Hoshi Japanese Restaurant

My husband and I have tried all sushi places in Peterborough and this is our favourite. We go to this place whenever we are in the mood for sushi... it's great!

I came here for takeout, but the decor and atmosphere are so appealing that next time I'll be eating in. The staff were friendly an efficient and my food was ready in five minutes.

Very enjoyable maki rolls. I personally would not order the dynamite rolls again as I found the shrimp tempura to be a little bit greasy. But that's just personal preference. I can't wait to get back and sample some more of their huge variety of sushi!

I haven't tried Matsu yet, and I see everyone rave about how it's the best Sushi place in Peterborough. If that's true, it must be truly stellar, because Hoshi is well above average! I'll be going back to Hoshi's again to get my sushi fix soon!

UPDATE: I'm keeping the bottom part of my review as it was a representation of what the restaurant was like last year. However, the improvement has been vast since then. Service was impeccable. The waiter was very courteous and helpful. The best part is the sashimi. Maybe it's just the right catch this time around, but I haven't had fish this fresh in Peterborough, or most places in Toronto for that matter; especially not at this price range. We ordered the Osaka lunch, which consists of 6 pieces nigiri, 6 sashimi (both daily fish), and 6 california roll. Instead we were given 4 extra pieces of sashimi and 1 extra nigiri each. I've been lucky to receive free pieces at a few sushi restaurants before, but not at that quantity.

In all honesty, fish is incredibly fresh and very well priced. Gives Matsu a run for its money. If you like White Tuna, you're in for a treat.

Sushi is the most popular sort of Japanese restaurant in North America, and also one that is usually executed poorly.

Hoshi has a good environment, and quite friendly staff. The construction of their tempura and sushi is also pulled off well, but their big flaw is in the freshness of the fish. While it is adequate and will please most who are inexperienced with sushi eating, fanatics will not find it all that tasteful. Miles ahead of Sapporo, but falls behind Matsu.

Don't bother with the seafood tempura platter. You will find a scarce amount of it hidden amongst the piles of vegetables.

Also, be warned that they have labeled their platters deceivingly. Nigiri platter does not mean you will get plenty of nigiri zushi. About 1/3rd of the platter is nigiri. Save your money and order the makimono set if you must. Oh and "delivery charge may apply) means definitely will," at a rate of $4.00 (which is acceptable, but it should not be listed as "may apply"). While Hoshi is a decent restaurant, there is too much deception in their menu. So far; tempura, nigiri zushi platter, and delivery charge have stuck out.

One thing that I did appreciate was that they threw in a piece of Tuna belly Toro in their nigiri zushi platter. But you can bet it tasted nothing like toro.

The food was absolutly amazing, we each had a beer, and the entire order (listed above) and the total bill was 42.00!!! service was great, they were really friendly! it was quiet and we got a private table with a divider around it so we had complete privacy! the only problem with that was it was a little more difficult to get the waiter's attention but that wasn't their fault! We really loved the food and will definatly be going back!!!!!

When I want Sushi and Sashimi, this is where I go. I love this place. I always order the Ōsaka Sushi Dinner here. I know that sounds like I don't get very much variety but the chef generally mixes up what you get so it's different most times. The food is umami (savoury, delicious) and well laid out.

The staff are very polite and respectful, as I generally find Japanese people to be. They do their jobs and do them well.

If you want Sushi, Sashimi, etc., this is the place to go.

Hoshi was relatively quiet for a Saturday evening. The table was quite small for 5 people but didn't detract from the experience. The waiter was extended but did as well as he could with the number of tables he was serving. We've eaten sushi dozens of times now and Hoshi compares well to the better places we've eaten at over a number of years. The prices were reasonable, portions were generous and ingredients were fresh. We'll be back!

Our favourite restaurant in Peterborough! Excellent food at very reasonable prices (especially lunch!). Friendly staff and attentive service. We eat there a lot and have never had a bad meal.

Very lovely setting, I am not a seasoned consumer of japanese food, but I thought it was excelltent.
The meals are very large, and served in attractive dishes.
It was strange receiving two salads.
Service very friendly.

We are frequent sushi consumers, and the both of us have tried it in all different places. The sushi rolls were by far the best I've tasted. We are going back and we will be telling friends!
