  • The food has been decent in the past when it was in the red building across the street. When they moved to the upstairs corner of Somerset, it changed owners a few times.

The restaurant doesn't have good "feng shui". Not being too philosophical, it's not lit enough and it seems dirty to the naked eye.

The one dish that stuck out was the fried fish - it was stale. The owner came out and decided to have an arguing match with my mother over how she is incompetent, and how she didn't even tried the fish (which all seven of us did). He then stood there and waited for us to finish so we can leave.

On top of that, we found hairs in our food.

I thought it couldn't get any worse. Until I found this:
    bit(dot)ly/pvvZ6L
(look for Chu Sing's Ottawa Food Inspection Reports.)

In response to the reviewer's comment on how the manager said that the kitchen is "poorly lit", that is a major food safety infraction.

  • The dining room is huge, by far the largest in Chinatown. The food is spotty at best (Have had to return food more than once because it tasted spoiled or cooked improperly). The service is prompt, especially if you are a recognized regular. The atmosphere is lacking, although when it's full (on dim sum weekends) it does have a warm buzz. They should do something about the ground floor lobby, which is uninviting and has a foul odor. The prices are decent, surprising for a restaurant this size. There's a half size (Chinese tapas) menu for dinner and a fixed special that are very reasonable (Applause - they recently hired a new chef and updated their menu offerings). But, overall, this once grand institution looks tired and could use an extreme makeover from top to bottom.

  • Order: Diced bay scallops with cashew & vegetables, crispy chicken, beef & chinese vegetable fried noodle.

  • I've been to this restaurant many times. I usually go wiht a big group of friends for dim sum or night snack. I love going there as the foods cheap and you get a great variety. EVeryone is full for about $11 tax and tip in. The variety and food quality is pretty good although the service is mediocre. For a restaurant that is busy i thought the service was good but for a restaurant that is not fully booked the service is just adequate. You can't ask too much I would say, it's not as if my tea pot is ever empty or my table is not filled with food within 30minutes. i'm happy to wait 30minutes as it is a restaurant and not a fast food restaurant. I've heard others say racist comments about this restaurant which is startling as for a group of chinese staff they are quite friendly to my group of caucasian friends and the one chinese me.

    WOuld i go again? definitely!

  • Order: bbq duck, sui mai, har gow, chicken feet, rice hot pot, sticky rice, dumplings, spring rolls, almond jello, egg tarts (THE BEST)

  • Slow and abrupt service. Not crowded at all, but understaffed and did not treat patrons equally. We waited about 50 minutes before our three dishes - nothing in the least bit complicated - arrived. The galling thing was that four tables of people who arrived after us received their food well before us - with one table of six having a full meal in front of them within five minutes of arrival. The only thing which seemed to distinguish us from the other four tables of people was that we were not Chinese. We were treated in a very second-class way. Evidently, they do not want non-Chinese guests. This sort of obvious prejudice is disgusting!

  • Order: chicken in black bean sauce, hot beef dish, steamed rice.

  • We as a family of 10, went to this restaurant for lunch on Sunday afternoon,
We spent at least $80.00 on food alone, this wasn't our 1st visit, we have coming to this restaurant many times, but on this day , the service was very unbearable.
As my wife went to pay the bill, She was told by the cashier, that we need "HAVE" to pay 10% tip, my wife told her that we normally pay but we never were told that we MUST pay, the cashier got very upset, and complain ed to her uneducated supervisor, that came to our table and was challenging my wife on words, Saying that we MUST pay, and she gave racist comment that you Indians are messy, and look what we have to got through, She was very rude, and she was demanding, and said if you can pay, don't comeback here anymore.
My advice to any one visiting the restaurant ,pls there are many better Chinese Restaurant out there than this worthless ,Worst Service, Rude and Racist Restaurant in Ottawa.

  • I came in with a girlfriend and it was quite good. We ordered off of a 'snack' menu that I heard of and it was quite cheap about 4 - 6 dollars a plate that you share.
It came quite quickly too. I will have to try the dimsum sometime.

  • I have been going to this place for years for dim sum, but lately the food has taken a turn for the worst. The last couple of times I was really dissapointed with the quality of the food, I mean everything I ate was just bad, seafood isn't fresh, chewy, the meat are completely tasteless. Since then I have found MUCH better places, I won't make any publicity for them here, but just check out reviews for other chinese restaurants. Now that I have found good quality dim sum, I will never go back to Chu Sing.

  • If you like bugs in your food this is the place to go.
My girlfriend and I were good regular customers of this restaurant. We shall not be returning. We were served a dish
with two large steamed bugs in it. We asked to see the manager who told us it was dark in the kitchen and the chef did not see them. She acted as if it was perfectly normal and offered us ten percent off the bill.
I will never eat there again!

  • We used to go to Chu Shing fairly regularly as they have tasty general tao chicken and other dishes. However one evening we ordered and the bak choy came out first as usual and after a few bites into it we found what looked like a caterpillar cooked in with the bak choy. We spoke with the restaurant manager and their only response was that it happens sometimes because bugs get into the vegetables. They did not seem to care in the least and took the dish back and brought out a new one. Needless to say, I wasn't interested in eating at that ponit.

  • Order: Baby bok choy, general tao chicken, pan fried noodles, chinese brocoli, beef in black pepper sauce.
