  • Bistro Riviere opened five years ago, quite an accomplishment as most new restaurants don't survive anywhere near that long. So congratulations to this pleasant restaurant on its anniversary in the heart of the thriving village of Erin. Thriving indeed as it me took a while at 1:00 P.M. on a Wednesday afternoon to find a parking place.

I was welcomed as I stepped in and escorted to a banquette seat across the pleasantly decorated dining room with its sunny saffron-colored walls and your basic black restaurant furniture. One unusually hospitable note, there’s small cushions strategically placed along the banquette seating providing a little extra comfort for guests. Kudos to the owners for their unique and thoughtful touch.

My server delivered a menu and graciously asked if I wanted her to describe the daily specials. I agreed and thankfully was only subjected to her reading to me that the soup of the day was Cream of Tomato and there was a salad featuring a grilled filet of rainbow trout with a variety of accompanying blandishments including wasabi.

The compact menu is well balanced with nine starters, three entrée salads, five typical bistro entrées and a trio of sandwiches. For my lunch I chose the Insalata Sonia and the Curried Mussels as they sounded reasonably unique along with a tasty dark draft ale from Barrie’s Flying Monkey brewery.

My salad promptly arrived comprised of crisp mixed greens, oven roasted tomatoes and carrot shreds tossed in balsamic vinaigrette, but missing the advertised snow peas. It was an acceptable salad, but just that. The tomatoes, even roasted, were predictably flavorless. Why bother?

Things looked up as soon as the curried mussels arrived. They were simply outstanding! The ample portion was bathed in a well-crafted garlic and curry sauce but topped with more of the forgettable tomatoes. An oven toasted and thinly sliced half baguette provided a medium for sopping up the delicious sauce as no spoon was provided. Bread is better anyway and the extra touch of a few moments in a hot oven substantially enhanced it..

Overall, it is clearly the imaginative and competent cooking that sets this restaurant above most. Service was pleasant and efficient, but I was puzzled by the response to anything I said was either “No worries.” or ”No problem.” and sometimes both. Guests don’t think they give servers worries or problems so why say it?

If you're in the area it's well worth giving them a try.

  • This is by far my most favourite restaurant! We live locally and my husband and I frequent the Bistro often. We are always greeted by friendly staff, the atmosphere is great and the food is to die for. The cheesecake is the best ever!! We love the food so much that we had them cater our wedding party. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who is interested in going out for a great meal, some nice wine and isn't afraid to spend a few bucks to have a fabulous dinner out. You will NOT be disappointed!!

  • Order: Love their curried mussels, seafood pasta, beef tenderloin, and as I said already the cheesecake is devine!

  • Food can be excellent, but can also be lame.

My wife and I went out for dinner, for apps I had wild mushroom over arugala with goat cheese; stunning! My wife had caesar salad; sad wilted lettuce, old, refrigerated stale croutons, old refrigerated cheese crisp.

    One hit, one strike.

Mains: I had the chicken special, which I was pretty sure server told me was stuffed with goat cheese and asparagus...turns out it was stuffed with crab (!?). What did the crab stuffed chicken taste like? Fish. The crab was fishy, and so was the chicken....it wasn't terrible, just...very odd. Potato and veggies were great. If I'd wanted fish I would've ordered the basa.

My wife had mushroom stuffed ravioli in a cream sauce with beef tenderloin; ravioli excellent, sauce very nice, tenderloin tough and chewy - yesterdays leftovers (?)

Both half a strike, half a hit, so 1/1 again.

    Dessert: raspberry/chocolate tartuffo - awesome.

    Hit.

So 3 out of 5. For $130 with wine/taxes/tip I'll only go back once i save up, feel like rolling the dice, and am feeling lucky.

  • Order: wild mushroom salad, caesar salad, chicken special, pasta special, raspberry/chocolate tartuffo

  • Discovered this place on my first night after moving to the area. Was surprised to find such a nice bistro in a tiny little town!

Food and service is always great. They always have the most delicious daily specials. In my dozen trips to this place, I have only ordered off of the regular menu once!

This has become the go-to local place for heading out for a celebratory dinner among my friends and family.

  • Order: bruschetta, proscuitto wrapped veal medallions, chicken and mushroom farfalle, molten lava cake, creme brulee

  • Great food, good service, a little busy - but that speaks well of the place! Would go again, would recommend to others. It was a nice surprise that Erin would host such a trendy spot.

We will definately be back again.
We sampled a large portion of the menu and were truly impressed. Highlights were the lava cake and the butter tart they made the perfect end to a perfect meal. If you are close to this restaurant don't miss the opportunity to stop in.

  • Order: just about everything... samosas, bruschetta, wild mushrooms, brie, grilled vegetables, lava cake was amazing

  • The Bistro is one of my favorite restaurants. It is so nice to have a restaurant like this close to home. Every time I go the food and service are expecptional! The complimentary bread and hummus spread are amazing. I'm not normally a dessert person but I can't resist the choices they offer.
    Great work Tharnton and Sonia

  • A girls' night out for dinner and drinks... perfect location! Our service was second to none... the waitress was busy, so Sonia took care of us herself. Everything was perfect! the spinach humus was amazing.. and a nice touch that they served it with bread from the bakery next door. I thought it was great that Sonia mentioned that as well. Nothing better for an establishment than to boost local businesses! the appetizers were fabulous! maybe a bit too good though, not everyone wanted to share. We tried the grilled portobello mushroom and veggies with brie and I believe the salmon appetizer that looked delicious.. we decided to have one of the features for our entrees, beef tenderloin, great decision! the beef was cooked to perfection and those potatoes.. wow! Our drinks were presented really well and tasted like having a whole lot more! No one had room for dessert, but we made Sonia tell us what they were anyway... next time, we're all leaving room! Again, she mentioned one of the desserts was from a bakery in Hillsburgh. very impressive..
the only suggestion any of us could think of.... Thornton, the chef/owner, needs a new hat to change into when he's done cooking!
well done Sonia and Thornton! Erin is truly fortunate to have the Bistro as a dining option! maybe you'll think of opening another one in Guelph one day.....

  • Order: grilled veggies and brie, beef tenderloin, cosmos

  • Amazing food, they actually know how to cook fish. Not dry but full of flavour! I'm not a fan of cheese but the Foccacia was just succulent, and the Wasabi n Soy marinade was to die for. Lucky me it was their plat du jour. Which is another nice thing, a small city bistro with daily specials, like you're not going to get it again.
The atmosphere was very sophisticated without being stuffy. I saw ties but people where still laughing and having a good time. The staff makes you feel like family ;)
Take my advice they make a really good Tom Collins, ask Sonia at the Bar.
It is really refreshing to see a small city serve up such class and refinement with all the pleasantries you'd expect there. Congratulations on your first year in business. Cheers to many more!

  • Order: Mushroom & Brie Foccacia, Bruschetta, Wild Salmon, Wasabi & Soy Marinated Swordfish, *Tom Collins*
