  • We used a Groupon coupon which I gave to our waiter when we arrived. We were seated and ordered drinks to start. The Groupon menu was limited to 3 items which was fine. I ordered coconut shrimp to start (12.95). The shrimp came very dried out looking and on a bed of wilted lettuce. They were definatley not fresh and I'm positive they came from the supermarket frozen food section. There was no hint of coconut and they were tiny shrimp with lots of dried out batter. I couldn't eat them and my waiter took they away with no question as to why i didn't eat them. There was a small garden salad served with grocery store bought blue cheese dressing with no hint of blue cheese however it was OK. Then the prime rib I ordered came. it was a generous portion and looked the way I ordered it, medium rare. I tried cutting into it with a steak knife. I thought maybe the knife was dull so I asked the waiter for a sharper knife. Unfortunately, that didn't help much. My first bite was extremely chewy to the point I couldn't swallow it and had to spit it out on my side plate. I tried to cut another bite size piece off the side and it was a bit better but it was cold in the middle so obviously had been re-heated. When the waiter came for my plate, he asked if I'd like to take the large portion of meat I didn't eat with me. I said no thanks and to his credit, he did ask why. They apologized and returned the Groupon coupon to me and asked me if I would please come again and re-use the coupon. When the bill came, it was wrong and we asked them to remove the wine we hadn''t ordered. It's very unlikely we'll go back to use the Groupon coupon but if we do, I'll update this review if the experience is any better.

  • We normally don't expect too much when cashing in on WagJag's, coupons or other deals, but our dining experience at what seems to be a newly overhauled Stav's was a really nice surprize for my hubby and I on a Thursday evening this fall. We feared the worst but were pleasantly surprized. They were kind and didn't seem to flinch when we presented the dreaded coupon. Perhaps by now they are all on board as they owe that form of marketing for our business as this was our first visit.

The food was great, they really worked hard to be charming but also give us our much needed privacy. We attempted a sorta bargain, semi-romantic night out with our newborn and got just that. The staff and owners were crazy about our little one and made us feel special as they paraded her around the restaurant.

We typically find that we just avoid the steakhouses these days assuming we'll always find a tab of about $60 - 80, but we noticed a great special on a 3-coarse prime rib for I think it was $16 -17. Ours was wonderful and we higly recommend if you like to take your time witih your meal to fully digest and enjoy.

Great people, yummy food and we'll definitely be back to take advantage of their promotion. I appreciate that they are doing their best to stay afloat and I feel great promoting and supporting them as a solid local business that appreciates your patronage.

  • Have to agree with the previous review about secondary treatment with a Wag Jag coupon.

Have used Wag Jag for at least five restaurants, air conditioner service, hair cuts etc and received great service and meals.

Not here however. Same back room seating and small meal.

Only good thing from this experience is we didn't pay full price.

Wag Jag works in the sense you can try the place and see if you would return. We will not be back.

Guess we now know why the name change at this so called restaurant.

  • We purchased a coupon from WagJag to try this restaurant and were very disappointed.
Signs all over the place asking you to let them know right away if you were using a WagJag coupon, which we did. So we were put all on our own in a separate dining room, our table was fine, but the rest of the tables were all attached - so if it was busy it would be like eating in a cafeteria. We were the only people in our dining room the entire time, regular patrons were seated in the brighter dining room with regular table settings.
Garlic bread was great, but their pickle platter was a plate of dill pickle segments. May as well have brought the jar to the table.
Salads were a plate of greens with 1 tomato wedge, and a very thick, brown dressing - not very appealing, but the dressing did taste good.
I had the veal and my husband had the steak, both meals were ok - not great, but they sure weren't worth the price on the menu I saw online.
Really dissappointed with dessert. Had looked at the menu before purchasing the wagjag, and they had a nice selection of desserts. Turns out you had no choice, and were given cherry cheesecake unless you were willing to spend another $4.95 to upgrade. As the waiter came to the table he made an obvious switch of the two plates, and when he sat them down we discovered he gave my husband the bigger piece (which was still pretty small), mine was a little tiny corner piece about the size of those mini-Mars bars you get at Halloween. In the end I didn't care about getting the smaller piece because it was very artificial tasting, not very good at all.
We ordered drinks before dinner, but were never asked if we wanted wine with dinner. We normally would have purchased a bottle of wine, but by that time I think we realized we were being treated like second class diners and saved our money.

Have used WagJag at other restaurants and never experienced this kind of treatment. Really couldn't wait to get out of Stavs and definitely won't go back.

  • Great changes in direction and attitude,as well as overall ambiance!Food was great and service, impecable.Stavs offers you high end food and service, without the expensive pricing and pretentiousness, you'd expect for fine dining. It still has that "family restaraunt" feel which is important for Oshawa. We're hooked.
