It's definitely lacking in atmosphere, but the price is right and the food is good. The butter chicken, goat curry, and naan are the best things there. Not a lot of variety though, and the items in the buffet never change. I don't bother with the salad bar/ dessert section at all. I like to go for lunch when it's cheaper, take full advantage of the buffet, and then just eat a light snack later that night.

As a low cost all-you-can-eat lunch buffet, Modern India provides a variety of basic indian dishes, with a decent price point value for the spend.
The menu is not overly creative or inspired, nor does it ever seem to change. Butter chicken and other hot items do the job though. Cold selection does not rate as well, a selection of sliced raw vegetables and fruit seems more aligned to be the ingrediant prep bin for the hot choices, then a display of cold food dishes; a shame, because Indian cusine has the potential to offer a wide selection.
For dinner service the same buffet is offered, although the prices increases - not sure of the rationale.

Dishes were either bland or far too spicy. The spinach dish tasted like tin (as if it had been stored in a tin can for far too long). Gross food, ugly decor, poor service. We won't be returning.

Having tried out nearly all of the Indian Restaurants in Kitchener-Waterloo-Cambridge area, Modern India ranks near the bottom.
It took a few minutes before we were greeted with a half-distracted host who was swept away from us by his manager to discuss our seating arrangement. Evening was a busy place for this small coffee-shop-turned-restaurant. When our host returned he pointed to the chair-and-table that our party of two could occupy. He said he would bring a chair shortly, as there was only one chair at the table. We were quickly seated and promptly went to the buffet.
The plates were mostly chipped; I couldn't find a single one that was *not* chipped. Perhaps they should consider steel plates if this is a problem? Anyway, minor point...food could still be good. I picked up a vegetable pakora (vegetables dipped in corn flour, fried), some colorful rice, the only decently-cooked naan bread I could find, and some veggies.
It wasn't that the food was horrible, but the curries were mostly bland. The cook seemed to think that salt was a flavor and exclusively used it in preparation of the dishes. I was still in luck though: my naan bread was cooked; unfortunately, my partner didn't sift through the pile to find a thoroughly cooked one. His was mostly uncooked dough. I saw a waiter bringing in a new set of naan breads to the buffet table and from afar they looked thoroughly cooked. I signaled to my partner-- and sure enough, they were much better. So just...a mistake on the cook's part in the earlier batch.
We weren't really enjoying the food, and were not into the small pile of fruits they had in their salad bar. I would have much rather preferred some authentic Indian desserts or even Indian fruit (i.e. mango, lychees, etc.).
We were out in about 30 minutes in all. I can't imagine any reason to ever go back-- even if I was given a Buy 1 Get 1 Free buffet meal coupon. Actually, I highly doubt that it's worth a 20 minute drive even if I was given a FREE meal coupon.

I have been going to this restaurant since it opened five years ago. It used to be a heavenly experience every time I went. Over the years, I went more and more often until the last year. I now go rarely. I don't know if it is simply a matter of familiarity wearing out my taste for their food, or if the food just got blander. It is still good food, but I feel bloating and heartburn every time I go there now.
The butter chicken is usually good, though a little runny sometimes. The curry goat tends to be more bone than meat, but is also tasty. The tandoori chicken is often dry. The nan bread is usually excellent.
Service is friendly but minimal. The restaurant is quite clean.

Modern India has a moderate but adequate selection of both vegetarian and meat dishes. The food is tasty, though not overly spicy(hot), and is very good value. I've been to Modern India numerous times and plan on returning next time I am in that area.

l have been to this restaurat many times. l find the staff good, l enjoy going for the butter chicken and nan bread, also the rice dessert. l have gone to other places in town and l find this one has the best tasting dishes. It isn't always consistant in the spice level (sometimes mild sometimes hot). But l plan to go again. It is worth the price if you ask me. Go to McD's and see what you get for the price you pay! Don't change a thing, l will be back.

My husband and I go to Modern India quite frequently.
The buffet selection is not huge, but everthing is tasty! Butter chicken, Nan and Curried Goat are some of our favourites. It's usually spiced just right, some of the dishes are spicer than others. There is a range of sauces and chutneys to add to the flavour experience.
The atmosphere and service are adequite. Great spot for some tasy Indian at reasonable prices!

Buffet was somewhat limited in selection, but considering the price it was overal an amazing experience. $26 and change for two people to dine out is a great value. You can check out their website for a coupon worth 25% percent off the second person in your party. Absolutely will be back. Butter chicken and Naan bread was outstanding. Ice cream , fresh fruit included in the buffet price of $11.49. WIll totally go back - awesome!
