can a regular avocado roll, 6 pieces, quite small at $3.75 be almost the same size at the dragon rolls? I am very disappointed with that and I will no longer patron this restaurant.

  • Order: Tried at least 70% of the menu over the last couple of years.

  • The service was quick because we were the only people in the restaurant at the time, however we still had to look for our waitress when we wanted to order more food. The food here was delicious! My brother and I are huge fans of the "All you can eat" sushi restaurants. This place is really close to our home and it was our first time here and we look forward to our next visit. I will definitley recommend this place to my friends who have a huge appetites!

  • Order: we drank green tea & we had the all you can eat buffet shrimp tempura roll, chicken teryaki, salmon teryaki, dumpling, short-ribs

  • The skewered chicken wasn't anything spectacular, though their Sushi was pretty good. They tend to give you small pieces of fish on your sushi (at least for all you can eat), but otherwise it is tasty.

My wife was especially happy with the sushi portions they served here, she typically likes smaller pieces that she can fit in her mouth.

Only complaint is that they can be a bit slow serving Sushi, while the cooked food seems to come out quite quickly.

  • The sushi here is sub-par and the service is slow. The tempura tastes like fish and chips. If you want really good sushi, spend the extra 5min. in the car and go to Kobo sushi - 512 kingston road in rosebank plaza (pickering) its way, way better.

  • Order: Sushi - duh.
