  • Excellent, authentic Mexican food - which is surprisingly difficult to find in Canada. They aren't afraid to spice things up, so if you like a little heat, don't be shy about asking for it. The most pleasant surprise of all is the tortilleria - fresh tortillas made every Thursday that are available from the store in the back. They make all the difference in the taste of a meal. We'll happily return - both for a meal that reminds us of the tastes of Mexico AND for the tortillas!

  • Mexican food is hard to come by in Hamilton, but I'm glad that this place exists.

People who are concerned about the interior design of the place would be happy to know that they're also fixing it up.

As we were waiting for our order, you can glance over and see them all making the food from scratch behind a wooden screen door. There was this old-world feel that you really can't get anywhere, and that level of authenticity was done almost by accident. It is such a direct contrast of peering into the kitchen of a Mexican fast food joint as they inject the meat using a caulking gun into a burrito.

If you're interested in trying it out on your own, there's also a grocery store in the back, and handcrafts and paintings as well to purchase.

    Go there. Now.

  • First of all like other reviews you cannot judge the food from the look if the restaurant. We sit down and the server comes right away with the menus. After mulling it over and remembering the great review on Restaurantica about the Chicken Enchliada's being the best hands down I decided to order them. But we weren't sure which appetizer to order. The other person in my party wanted to try the cactus quesedilla, and the server told me it tastes like green pepper so I agreed to it. We also order our drinks.

The appetizer came(still no drinks) and it was amazing. Like nothing I have ever tried in my life and the presentation was beautiful. It came with cactus and mozzarella and was the perfect combination of cactus and mozzarella in side the quesedilla(neither taste was overpowering the other). It was garnished with lettuce, tomato and sour cream very decoratively. The drinks came at the end of eating the appetizer.

It is a long wait for the food, but the server assured me it is because everything is made fresh(personal note: fresh food in restaurants is hard to come by these days). And when it arrived and it looked beautiful like the appetizer and when I tried it, I was amazed at how different a taste it was to most things I eat on a regular basis. And the taste quality too was amazing. The plate came with 2 enchilada's covered with a red tomatoey sauce and then lettuce and tomato and sour cream(done very beautiful), a pile of bean dip with grated mozzarella on top, fresh made chips in the bean dip, a pile of rice(dressed with sauce and sour cream to look nice), and a little salad of lettuce and tomato with more grated mozzarella on top.(Personal note: before leavingI noticed some other peoples plates as being served and this restaurant really puts emphasis on presentation that I have never seen before at restaurants of this same price range eg. chain restaurants). The taste of the food was really fresh and great. Now the reason I gave service 4 out of five is because our drinks ran out and were never refilled.

If you like Mexican or want to try something new, this is a great place to get great food at very reasonable prices. The server told me that the entree that I had won award, top prize in the city of Hamilton, and the taste explains why.

  • Great food; Great atmosphere; Great hidden jem!

The food is delicious and authentic!

I love the mix-use idea of having a Restaurant mixed with a mini Mexican Market and an Art Gallery!

The food took WAY too long to come out, even after checking out the gallery wall and market. But it was so worth it! Amazing authentic mexican sauces, marinades and ingredients made my guest and I forget all about the wait, and left us with a great impression on a great establishment!

  • Absolutely fantastic and authentic Mexican food. We went there for a birthday, and at the end of the meal, the staff brought out cake and muffins for all at no charge, gave the birthday boy some tequila shots, and offered to take pictures of our party wearing sombreros and a full bottle of tequila. The drinks were pricy, but you get what you pay for for sure. Although the physical location is a little run down looking, don't let this keep you from eating here. We will be returning for sure!

  • Authentic Mexican food at an affordable price. A rare gem!

I was on the hunt for a good Mexican restaurant for over a year. It ended with me finding this restaurant. There might be a better place in Toronto that I don't know about, but other than downtown Toronto this is the best Mexican restaurant from (at least) here to Barrie.

The Guacamole was a bit sour (too much lemon juice) but the homemade chips were awesome.

The Cactus Enchiladas (Vegetarian) were sweet and delicious. Not a strange flavour at all.

The Chicken Enchiladas is my favourite though, hands down.

The first time I came to this restaurant the guy at the counter opened the containers and showed off the food for me. I thought that was a nice touch. He also called me 'amigo' a lot. He was very cool :)

The restaurant itself looks a little run down and a mix between a specialty grocery store and a take out style restaurant. Usually Mexican music is playing and it creates a nice environment.

I don't like going downtown for food since parking is usually an issue. Regardless, there's actually a fair number of spots to park nearby so it's not that big of a problem, especially at night.

It's family owned and they're nice people. If you want Mexican, go here! You'll be keeping good people in business!

  • Authentic Mexican food, Think Mexican when you are ordering mild, medium or hot... Be specific with how much spice you can take.
    Their gucamole was amazing.
    Hard-to-find beers are served.
Store front restaurant, priority is on the food not on the decor or atmosphere.
Staff are friendly and are pleased when you try out your spanish!

  • Wow, does this place rock. I lived for a while in the San Francisco Bay area and got used to great, inexpensive Mexican food that could be found in wonderful dives. Mex-I-Can is not really divey, but it is a BIT of a dive, but it rocks. The tacos are absolute perfection, and are EXACTLY what I got used to in California. The other stuff on the menu is fantastic too. The people who run the place are cool, nice people, who seem to enjoy what they are doing. With the possible exception of really expensive places that I don't go to, the best restaurant in the area.
