Yo shi Japanese Restaurant

My partner and I have gone to Fuji sushi downtown for awhile. While we like it, we decided to go to Yo shi for the first time ever tonight, for a change, after reading some good reviews on this site. Wow, were we ever underwhelmed. Here's how it went:

The options available were highly restrictive: Either BOTH of us had to order off the menu, or BOTH of us had to order the All You Can Eat option. The conundrum was this: The All You Can Eat menu seemed to be a deal, but looked to eliminate some options, but ordering the more interesting rolls we would want to order off the regular menu looked to be an extremely expensive affair, and so we turned to the alternative.

The All You Can Eat menu is a somewhat sparse selection of items off the main menu-- essentially, all of the most boring and inexpensive items. Want Rainbow Rolls and Dragon Rolls? You won't find them here. Instead, we were faced with a limited selection of some appetizers and very basic rolls that in the end turned out to be extremely bland and mostly rice.

An even bigger problem was the fact that it took us forever and a day to actually get anything that we ordered. It's fine and well to limit eating-time to an hour and a half, but in that case, waiters should not take 45 minutes to finish bringing what we ordered. When we did get our items, we didn't receive any wasabi or ginger to try and add any flavour to the bland rolls we were restricted to. And why the wait in the first place? The place wasn't even half-full, and we didn't order that much!

People say that Fuji is low-quality and overrated, but frankly, we both agreed that we would take it any day over our experience at Yo shi. The variety is so much greater, the quality there is at least as good, and the service is quick and snappy.

If California rolls are all you care about at a sushi restaurant, and you don't mind waiting forever to eat them, then this could be the place for you. It could be that ordering off the menu offers a better experience, but we just don't have the money for that at this point in time.

I went here for lunch and had their buffet. They have some good selections, but they need to have shrimp tempura as a mandatory. It was good for it's price and the sushi was nice a fresh. The Misu Soup sea weed was kind of rubbery. Good service and friendly staff.

Me, my wife and our 1.5 year old daughter came for lunch on one of the busiest days of the year.The first friday of back to school, unknowingly we can and the place was packed with high school students, ineviatably the number of high school students will dwindle down as the year goes by, anyways we came in the staff give us a nice big room a way from all the kids..who sometimes were cussing and banging their utensils on the glass.Not managements fault at all since they are making a lot of money from these kids.We had the all you can eat lunch and the food came 5 minutes later which i thought was a long time, I ordered an imported Japeanese beer and it was an excellent compliment to the sushi.The chicken teriyaki was out of this world in flavour, everything on the menu was hot and extremely delicious.After the high school students left the staff seemed to forget about us and it took so long for them to make our next batch of order that we decided to leave and our bill was 40 dollars.The all you can eat was 13 bucks each, the beer was 6.50 and they weren't suppose to charge my 1.5 year old daughter who ate 2 pieces of sushi, ice cream and some wasabi that she cried after eating by accident.I just that the bill was too high.

Everything is amazingly good: fresh sushi, tasty foods, fast and friendly service.

I came back here again despite my last time saying i would never come back, but only because a friend recommended it to me and said there was new management, so I thought I'd give them a second chance. Ok, that was their last!

The title says it all. If you're not eating sushi, the food is good...miso soup, teriyaki chicken, etc. But since i go there primarily for sushi, my complaints from the last time are still true! They use way too much rice and not enough filling. It's what sushi restaurants do to save on their cost but weakens the quality.

There were two kinds of sushi in particular that not only had too much rice, but too much mayo! Put the spoon down and stop adding mayo when the other ingredients are drowning in it!

I've been to every sushi place in Guelph multiple times and Fuji still is my favorite...in Guelph. No one here beats the sushi in California!

Fresh sushi and everything we ordered was perfectly presented, cooked or otherwise. Only issue was wishing menu was bigger, but it's understandable since it's not as busy as other all you can eat places.

Fish was not fresh - tasted frozen and thawed.

Limited lunch buffet menu - mostly non-traditional sushi rolls and deep fried foods. No sashimi or hand rolls - very disappointing.

Much better places to eat sushi in Guelph and KW area!

Took my wife and 2 children here for Mother's Day lunch. Called ahead to ensure they would be open at 2pm as their website stated. No one answered phone. Got a call back one hour later (I guess they have call display) and was told they would open at 2:30pm. Drove 40 minutes and arrived at 2:40pm as lunch buffet ends at 3pm- door was locked. Knocked and a person answered the door and stated the boss was not there. He was in Toronto and should be back within an hour. I asked if we could go in, and was told 'no' and it should not be long. Needless to say - we left!

Very disappointed! It's Mother's Day - you need to ensure your business is ready for customers at opening time... not travelling around to Toronto. Will never return!

We are big sushi fans and quite picky and I feel confident to say that Yo Shi is the best sushi in Guelph by far. A visit last night to the newest Japanese restaurant in town drove that point home as every single item at Yo Shi is markedly better.
I recently held a birthday dinner at Yo Shi and was worried that my Toronto friends, spoiled by the many excellent sushi restaurants in the city, would be disappointed. Yo Shi more than pleased everyone. They gave us one of the cool little back rooms and the sushi and service were great.
The decor at Yo Shi is not fancy by any means, perhaps I might go as far as to say it's ugly, but the friendly family-run atmosphere turns this into a positive.
Try the Toyko roll, butterfish nigiri and the Yam tempura.

Excellent SUSHI! I have been very disappointed by sushi in guelph lately. That is until I found this establishment. I finally love spicy tuna again! This restaurants chefs know that sushi is not supposed to be boggled down with mayo. Really excellent food and even better service! Will definitely go again.
