  • I've been going to Rainbow for around seven years now, and it's still gotta be one of my favourite diners. It's been around for almost 54 years, and it's still serving' up food to the hungry patrons.

The other day, me an my buddy Josh are planning on getting a burger. You know how it is, a long day, you wanna relax with a nice meal. So we decide to take the walk to Rainbow for a bite to eat. Now, Josh has only been around Oshawa for a couple months now, and hasn't been to Rainbow more that three or so times, so this was all new to him. We walk in and take a seat at one of the corner tables. Wall to wall, are old photos of different TV shows, music legends, and the business itself. The menu, which has recently been jazzed up with a bit of colour, is filled with the favourites you know and love. We had already settled on getting a burger each, so we look down to the little section called "Burgers". We decided on both of us getting the same kind: some sort of "supreme" burger. We order a plate of fries to share, as well. So the food comes after about 10 minutes, and I was taken aback. I had never had a burger at Rainbow, and it was a sight to see. Crisp, juicy beef, with glistening, melted cheese over top. I was on the verge of drooling. We devoured the sandwiches, and were very pleased with the experience. It all came up to about $21.00 and some change, but it was all worth it.

Rainbow, you've done a fine job. Buon cibo, buon vino e buoni amici. Avere un buon pasto.

  • Order: Two supreme burgers, and a plate of fries. Simply delicious.

  • Our kids BEG us to go here. We have been many times and have always enjoyed the food. We have had many different items from the menu. The chicken fingers and fries are an all time fav. The GMC breakfast is unbeatable for taste and value. The portions are always VERY generous even in the kids meals. The staff is very friendly. The only drawback that I could mention is that the place is small and some might say dated. But it is what it is! A small diner in downtown Oshawa. The location and size doesn't stop us from going or enjoying our meals.

  • My husband read other reviews praising this place so we decided to try it. It was extremely disappointing. My husband ordered the peameal and eggs, I ordered the chicken ceasar wrap, and I ordered the chicken fingers, onion rings and fries for my son. My husbands meal looked like a pigs trough! He had 1 good piece of peameal and a couple of other 'scraps' (burned on one side). The eggs weren't bad and the homefries were storebought and flavourless. The chicken fingers and onion rings were also store bought but decent. My wrap looked promising with a lovely tortilla and crisp lettuce. I took one bite and disaster! Yes it was fresh athe dressing was good, even the chicken was pretty good (not much of it though) but the kicker was the fact they had the gall to add fake bacon bits! Really?! This place serves bacon all day and decides to add fake bits in the wrap!! Embarassing and disgusting! Especially for the $9 something price tag (considering you don't get any sides with it). The the french fries- which I wouldn't even call them that- was like a plate of bits that they scraped off the bottom of the pan! Greasy little bits for an extra $2.50! The servers were nice enough and the ambience was what is expected for a diner but definately the worst food we've had for some time. We would never go back.

  • Order: Peameal and eggs, chicken fingers and fries and onion rings, chicken ceasar wrap

  • I am a regular customer at the Rainbow for many years now and the food is made by real people. Not the conveyor belt type food that comes out of a lot of places these days. I love seeing a place that doesn't get complacent. The new menu they have put out puts fast food to shame. If you are on a diet, don't bother going but if you love to eat check out the OBSCENE food section on the menu.

  • Order: the FAT LOUIE. 16oz. burger topped with peanut butter, 4 sunny eggs and 4 strips of bacon on a huge bun

  • Menu was just recently updated with additional meals added. Having travelled extensively throughout North America, visiting independent restaurants, The Rainbow rates right in there with the best of them. Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives show comes to mind! I've been dining here since 1975 and have always met pleasant staff and had a great meal. Good value for your money!

  • Early last Friday evening my wife and I stopped by for a meal. For a place that promotes "fresh" I'm thinking they should check the definition. The onion rigs were "hard" and the waitress confirmed our suspicion... FROZEN. Fish special... frozen. The fries looked hand cut but were not very fresh tasting. All this plus one of the "hefty" cooks spent a lot of time showing off and flirting with the new waitress.

  • Order: fish special & roast beef hoagie

  • The review below was the reason I tried the Rainbow. The food was good, great value, and great service. I will definitely go back, however based on the breakfast I had and a scan of their full menu, I wouldn't say this is the kind of place you would see on a food show.

The menu was basic diner fare, with no really distinguishing signature dishes to speak of, and there was no evidence that the food was made from scratch to qualify it as being TV-worthy (example: the baked beans were most certainly canned).

Make no mistake, this place is worth visiting, but I wouldn't expect Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives to be shooting there any time soon.

  • Order: Sausage omellette, homefries, toast, coffee, beans

  • This is that type of place that you would see on one of those food shows on TV that discovers these hidden gems around the world. Great food, fast service, no BS, and very reasonable prices. Actually the prices are a bit unreal for the portion sizes. Don't misunderstand me, this ain't the Ritz, but it's clean and it good.

  • Order: 2 Peameal bacon on a bun and 2 chocolate shakes TOTAL $15

Good, but don't expect TV-show kind of diner food. Full review above.

  • A no nonsense place in this franchise-ridden world. Nice to know its there when I'm really hungry and don't want to have to get a second mortgage to go out to eat.

  • Order: I had a Roman Omelette (5 egger stuffed with meatsauce, sausage and cheese) and my wife had Steak and Eggs (12 oz. steak for $9.99---like where are you going to find that anywhere!). Thed combination of the food, service and the time-warp atmosphere keeps me coming back! The problem with this place is to many people know about it now and there's a line up most times on the week-ends.

  • I was in need of a burger, a large burger at that, and i was short on cash, and out of the corner of my eye I see The Rainbow Resteraunt, I'd never eaten there before, I walk in and the friendly waitress instantly gets down to taking my order, so I ordered the peameal banquet burger, the service was rather quick, now on to the burger, now for the roughly 6$ price I was expecting some small run of the mill burger with tiny pieces of bacon, but boy was I wrong, the burger was HUGE!!! and the bacon was THICK, it was cooked to perfection, tasted great, and i was completely full afterwards, I am going to recommend eating here to everyone I know

  • Order: Peameal banquet burger
