Wass Ethiopian Restaurant

I live by the restaurant and from the first time I went there, I can't stop going back. The atmosphere is very comfortable, the owner and people that work there are always nice and greet you. I'am a person who likes learning about different cultures and their cuisine and I must admit Ethiopian food is one of my favorite foods. One reason is because I don't eat pork and in their menu, most of their meat dishes are lamb and chicken. I also love spicy food and the spices they add in the Lamb Wat & Tibs are enough spicy to satisfy me as well as the vegetables they mix with the Tibs such as the green peppers, red peppers and onions.

The best part of the dish is to eat it with the Injera which is a kind of spongy "tortilla" with a delicious flavor that you can eat with your dish. If you don't want to eat your dish with the Injera, you also have the selection of eating it with rice and the best thing for those people who haven't tried it is that if you are a Vegetarian then it is the best place to come because this restaurant has a lot of delicious Vegetarian dishes and it has become a popular place for Vegetarians to eat at in the City of Hamilton. The Vegetarian dishes include lentils, chick peas, carrots etc. If you haven't come to this place, I suggest you give it a try. You won't regret it.

We enjoy trying different cuisines, and looked fwd to visiting Wass after reading rave reviews. I have no idea how anyone could possibly like the food there. It was the worst and very pricey for what we got. We tried the sampler for 2 as recommended by our server. There was one small chicken leg, minus the thigh, and 2 small pcs of bone with some lamb on them. No way enough meat for 2 people. Both in the same dark gravy stuff. Surrounded by 8 or so small heaps of various coloured mush. Red lentils, green lentils, some diced kale. The home- made bread, which we called the grey dishcloth, was cold and tasteless. Every item was the same mushy texture and taste. With tax and tip the bill was almost 40.00. There is no way the amount or quality of food was even close to being worth that. Gotta be one of the worst meals we have ever had.

Just returned from our first trip to the restaurant and have nothing but good things to say. The food was absolutely incredible. At one point i had to keep my hands under the table so I wouldn't overeat - it was that good. If you've never had Ethiopian food, this is the best place to start. Wass is the best host you could ask for, and seems so genuinely happy to educate you on each dish, and make sure you try as many different things as possible. The service was so warm and friendly, and made the entire experience that much more enjoyable. The scents and flavours of the food were delicious, and even though everything we tried was so different, it all compliments each other perfectly. Definitely try the honey wine as well! Didn't get a chance to try the coffee due to time constraints, but we'll definitely be back for that. Wass was roasting beans shortly after we arrived, and the smell was divine. Can't wait to go back!

My husband and I tried Wass Ethiopian Restaurant for something unique and different to do for our weekly date night.

Having never tried Ethiopian food before, we were both a little nervous. However, we were not disappointed! The food was delicious!

The owner of the restaurant was extremely friendly and kindly explained to us how to eat the food. You see – there were no utensils at our table. You eat with your hands. Or more specifically, you break off pieces of injera – a large sourdough bread, which kind of looks like a crepe, and use it to scoop and pick up your food.

Overall, it was a great night out and I would recommend Wass for anyone who is looking for something a little different to do.

Went yesterday for the first time, we ordered the biggest platter for sharing and had lots left over. Food was fantastic, many different flavours. We both found the various vegetarian dishes to be the best part of the meal. They don't really have much for dessert.

The service will be slower than most Canadians are used to but it's well worth it for the delicious fresh eats. The server was very friendly and happy to make recommendations, we just loved her. The atmosphere is cozy and pleasant and everyone else there seemed to be enjoying themselves as much as we were.

Highly recommended for a leisurely dinner with good company.

Saw the ad in the Spec and wanted to find out ourselves. It was very hot but we like the Patio and we were alone there. Inside it was pretty full. Still, we got excellent service and the owner came to greet us and explain the menu and the way the food is eaten. It was nice spicy and fresh, the bber was cold and overall a nice evening and experience. We will go back again. Nana & Rudi

The food and service at Wass are consistently great. The vegetarian combo is absolutely delicious and has so many wonder flavours to savour.

The only thing that made this visit even better than the previous ones was the 20% discount we received from being a fan of Wass on Facebook. Sign up - it's worth it to be kept in the loop and they often send out messages with discounts and specials!

I just wanted to tell you that I stopped by your booth at the food and drink feast last weekend and I absolutely enjoyed every bite. I had the red lentils, collard greens, lamb stew and bread.... everything was phenomenal!!! I have looked up some of the recipes online and can't wait to try and make the lentils and bread myself at home. Even my five year old will love it!!!

You do an excellent job with everything, given the nature of the venue, I would imagine it would be difficult to keep the quality up to par but everything was as good as what I would expect to have at the restaurant, which I will definitely be coming to in the near future.

Thank you for introducing me to something that I haven't tried before! I love it and i'm very happy that you are in a great location near my home!!

Have to say, it's nice to see some variety in Hamilton. Being from Toronto, it's hard to like the lack of culture in Hamilton sometimes. The owner Wassie served us and I must say he really put the personal touch on our dining experience. He took the time to educate us on the history of Ethiopian cuisine and show us how to properly order and eat. It was quite an education. We highly recommend trying it out if you are up for some adventure. The only thing we found negative was that the dining room is underground and there wasn't any natural light.

This is a wonderful part of Hamilton that more people need to visit! Wass the owner was so attentive to my friends and I. He gave very descriptive recommendations on what to order. We split two combination platters between 6 people, which was more than enough food, and so so good. The interactive feel of ethiopian food is so fun. He then brought out two additional dishes (on the house) simply because he wanted us to try them. They were outstanding also.
Try the honey wine, try the coffee ceremony, and try every. single. dish.
This place is incredibly affordable, especially if you're splitting the huge platters with friends. So yummy...can't say enough about it!
