  • Went there on the weekend and can't wait to take people. The food tasted like a chef made it, great spices and texture. You could take your picky mother-in-law...the decor is elegant.beautiful asian music instead of soft rock !!The prices may look a little more expensive than most chinese restaurants but the portions were huge. This is my new fav restaurant.

  • This place is excellent. The soups here are incredible and the staff bend over backwards to ensure that you get a nice meal.

they do seem to be breaking in some new waitstaff that are... um... a bit challenged. However, I can overlook that for the delicious food this place produces.

I've read some pretty scalding reviews about this place recently, and I don't understand them. The place is consistently busy with a devoted clientele for lunch and dinner. the food is excellent and the prices are reasonable. I would go back to this lovely little restaurant in a heartbeat.

  • NOT AUTHENTIC & TOXIC! We heard that the wontons were 'home made' so we ordered that for 4 and topped it off with a traditional famous black bean beef on thick rice noodles (Haw fun). The order was made in Chinese but the server (asian) could not speak it himself.

We waited 20-25minutes until we got the soup and the noodles. A very long wait which was upseting. With the third mouthfull of wonton soup it began to tingle/burn the back of my throat I knew at that point that they had cooked the noodles in the broth as a shortcut as all Chinese people know...
YOU ARE SUPPOSE TO COOK THE NOODLE SEPERATELY AS IT HAS PERSERVATIVES/WAX/TOXINS THAT KEEP IT TOGETHER
We all consumed the "GAN SHUI" (translated from Chinese as soap water)

The soup was distributed to all 5 people already and all of us had eaten about half of it until it was noticed. My company was not asian and may not have picked it up and it wasn't until I brought it up that people noticed. The wontons were dinky in size and I had expected large ones for 'home made'.

The black bean beef was very tasty BUT they CHEATED US by supplementing the ordered 'Haw Fun' with the 50 cent thin noodle that you buy at No Frills. Authentic 'Haw Fun' is made fresh and ordered in! It all made sense after why it took so long as they had to cook the dried noodles first before they could implement it in the actual dish.

I suspected that they knew right off as the waiter and the manager were looking over at us to get our reaction. After the meal I advised the manager of 'gan shui' in the soup and she said she 'DIDN'T KNOW THAT YOU HAD TO COOK IT SEPERATELY' and that she would have to ask the cook about it. There was no offer to satisfy and none was asked for....NEVER AGAIN!!!!!!

Good luck if you decide to try it out!

  • The Chinese food offered in this place wasn't that traditional. The shrimp dumpling's skin was too thick, and the fried food have excessive oil. But the service was great.

  • After running a few errands me and my roommate developed a good appetite so we decided to grab some lunch in the neighborhood. Since my roommate has never tried Dim Sum before I thought Hong Ping would be a great place to introduce it to him. I've been there before so I knew that it would be super clean, with cool decor and that the couple running the show would provide us with the friendliest service (honestly I've never met restauranteurs who are more enthusiastic).

I decided to start my friend off with some Dim Sum staples.

The siu mai was full pork spare rib flavor and the shrimp dumplings had very tender wrappings (although maybe a little thick).
The sticky rice, although a little under seasoned (I fixed that with a little soy) had a whole lap chong sausage in it!
The turnip cake was just right, with enough pork fat in it and made with real turnip (no or little flour involved).
The shrimp spring rolls, a pretty straight forward dim sum dish, were extremely crispy.
The stuffed eggplant, my roommates favorite, was downing in black bean sauce (just the way I like it).

All dishes were under 4 bucks, so our grand total was only $24! And this includes the copious amounts of jasmine tea.

I've had plenty of Dim Sum in my day, so I can easily say that this is truly quality Dim Sum. Everything is super fresh, straight out of the steamer (or fryer) and on to the table. Even their hot chili oil is amazing (very fiery, so be careful)!

I've also heard they have hot pot, something like $15 for all you can cook, hence all you can eat. I even asked the guy if they make their own Sa Cha sauce...and they do! Definitely coming back again.

Note: They have some wonky opening hours between lunch and dinner. They are closed after 1pm I think until dinner time, so make sure their open before going. Don't make the same mistake I did and had to go wait until dinner to get my Dim Sum fill...longest wait of my life.

  • Order: siu mai, shrimp dumplings, stick rice in lotus leaves, shrimp spring rolls, stuffed eggplant and turnip cake. Chicken congee to go.

  • This review is for Hong Ping Restaurant on Horton Street at Waterloo (which doesn't seem to have its own entry yet). Today we visited it for the first time to try the dim sum lunch. The staff were friendly, helpful and attentive. I love dim sum and can say that the dishes we tried were excellent. This was the first time my father had tried this method of a la carte ordering, and (unusually for him) he liked absolutely everything he tasted! The prices were extremely reasonable, too - even including two beers, taxes and tip, we both dined for under $30. So - looks like this is a new family favourite! We'll be returning some day soon to try the dinner entrees, and may also take advantage of the takeout/delivery option.

  • Order: Dim sum: steamed shrimp dumplings, pork dumplings, turnip cakes, and stuffed eggplant.

  • They've Moved!

339 Horton St. E.(at Waterloo St.) across the former Great West Steak House.

Owners Jessie and Mike are enthusiastic and personable, and the food is just fantastic.

The Dim Sum is delicious for lunch, and we plan to come back for dinner, and also the Hot Pot fondue feast that is all-you-can-eat! Looks like they've also got takeout!

    The smoothies are tasty too!

  • Order: Dim Sum for lunch! Mango Smoothies! Wow!

  • I really like their bubble tea here and that's my usual staple when I visit. I did have their noodles and dumplings in soup one time and was very pleasantly surprised to find that the soup doesn't taste like it's made from stock, but rather is from scratch and has fresh veggies in it. Chicken mushroom dumplings are delicious. The couple who own the place are really friendly and nice but I don't think they're at the tea shop much anymore as they have opened a new restaurant (with the same name) on Horton and Waterloo (which is also great).
