  • Two of us had dinner at Artisanale last night, it was our first time at the new location on Woolwich Street. We both had beet salad - the beets (multicoloured), some pickled and some roasted were delicious but the dressing had an overpowering amount of garlic and onion in it.

The rabbit and everything that accompanied it was close to perfect, and it was a very generous portion.

The lamb (again a large portion) was delicious but there was a huge amount of garlic stuffed between the meat and the skin. I love garlic but this was just way too much and I had to scrape most of it out. It came with a tomato tian (shallow casserole) and roast potatoes - both delicious.

We shared the peach crepe, which was light and fresh and came with a generous dollop of fresh cream.

We asked for, and got, very strong cappucinos, but the foam was quite watery and had no substance.

Overall the food was really good, but these small things moved it down a notch from 'wonderful.'

The main problem I found was the lighting - it's neither bright and modern, nor soft and intimate. The lighting is all overhead and it's like eating under a 40 watt bulb. The lights cast a greyish/yellow pall over everything (food, walls, complexion) and create a very dismal ambience. The decor is very rustic and could be quite charming and inviting but that lighting would make even the most luxurious setting seem depressing and cold.

I will definitely be back because I think Yasser is one of best chefs in Guelph, but PLEASE, PLEASE change the lighting.

  • Order: beet salad, rabbit, lamb, peach crepe, cappucino, Shiraz

  • Artisanal is the real deal, I have been many times over the years and every time I go I am always pleased. Whether I have there fresh made pasta or the duck confit which always has a great salad to match it. The fish is always fresh and served with perfectly seasoned.

The server's are always welcoming and proper, and from the homemade bread to the mayonnaise, even there burger buns are made in house, this place is the real deal!

  • Second time, first for Dinner, now for Lunch. What brought me back was the excellent green salad-- totally simple, lettuce and dressing, but PERFECT-- just the right amount of dressing, and beautiful greens. Also, the chicken liver mousse/pate with prunes-- I generally avoid chicken liver stuff, not a flavour I like much, but I was seduced by the marinated prunes. It was excellent-- I wanted more prune stuff, and will ask next time. The mussel starter for dinner is not inspired, though pretty. Quiche very good, and Friend had a Ravioli dish with white truffle cream, which is large, and which she liked. Another had a pickerel dish which he enjoyed-- was a substitute for the char they had run out of. The service is a bit ragged-- they really should either put the pepper on the table or remember to offer it. I will definitely will be going back-- they are moving, by the way. Lots of things I want to try. Bread good, too.

  • Order: green salad, mussel starter, pickerel, Ravioli, quiche, chicken liver mousse with prunes...

  • I'd seen Artisanale on previous visits to the Bookshelf, so I decided to stop in to grab a light lunch and do a little work on my laptop in the early afternoon. Staff was pleasant enough, if slightly disengaged. Free Wifi was nice.

My sandwich left a lot to be desired. It was small, the taste was very one dimensional and I came across a bone and large piece of cartilage, indicating rather careless preparation. Iced tea was really nice and the fair-trade coffee was good too. Service was good, with several offers of coffee refills. Overall I came away disappointed. I will give it another try because of its convenient location next to The Bookshelf.

  • Order: Chicken tampenade sandwich, sweetened iced tea, coffee

  • I had dinner at your restaurant with my wife last night and I have to say it was the best meal I have had since moving to Canada (Calgary & Guelph) from the UK 10 years ago.

You should be proud of what you are doing with the menu and local food/wines also with your staff. Your waiter who was very knowledgeable and excited about you and the food that the restaurant produces.

My compliments to the chef who was on last night Sun 14th march, finally a steak frites comparable to ones I have had in Paris!!! and the rabbit was perfect.

Well done and see you soon.

  • Absolutely divine food, and wonderfully friendly service. Their lemon tart is the only dessert my father will eat, it is so good! I love the new dishes they come up with (although rare) and I am always satisfied with the experiments. This is a place that I will continue to go as long as I am in Guelph.

  • Order: Salade verte with shallot vinaigrette; Penne with preserved tomato sauce, summer basil & parmesan; Lemon tart

  • This was the best meal I have had in Guelph since I moved to this city last year. Not only was the food presented beautifully, but the taste was nothing short of exquisite. These are undoubtedly some of the most passionate and talented chefs in the area.

We were seated promptly, offered information and suggestions and treated graciously throughout the meal. The wine list was extensive, varied and VERY reasonably priced. Although there were quite a few French bottles that were unrecognizable to our party, we found the server to be quite helpful in guiding our decision. You won't find too many restaurants that offer a beautiful, authentic pinot noir for $40, not to mention a selection of sustainably-produced wines.

We all had appetizers and main courses; the endive and goat cheese salad was enjoyed by everyone at the table, and the fish soup was delicate and very flavourful. I found that the meat was cooked perfectly and the flavours were well balanced--in fact, my friends and I discussed our dishes for a good part of the meal! I'm sorry to read that some have considered the portions to be too small and the food overpriced; perhaps the restaurant has made some changes since these reviewers had last dined there. I would expect to pay much more for local, organic, and expertly-prepared food. If you do decide to dine here, ask about their philosophy and their suppliers--they were very happy to talk to us about what they do.

Certainly one of the best restaurants I have been to in Guelph, and I plan to go again soon.

  • I have gone to this restaurant 5 times, twice for lunch, twice for dinner, and once for an event we held at the restaurant.

I gave this restaurant a glowing review last year but return visits and a bad ending to the event has lead us to never return. The food is uneven; our last visit included an octopus and courgette appetizer that was excellent, a main course chicken dish that was umemorable but expensive, and an overly sweet dessert with sour berries that was actually difficult to eat.

The last straw came when we rented the back of the restaurant for a Saturday afternoon event. We agreed to the timing and menu but Yassar pulled a fast one on us the day before the event when he insisted we had to pay for a minimum 60 lunches (we had 56.) The food was served an HOUR later than we had agreed which meant the open bar bill tallied up significantly. We were supposed to make about 2,500 from the fundraiser but in the end we barely made a $1000 due to the bar bill and extra four lunches.

Needless to say we won't be returning, ever.

  • Total Bush League Operation!

I have been here a few times now. Totally amature hour restaurant. The owner greets me rudely, takes my order, then forgets to tell the staff what I ordered for lunch. The price of everything, top to bottom, is waaaay overpriced. If you want a coffee and cookie while you check out a new book you bought at the Bookshelf - get ready to pay $4.00 and tip expected.

Despite the bad service, manners, overpriced everything etc., I took a friend for dinner. Small portions, not cooked properly, and bad service again. I wonder how this place stays in business, when after dinner you have to go somewhere else to eat. Prices unreasonable, and not worth it. I guess some people will only eat at "fancy" restaurants, and are taken by the atmosphere. I personally don't care about the nice leather chairs or light bulbs when I go out, I want good food with portions for a non-vegan grown man, prepared properly, friendly service, and a good price. This place doesn't do any of that.

Finally, when I wanted to pop in for a coffee after picking up a book at the Bookshelf, they were closed at 2:45pm on a Tuesday. The owner obviously doesn't understand business, you have to have reliable consistent hours. The server told me they "close at 2:30pm on Monday and Tuesday now". You just can't close at random hours, it's not good business. So I promptly took my business to Capistrano, which has better coffee, food, prices, and service anyway. Maybe the owners there will buy this sad sack operation and turn it around.

If you want a good meal downtown or anywhere in Guelph there are at least 50 places to go before here.

  • Order: Coffee and lunch first time....wine, appetizers, main courses, second time. Third (and last time) they were closed at 2:30pm.
