I'm visiting Ottawa from Toronto and have eaten at at least a dozen Thai restaurants, and this one rates right up there. It doesn't beat out my two favourites (Salad King and Satay on the Road in Toronto if you're there), but the panang curry was delicious. Panang curry is my favourite thing on the menu at Salad King and while this was quite a different take it didn't disappoint. In fact, I think I'm going to go to Royal Thai again before I leave Ottawa. Cold rolls were all right. Slightly subpar and falling apart, but pretty tasty nonetheless.
- Order: Panang curry, cold rolls
- Still good after many years.

My friend and I had not been to Royal Thai for a couple of years. There are so many new Thai restaurants that have opened up lately that we wondered if it would still be doing well. There was a steady stream of patrons entering the restaurant and the place seemed full to capacity. We were pleased to find the food was still very good. I found each dish had just the right amount of spice. The only problem was that it took a very long time for them to deliver the check to us. Otherwise, we enjoyed it very much.

We've been going to Royal Thai for years. Its well above average for Ottawa. Their curry dishes are excellent but their Pad Thai is dry and boring. This is standard Thai fare and they do a very good job of consistent quality. Order their yellow curry and pa nang (red curry). Both are rich, spicy and filling. Service is very fast but sometimes gruff. We usually do take-out now.

Service was horrible. Middle-aged woman server was extremely RUDE. I asked to have my dish extra spicy, and she laughed and me. When the dish arrived it looked like she had poured a jar of dried hot peppers in my soup!! Don't remember how good/bad the food tasted. I DO remember the awful service and will never return.

Tommy the waiter is AMAZING! Best pad thai in the city ... but you have to try the chicken panang... chicken with peanut and coconut milk sauce I recommend the "Sticky rice" not the jasmine rice with this one.
Ill always keeping going back to Royal THai as long as Tommy and the Pad Thai dish is there.

The most authentic Thai food I have eaten....just as good as Thailand. Pad Thai and yellow curry are great. Stir Fried morning glory is a very close second. Service is good...staff constantly comes over to refill water. Food is at the table within about 15 min from ordering.

My boyfriend and I were visiting from lower New York state. I chose Royal Thai because it was right down the street and received pretty good reviews.
We started with fried tofu, which came out in small, roundish pieces with diluted peanut sauce. I like the peanut sauce a bit thicker, but the tofu was so hot that it was excellent regardless. It was literally right out of the fryer and all gooey inside. It was excellent. Some of the best fried tofu I've ever had, although I would've liked it cut a bit bigger and more rigidly.
He had a sweet and sour chicken soup, and I had tom kha gai. The soup was incredible. It was rather spicy and thick, with a lot of coconut milk, perfectly sliced chicken and a lot of mushrooms. They served it in a tiny bowl, but it was worth it, simply because of the quality.
For entrees, he ordered the red jungle curry with pork and I the pad thai. His curry looked, smelled and tasted excellent. It was spicy and had a lot of color, and was really well-absorbed by the white rice. There was plenty of sauce and big pieces of chicken.
My pad thai was rather good, but there was too much sauce and especially way too much fish sauce. Fish sauce is supposed to be used as a very subtle accent, not an actual flavor, and when I ate the leftovers the next day, I could really taste the anchovies. It was unpleasant to say the least. Otherwise, the pad Thai was very good -- this is one of the few Thai places I have been to that does not offer chicken and shrimp, but makes you choose between. I chose chicken and it was pretty good.
The service was excellent and the inside of the restaurant was very nice. For dessert, we had coconut ice cream, which was (the only thing they had, and) very, very good. Our waiter was incredibly accommodating, and I think dinner ended up being around $55 (before tip) for the two of us and no alcohol.

Just happened upon this restaurant and what a find. We will now go there often. The food was amazing; the service quick and efficient. Just going into the place and smelling the food was a treat. The best I have ever eaten. A real taste extravaganza!! Loved it!!!
