  • the food was bad with no choice at all
the cashier and waitress were forcing us to take a combo and making remarks we wre too slow to choose. we paid 15$ for a sandwich, a drink, a very bad salad on a cardboard plate with plastic forks no knifes. awful will never come back

la nourriture était sans gout, il n'y avait pas de choix.
le personnel et le caissier étaient impolis. 15$ plus taxes pour un mauvais trio dans des assiettes en carton. Terrible, nous ne reviendrons jamais.

  • I wasn't pleased with the service, food or cost.

The service was really slow and grumpy and there were only a couple other people in line ahead. I ordered a platter, they do not include hummus in the platter, there is an extra cost ($). They were not generous at all with any of the toppings, I ordered and paid for extra garlic sauce (which is okay but not the greatest, despite the name) and there was little difference between my order and my partner's dish that did not order extra garlic sauce.

The pieces of pita bread are pre-cut!? How can you make a shawarma with pre-cut bread? I think the pre-cut pita pieces totaled to only one regular sized pita, definitely not enough bread for a platter. The pita was served in a dinky little cookie pastry bag that ended up getting dried out.

For the cost, it was not worth it, there are so many other places in Ottawa to choose from, I won't be going back.

The only great thing about the meal was the tabbouleh- it was fantastic.

  • I went with a friend who was raving about this place, saying it was the best in Ottawa, etc. and I thought it was VERY overrated. The place is kinda strange, doesn't seem all that clean, and the owner just hanging around and coming to talk to you while you are eating is the most annoying thing ever. When I ordered, they seemed a bit confused, and kept trying to sell me a drink when I said like three times that I didn't want one.

Their shwarma is also more expensive than other places and nothing special.

  • First of all I know Donair's. Ever since Ottawa's first Donair outlet (Tony's Donair next to BarryMores on Bank St circa). I have to admit that I'm still hung on the taste of Tony's and have yet to find any better.

As for my first taste at The Garlic King on Montreal Road @ Blair, I first heard from King Adel Azziz before I even walked in he says to me "It will be even better next month". I had no idea what he was talking about even I didn't even give a hoot. He then went on to talk about all the local charities he supports before even ordering my food order.

I would have preferred a nice hello and welcome to my restaurant just to make it fell homie and that the owner was in watching over me. I knew that King Adel is a sales oriented guy from seeing his promos so I kinda let it brush by.

As for the experience, well the place is clean but a bit cluttered and is very much non-descript. 8 or 10 small tables , 1 cash to place your order and 2 food prep areas setup like Subway. The food prep area was clean but the sauces and dips need labeling,

I'm not Lebanese and have no idea what 60% of the food condiments are. I don't want to have to ask for a translation! The creamy dips and sauces for the most part had a skin on them or parts of them making it look rather distasteful. So I skipped on those ones.

What I ordered was the Donair special (small Donair of choice side salad and 1 drink) for $6.75 incl Tax.

The beef donair was average (Beef, Lettuce, Onions, Tomatoes, Pickle, Garlic Spread and Tahini sauce), but it was easy to eat and did not drip all over the place.

My salad was the Tabouleh. The Tabouleh was excellent! Very fresh and tasty and quite cold. I felt replenished when I finished eating.

I'll go back cause I like eating healthy Tabouleh and the price was good. The food was fresh and it makes a bif difference for us Foodies.

He's going to make the entrance more accessible and adding a Bar next door for an expansion.

King Adel needs to ease up on the schmooozing and just ask how the food is and maybe add a comment box.

  • Free sample plate on the first visit and after not being in for 6 months they remembered my usual order. My favorite is the beef steak shawarma. I've never been disappointed.

I enjoy the jokes and banter - I grew up with a similar style of humour at home.

They've changed locations, moving out of Orleans to a location near the NRC Campus at Blair and Montreal Rds. The new spot is ..... well, new. It hasn't accumulated the letters of thanks from various organisations and none of 'The Garlic King's' awards are up on the walls. Missing too are the photos from fans around the world. That's why atmosphere takes a hit.

  • The food is great! But I can't stand the cashier. His jokes are never funny, most of the time he is just really awkward. Like when he asks you how you are and replies with "I'm fat". I notice other customers pretending like they don't hear him lol! Every time I pay cash he 'jokes' that it is counterfeit, which it isn't. Makes for an embarrassing experience. If it wasn't for him, I would go more often.

  • The food is OK, but nothing great. It is also overpriced. Highly overrated. The only reason why this place is given such high reviews is because the middle aged yuppies in Orleans, who don't really know what Shawarma is give it really high reviews.

To the Orleans yuppies, go to a REAL Shawarma place downtown, ie, Shawarma City, Palace, etc., and see what real Shawarma is.

  • Totally overated, I don't know why it's the most famous shawarma place in the city, o ya probably because of the guy driving around in his van yelling. The food is decent, not overly good. The service is good though. The short guy is funny, but gets annoying.

  • Everytime I'm craving for lebanese food, there is only one place that comes to mind and that is the Garlic King's Place. Defitnetly the best garlic ever, the Fatoush is to die for! My hubby and I always enjoy Mr. Azzi's service, and yes his jokes. Which I must add, for people that dont have a sense of humour will deffitnetly will not get the joke lol. I rate the food an overall 10! We always get extra more than what we ask for with no extra cost, the jokes are free and the smiles are free, once in a while even the baklawas are free.....ummmmm
Yes, Adel, you can do anything! I recommend this garlic heaven 100%
