  • Bad raters are probably from opposing companies. This place is the greatest sushi AYCE that i've ever been to. I've been to 4-5 different places, and the food there is nothing compared to the stuff we get at syogun. My family went to Syogun at around 7:30 PM on a sunday night. It was incredibly busy, and the chefs were working hard to get the orders out. Three servers managed the place very well, considering it could seat quite a few people (including those hard to get into traditional flooring areas). We started off with some salmon/beef sashimi. It was fresher than even the non AYCE places. Next we ordered some of the house rolls and they were fabulous. After that, we had more sashimi, along with tempura and several of the teppanaki dishes, all delicious. Ended off with several helpings of green tea ice cream. Delicious!
We go almost every other week, since its so good!

  • We went on a Friday early evening, around 5-6 PM, so service should not have been -too- slow. But it was. The food did not make up for its slowness. The tempura was average, some of the sushi still had WARM RICE (ugh), the filling in the gyoza was bland and I suspect it was cooked from frozen, and the garlic beef teppanyaki was overcooked. They charged a 10% gratuities fee (post-tax) on top of our bill...even though this is being done at most restaurants, I was not too pleased about this because I prefer to express my thoughts about the establishment with the amount of tip I choose to leave.

The only great thing about the experience was that my party had a nice room with a sliding door and traditional seating.

Overall, terrible food, slow service. Will not return to.

  • This is the second time visiting Syogun after reading about these amazing reviews online. I'd like to note that it is very interesting that the reviews raved about their oh-so-average tempura and that those that did would set the price range to be $11-25. The buffet is about $20.00 depending on when you're going, and if you order drinks (alcoholic) and/or opt for the Uni sushi/abalone that's extra as well. With the compulsory service charge as well as tax, even if you don't opt with the upgrades, $26.00 would definitely be a better reflection of cost.

The first time we dropped by that place, during dinner time it was quite packed. The host was dealing with another customer, so I patiently waited for him to be done with. When he was done I told him my request, but at the same time another customer was asking a question at the same time (on the other side of the host stand), he did not handle it graciously as he kept swinging his head both ways repeatedly asking "Yes? Yes? Yes?" As though we're unreasonable people expecting him to answer both our request at the same time. It was merely a coincident that we started at the same time.

Today, we decided to give this place another chance. The place was about 70% full, there were approximately three waiters for a restaurant of 80-100 people. We waited for over 10 minutes at the door, and there were several tables that was set up and ready, I asked if we could take a seat ourselves. The manager as well as the waiter asked us to wait (having verbal recognition of our existence). Eventually, we were seated and after a good 15 minutes before we were able to place our first order (which was us writing the order down on a piece of paper).

The arrival of food was very, very slow, only most of our food arrived and the rest was lost somewhere. We weren't sure if we should order more or wait for it to come, and we asked the manager to follow up on it, but it didn't do any good. There is a sitting limit of 90 minutes... and by the time 90 minutes rolled around, a lot of the food didn't arrived. We didn't even bother to ask for it.

The maki rolls were terrible, rice were thick on one side and thin on the other, the end pieces were not very visually appealing. The fresh scallop wasn't very fresh, the grilled scallop was frozen (reused clam shell for the baking) with an icky layer of what I think was supposed to be garlic butter.

  • Order: sushi, sashimi, maki rolls, skewered, miso soup, ice cream

  • After reading the rave reviews here, I decided to go check out Syogun Japanese Cuisine in the end of October '08 and my immediate conclusion is that this place is way over-rated by far by the other fellow reviewers.

The food was ok, comparable to most other All You Can Eat places in Markham (except Wasabi, which is perhaps the worst), as well as the price, which is pretty similar to every other establihsment .

What ticked me off with this semi-bad review was that there was a really strange smell when I walked into the place, and it wasn't really the smell of food. It smelled like a stint of industrial chemical mixed with some really stale water.... it is sort of like the smell where someone has been using some really really old towel to clean the tables. That was a complete turnoff throughout the meal.

  • Order: maki rolls, nigiri sushi, sushi pizza and more

  • my family and i had been looking for the best jap ayce to feast on and i think we've found it. we've been eating at syogun every two weeks for the past 2 months! thats how much we like the food!

to be fair, we've always gone saturday 11 am for lunch so its not packed, i.e. we get good service, food comes on time, never had a missed order and did i say the house rolls are awesome?

i think they rotate the sushi chefs as there's one guy who takes the time to make the sushi's and the rolls look quite artistic and appetizing and one who just slaps the ingredients together lol.

we used to go to wasabi as it was the closest to our house but the service there is just really terrible; we've also been to sushi on 7 and maison du japon and quite frankly, syogun beats the crap out of these other japanese ayce.

i think its the highest rated japanese ayce in the markham area on restaurantica : ) (this is how we found out about it, btw so thank you restaurantica!)

we'll go for dinner one of these days and i'm expecting no less from my favorite jap ayce place!!!

  • Order: spider roll, dragon roll, mussells with house sauce, tempura, too many to mention

  • This place is pretty good for an all you can eat Japanese food.I will have to suggest you guys who is planning to visit this restaurant!! The main reason I chose this restaurant is the grilled scallop item and 10 kind of fresh sashimi, also over 200 different items for all you can eat. That is very good for my party. One of the best kitchen menus with many great dishes. I appreciate the private room for party.

  • Order: salmon ,squid, white tuna, saba sashimi, shrimp tempura, grilled scallop, grilled beef ribs, salmon terriyaki, cheese fish tempura and a lot of itmes

  • Well, I don't usually write review, but for one time, I will have to warn you guys who is planning to visit this restaurant!! The main reason I chose this rest is the UNI option, but they said they will not offer UNI on sushi but on hand roll or regular roll...ok, so we orderd the hand roll, and honestly, have you guys seen UNIon hand roll?? is like a stick in the hand roll? It also doesnt taste fresh.....sigh....so disappointed...and the rest of them, just usual all u can eat...nothing special...and btw, if u do have a discount coupon, please read them carefully, coz oif u order thsoe so called "special", then the coupon is void and we end up each paid $26 on a week-day....which doesn't make any sense!! I have tried a lot of all u can eat rest, but this is really disapppointing...don't think i will go bk there again!!

  • Order: All you can eat Sushi plus the UNI option!!
