Shandra's Restaurant

After reading reviews on this site, I decided to get takeout. I tend to judge Trini restaurants based on their rotis, so that's what I got.

(Decided to get chicken 'cause the last time I got beef from Calabash, I thought the meat was a bit tough. Roti was dry. Previous times, it was good. Overall, I still like Calabash, but maybe I'll stick to chicken next time.)

Prices were on par with other roti places. I was surprised that the rice dishes (included coleslaw) were in/'round the same price as the rotis!

It's probably a better deal to get the rice dishes because it includes rice & peas, some kinda meat (jerk chicken, curry, etc.), & coleslaw. However, I don't know how big these dishes are.

Anyway, the roti was DELICIOUS! The roti was soft, not dry. (I don't believe it was dal puri-style 'cause they tend to be dry.) The curry chicken was even better, good flavour, chicken was tender, & so were the potatoes.

I would definitely go back again, maybe try something else to get a better feel of the place!

On my way home from another restaurant I saw Shandra's Roti Shop and decided to give it a try whenever my husband and I were in the mood for some roti - which happens quite regularly. Less than 3 days later we found ourselves in Shandra's.

We walked in and instantly felt like we could have been at a roti shop in Trinidad (the weather was wonderful that day, which definitely helped)! We walked up to the counter and waited for about 15 seconds before a lady, I presume it was Shandra herself came out to take our order. This style of restaurant, like so many Caribbean ones, has customers order and pay at the counter and then sit down at a table if you are eating in. Apparently very few people do that at Shandra's - 6 other people came in and ordered their meals to go.

Our meals were excellent. Absolutely spot on in flavour in terms of the roti filling, and the dinner, which came with rice and peas and some Caribbean-style salad/cole slaw. We will definitely be going back!

In terms of comparison, I would say that Shandra's is better than Calabash, which has received countless stellar ratings on Restaurantica. I thought Calabash was good, but Shandra's is better. The size and price of the roti's were about the same, but Shandra's is more comfortable, better tasting and, in this Trini-Jamaican's opinion, more authentic.

The best roti in town! They should have a bigger place!

Excellent food, oxtail was tender.
