I eat at One Duke pretty regularly and have partaken of many of their dinner, lunch and breakfast offerings. The food is always excellent.
Particularly noteworthy: The french toast is a must have on a Sunday morning- amazingly decadent! The Bonanza and Finnish Pizzas, burgers, Duke salad, and Duke a Jitos are all awesome, but the best item on the menu is the Mussels- WOW! My only critism is the dessert menu consists of only a few items that overall are a bit...blah. They need a couple more options- maybe a cheesecake?
The atmosphere is relaxed and the restaurant is comfortable and clean. Although it could be said the decor could use some professional attention, who cares? The food rocks!

My wife and I are always looking for places for Sunday breakfast. We rediscovered One Duke.
The service was very attentive and friendly. The ambiance was nice and relaxed.
I ordered the Traditional egg breakfast while my wife had the "Duke Down the Well" - Poached eggs served in tomatos with a curry sauce.
The presentation was lovely, portions are generous and served hot so you know it was just made moments prior to serving.
With coffee and juice the bill came up to $30, which is reasonable considering the venue.
As far as we're concerned, you found our breakfast place - One Duke.

#1 in our books for brunch. We go often for Sunday Brunch and it's not to be missed. The menu is small, since they like to focus on doing things well. But you can still get your standard eggs & sausage breakfast, or their Flap Jacksons, or my absolute favorite, Duke Down the Well. Two poached eggs sit inside tomatoes, drenched with a zesty curry sauce, tasty home fries, with rye toast and a fruit salad the side. Although the menu says to be patient for the food (as it's worth the wait) I honestly can't remember a time when we've noticed a particularly long waiting time. The service is friendly, responsive, and helpful. In the summer, we like to eat on the patio, and they will bring out a bowl of water for our pooches. Why wait 30 minutes or more at a chain brunch joint (hello Cora's) when you can get a table right away, plus lovely, homestyle cooking? One Duke rocks.

A small group of us decided to have a night out and try One Duke on a friends suggestion. The service was attentive and politite as well as informative. The food was great and served hot. We were told it may take a little longer because they were busy but we didn't mind. Never once when we were there did we feel pressured to leave which you do so often in other places. This was great because we ended up spending 4 hours there and getting caught up with our friends. All in all we all left full and happy.

I love this little gem in Hamilton. We enjoy going and recently we found out our dog could enjoy the patio as well. The food is always great and the service is always welcoming. It is great that you can come to relax in this place and they don't pressure you to leave.

I joined restaurantica just to write about how annoyed I was by the service here. I'm a big supporter of local independent establishments, but 1 Duke seemed to care less about my patronage. Although I did enjoy my food - it was SO overpriced for what I got, and the wait time was beyond acceptable. They never once apologized even though it was obvious they knew we were annoyed. And I'm the most laid back customer ever. I've never ever complained. Until now.
I enjoyed my food but again, who cares, with service that bad, and having to wait so long for our food ( an hour for an app? i don't think so!). Won't be returning.

I don't know what the other reviewers were writing. We went for Mother's day brunch and everything was fantastic. My mother in law was extremely happy and she is very hard to please. She can't wait to return and try out dinner. Thank you to the staff for making Mother's Day great

Absolutely terrible! I can not tell you how embarresed I was after bring relatives there. Who writes the reviews here? The staff possibly?? My food was stone cold, it was just slopped together in what I can only describe as a grease puddle, service was slow and unattentive, and it was way overpriced. Oh not to mention the peeling paint is really spellbounding as far as decor goes. Maybe at night when the place is very dark it may be intimate but during the day I'd encourage people who love good food and atmosphere to stay away and save yourself the bad food and overpriced bill.

I have been going to 1 Duke almost every Sunday for four years now, yet today I was turned away with a cool, "Sorry, we're full."
Today was Mother's Day, so it was understandable that the place was full. I did, however, spot some empty seats at the bar, but I was not offered the option of taking one of them instead of my usual table- I was just told that I could not eat there that day. I suspect that the real reason was because the place was so busy that one more person to serve was more than the harried staff could handle.
I wouldn't have been so perturbed if an effort had been made to encourage me to come back. As a consumer and an employee I know that sometimes regular customers have their routines interrupted by holiday crowds. But I was turned away as impersonally as if I hadn't spent almost $600 a year there, not including drinks. There was no effort made at all to find some unoccupied seat or even offer more of an apology than "No, sorry."
I'm disappointed by this experience, but found another pub willing to serve me a couple of streets away. The food was excellent, the staff attentive, and I can only hope that they will appreciate a weekly customer more than 1 Duke does.
I will not be back.
