  • Loved Mackies as a kid, so took our family there. Quite disappointed. We ordered the fish and chips - and when it came, dismayed to find it was two quite small fillets ( about the size of a large cigarette lighter each) placed on top of a pile of over cooked, bland fries. What fish we did get was unseasoned and quite tasteless. I know beach side eateries are as much about the location as the food, but I could not help feeling quite dissatisfied by the small portions. Maybe they were having an off day, but I doubt we will be back.

  • Order: Fish and chips, burgers and fries.

  • As aa kid growing up in the area, visiting Mackies on hot summer days was trradition. Sitting on the beach, eating french fries drowned in the famous Mackies sauce was always a great way to spend an afternoon! I always remember the lineups being out the door, but it was worth it for the special sauce alone!

Recently I returned to Mackies on a cool Spring day, craving those fries & sauce I grew up on. The food hasn't changed much & other than expanding, the restaurant hasn't changed much either. My biggest disappintment was the fact that for years they served their delicious fries in round, cardboard containers with colourful stripes that reminded me of the circus. To my dismay, they have now replaced these containers with styrofoam! Maybe it was a more inexpensive option as opposed to the cardboard, perhaps they could no longer order the previos containers? I think it was a very nonenvironemntally friendly decision to choose a container that will (A) not break down organically, (B) end up floating in Lake Erie & potentially harm any fish & wildlife left out there & (C) help keep the oil industry in business in the manufacturing of these chemically produced materials. Sorry Mackies, as much as I love your food & famouse fry sauce, I'm not willing to sacrifice the balance of nature & help to harm Mother Earth, just to satisfy a craving. I hope that management comes to their senses & returns to the cardboard bowls that are more earth friendly...until that day, you won't see me back.

  • Order: french fries & a hot dog

  • It is not what it use to be. We had hamburges, fries and orange drink. Hamburger was middle of the road. I think the fries were left over from the night before and had been reheated a few times in the oil. The orange drink was orange water. From the days I remembered as a kid going there it has slipped down. At one time we use to make a special trip London to Mackies just for the fries and orange aide.

  • Order: 3 hamburgers, fries, and orange drink

  • This place is somewhere I go ever summer im in port. I know some people get mad because they do tend to take a hour to get you food (sarcasim) but I understand it. there are so many people on the beach everyday there you cant expect a short line. However thats about the only bad thing. This place has amazing food, fun for the kids and I love that its right on the beach. When i was little this was one of my summer highlights Mackie sauce :). if you want some great food eat here.

  • We basically go here for the fry sauce. Wish I could duplicate it at home so I wouldn't have to pay $20 for 2 fries and 2 watered down orangeades and a teeny weeny hot dog that my husband polishes off in 2 bites. Seems a little ridiculous.... but the sauce is that good. We like going to Port Stanley and will probably return to Mackie's but more and more we are trying more places to eat in the area.

  • Like many people from the Port Stanley/St thomas area, I have been going to Mackies all of my life. As a kid, my parents took me there on special occasions. As a teenager, we skipped school to go to the beach, and Mackies was always on the agenda. Since then, the food has gone so far down hill, that it is purely location that is keeping them in business. The Orangeade is watered down. No footlong hotdogs, frozen nasty burgers, and so much more. But more so than anything else.....The fries. For those of you who have not been there for a while, let me tell you. They have switched from the great fresh cut fires, to frozen shipped in coated fries. The coated fries do not taste as good with the Mackies sauce, and most of all for my family, if you have any problems with Gluten, you can no longer have their fries. With allergies and celiacs desease on the increase, they have just iscolated an entire group of people. Who can no longer eat there. My son has always enjoyed going to Mackies for french fries as a treat. He can not eat fries most places because he is deathly allergic to wheat. Mackies was always an option. No more!!!! So, no more beach for our family. To the new management, I have only one suggestion. Go back to the basics. Like the good old days. Make the food good, with good service and you will never faulter. So many of us come purely for sentimental reasons. Keep the quality and we will always come back!! But for now anyways, good bye Mackies. I will miss you!!!

Actually, for your information, our fries are still fresh cut, not bought and coated. Work on your judgement.

  • My son and daughter-in-law and 2 grandchildren and I were in Port Stanley on Tuesday. I insisted upon going to Mackie's because I remembered going there as a child and also bringing my own children there when they were young. They used to have foot-long hotdogs and the best orangeade ever. Extremely disappointing! No more foot-longs, and the orangeade seemed watered down. The fries weren't very good either, and the small hotdogs were no better. What happened? New management cheaped out or something. They have shot themselves in the foot. If it weren't for the location of the place, I would probably not return.

  • A very large cafeteria style restaurant on the beach in Port Stanley. Open concept is the name of the game here. Lots of booths to sit in with a very long line up area, a condiment stand, and large video game area for the kiddies or those inclined. Overall the place seems bleak though. When I went it was very busy. There were probably 50-60 people in line. Service was pretty quick when you think about how many people were waiting in line, I might have waited 20-25 minutes. But the servers are all high school kids who don't give a rats behind, and I don't blame them really. I probably wouldn't be overly friendly either if I had to take 400-500 orders a day.

I had fries and a bacon cheeseburger. Frozen patties are used here, and the buns are the cheap wonder bread kind. Fries were just ok, but the saving grace was the sauce they come with. I also put it on my burger to make it more appealing.

My meal was about $8.50, and my partners was the same. It was about $20.00 for the pair of us to eat here. Normally for a meal I don't mind paying that or much more, but the food here is average at best, and the only reason people go here is because of the convenient location to the beach.

Overall, long wait times, average food at best, prohibitive pricing, and standard service. I probably won't go back unless I have no other options. Why would you wait in line 30 minutes to over pay for mediocrity?
