Have been going to Toronto for something like 5 years and usually eat here at least twice a trip. Food is very reasonable considering comparables, i.e. a famous hot dog place that also does corned beef/pastrami and where a lunch of a sandwich, very small (albeit yummy) potato salad and a large drink cost over $20 w/tax/tip.
We go here, have my sandwich and drink, my girl has a pizza or a whatever and a Caesar. That usually runs $31-33 with tax/tip. When ordering from the delightful desert stand, it pushes your bill a considerable amount but is well worth the price!
We have always found the staff extremely friendly and service to be excellent, even when the restaurant is incredibly busy. - Order: Pastrami Sandwich/Diet Drink/Chocolate Mousse Torte.

We sat down and the waitress did not even acknowledge our existence. She began to serve tables that came after us. We waited for ten minutes and we're not even given a menu and when we asked for a high chair she acted as though as though it was a huge inconvenience. We left shortly after. I don't care how good the food is, I will never come back to try it. I read a review below about disgruntled staff, and it was dead on.
- Order: didnt even get a menu

I've been dying for some corned beef or pastrami for ages and after a couple of years of waiting I finally tried this place out. Ben's Deli in Montreal it most certainly is not
Okay, so the average you spend on a lunch nowadays is 8 bucks. My bill from this place comes out to $16.05.
For $11.95 (!) I ordered this "spicy" corn beef sandwich that came with some pale spongy French Fries, a small bowl of cole slaw that wasn't bad, and half a real salty pickle. The corn beef wasn't that tasty, and very inconsistent in thickness - some slices were paper thin whereas others were a quarter of an inch thick and my jaws still hurt from chewing it. One piece of corned beef was nice and sickly grey and in this heat I wasn't going to risk eating it. Spicy the corned beef was not, not even after half a little jar of really spicy mustard. They're not cheap on portions, I have to give 'em credit, the sandwich was stacked with corned beef at least 3 inches high.
I ordered a soft drink, thinkin' that for $11.95 for a lunch it would be included? Stupid me. That tiny glass of root beer which was half ice any way? $2.25!! Next time, which won't happen, I'll order a beer.
So we're at $14.20. Add the HST at $1.95 and here we are at $16.05 for a lunch. O-U-C-H!
Normally I give positive revues, I hate cutting up restaurants as people work there and are trying to make a living. The only thing going for this place are very friendly staff making you feel at home or at your aunt's place for lunch. Many customers are on first-name basis with the staff so you can tell they do have repeat customers. Many customers are very cute elderly people being taken for lunch by their middle-age kids. It's nice to see.
I'm sorry. This was just a rip-off. There's a recession goin' on and 16 bucks for corned beef sandwich and a couple of cheap fixins' is just high way robbery! - Order: "Spicy" Corned Beef Sandwich with fries, coleslaw and a root beer

I have eaten at this location a few times. The food at this restaurant is decent and the portions are generous. However, if you are looking for a good place to dine, or friendly service, keep looking. The entire wait staff is as disgruntled as postal workers. They NEVER smile and seemed annoyed that you are there. It is too bad that the management does not see this and take action to rectify this. My wife and I tested this one night by giving a $25 tip on a $32 bill. The server acted as though we did not leave a tip at all. If they hate their jobs so much, FIND A NEW ONE!
The food is the reason I return. Certain dishes are very good. The smoked meat is delicious and the chicken souvlaki platter is as good as you will find. However, we now will only order take-out and even still, the staff manages to let their rude and sullen attitude shine through in the 30-60 seconds you are in the place. - Order: Chicken Caesar Salad, Greek Souvlaki Platter, Montreal-Style Lasagne

This review is inconsistent with our experiences. But, we always eat here at night and the regular male server while business-like is friendly enough for us. The food is a good value.

The corned beef sandwich tasted ok, but the meat was extremely oily and greasy...not something I'll ever order again. I also missed the typical included pickle...must be cutting back on costs!?!. The fries were thick and decent. The biggest obstacle is that there is no 'take-out area' and a very clogged-up entrance was caused as entering people piled up against eachother. It would benefit if a separate window, counter or entrance was devoted to take-out only. I've eaten in as a diner, and recall that the food was really good, but the waitresses all seem to trip over eachother....too many in a cramped restaurant.

Since 1975 for quick and casual dining this has been Mississauga's most dependable and consistent restaurant we've ever discovered. We try others, but keep coming back here. Since our last visit they have added a large deck and rejuvenated the interior.
I usually have one of their very satisfying Montreal Smoked Meat Sandwiches which comes in 2 sizes, the regular (large) and Super (colossal). The meat seems to have lost some of it's spiciness over the years and it is now machine sliced instead of by hand in the old Montreal tradition. However, it is still a superior product and evokes nostalgic feelings that only former Montrealers will understand.
My usual side dishes are equally satisfying. From the golden-crisp steak-cut fries with a creamy soft interior, to the sour kosher dills and the always-fresh, crisp and spicy Cole Slaw. All seldom as good anywhere else.
Service here is quick and business-like, thankfully without those overly cheery greetings, introductions, canned spiels and annoying congratulations on being able to place an order usually encountered in the local chain restaurants.

My husband and I observed (June 2/08) a waitress sneeze into her hand, and immediately proceed to pick up 2 plates of food at the 'kitchen station'. Our table wasn't clean nor was one of our water glasses. The fries were obviously not from fresh potatoes (frozen and dry), but the corn beef and Western sandwich were excellent. Some waitresses friendlier than others, and some appeared dishevelled/untidy.
