  • Some family and I went into this restaurant for dinner one evening. We're regulars at other German restaurants in Hamilton, and thought it would be interesting to compare. That turned out to be a big mistake.

The first thing I noticed was the decor; drab, dirty, and in urgent need of updating. Table seats are the type of uncomfortable metal armchairs which are usually found in the waiting room of a doctor's office. Booth seats were tolerable at best.

Our waitress was slow, inattentive, and miserable (even though there were only a handful of other diners in the room). The three of us each ordered different types of sausages which came with a choice of homefries or salad. The homefries were cold and looked more like mashed potatoes. Salad dressing was distributed from an old metal holder which was left sitting out in the open. Despite ordering different types of sausages, we all received the same thing, which looked more like a store-bought hot dog. I was puzzled as to why there was no sauerkraut included, and upon raising the issue with the waitress, was informed that sauerkraut is considered a side dish on its own, and she assumed we would only want salad or homefries (which is all she mentioned when taking orders). Any other German or Austrian restaurant I've eaten in included sauerkraut at no charge. She then, reluctantly, brought us awful sauerkraut which seemed to have been heated up in a microwave.

The food was awful and the service a disgrace. I felt compelled to apologise to my dinner guests, and it was my idea to give the Schwaben Inn a try. If you're looking for good, authentic German cuisine, LOOK ELSEWHERE.

  • The food was delicious and fresh. Most meals come with a salad, soup, meat, and two sides for about $14. Drinks are cheap.

The soups (barley and cabbage for us) were great. The salads came with a selection of homemade dressings. They were the best I'd ever had. Lots of fresh bread at the table. The main meals are good portions with a delicious choice of sides. My entire party was full and very satisfied.

Our waitress was friendly and took good care of us.

Would recommend this to anyone visiting Dundas.

  • Great food and great service on a cold night, felt very comfortable.

  • Order: I started with an ice cold Dab draft and we both had delicious (&hot) cabbage soup and nice crisp salads. My wife had a huge portion of schnitzel, spatzle and turnip and I had a smoked bratwurst, homefries and red cabbage. Her meal came with the soup and salad, mine was extra but reasonable.

  • My family has been going to this place since my dad went to Mac (25+ years ago). It's been tradition that after the graduation of each person in my family from mac, we go to the schwaben inn, so it holds a special place in my heart. 3/3 so far.

  • Fantastic traditional German cuisine with friendly, courteous, knowledgeable staff. Feels as comfortable as home while immersed in another culture. A humble establishment, but also a great treasure neatly tucked away in Dundas.
