  • I feel sorry for whoever rates this place 5 stars, they've obviously never had good food. This makes me seriously lose faith in going to restaurants based on opinions here on restaurantica...

First of all, we were seated by a sad, unenthusiastic, young waitress. Her tone was unpleasant and it was clear she didn't care at all about this place or our dining experience.

The restaurant is poorly decorated. Cheap, old cafeteria type chairs. Booth seats repaired with black duct tape. Empty bottles of German beer arranged sparsely on the dusty edge of the dining room. We were the only people here under 70 years old.

Now for the food. The rye bread at the table was stale. I ordered Dom's Chicken. It was a plain old pan fried chicken breast (not even breaded) topped with cheese and a few button mushrooms.... that's it. Who couldn't cook that at home with the greatest of ease? The meal came with the worst spaetzle I've ever had, totally doughy and undercooked, an extremely tiny, plain salad consisting of iceberg lettuce with a few onions accompanied by this MASSIVE contraption with 4 bowls of salad dressing (no way it was home made dressing). Now, don't tell me that this thing is emptied and cleaned out after every table it's brought to, there was just far too much dressing in it for them to do that. Disgusting! The meal also came with a cabbage soup, which was way over salted and had a sweet, tomato taste to it, I'm certain is was flavored with ketchup.

My girlfriend had Vienna Schnitzel. You would figure they could cook that properly.. NO! It was burnt on one side and served with that side down, (sneaky bastards). The meat was totally dry inside. The breading was peppery and tasted terrible. Her Caesar Salad had this horrible, tangy flavor and the greens were wilted. Crutons were stale. Her Chicken and Rice soup was way over salted. She also ordered rice with her dish, that came plain as can be with corn.. the corn had brown spots on it.

If I were to describe this place to my friends, I would use a variety of words that are deemed inappropriate for this website. They should be ASHAMED to charge what they do for this salty garbage.

  • Order: Dom's Chicken, Cabbage Soup, Spaetzle, House Salad, Vienna Schnitzel, Chicken and Rice Soup, Rice, Caesar Salad

  • I adored my return to "the schwab". It looked exactly as I remembered so if you want new and flashy, not the place for you. Service was fast and friendly especially since there were several large parties. It was a Friday nighth and the place was packed. We had apps, a cabbage roll soup and a goulash soup both were excellent. We had the paprka schitzel with spaetle and veg. Came with salad and we had a piece of black forest cake. The cake was the real deal, liquor drenched cake with dark cherry layers. Heavenly.... and oh, the stein's, the wonderful, reasonably priced steins.... Well worth the sojurn into Dundas!

  • Ok..based on the reviews here, I would've thought this restaurant was good?? Went with a friend for dinner. What a bad experience foodwise! Nothing (and I really mean nothing was FRESH!). The bread which was covered in a bread basket was dry. I had knackwurst which I could not eeven touch. It was hard, cold and dry. The red cabbage was soggy and obviously re-heated. My friend's dinner was not much better either. She had the dinner schnitzel with saukeraut, soup and salad. The shnitzel was overcooked and dry. (What's up with the dry theme???) But hey, the soup, albeit a tad salty was decent. What I didn't like was the fact that the salad dressings for the salad came in metal holder, which may be that they store the dressings this way and just bring it to the table. Due to our disappointment, we got dessert for free. Needless to say the black forest crumbled apart and the krontz cake was dry. We'll obviously never go back there and neither can we recommend this place!

  • Order: Dinner special, knackwurst, chicken soup, black forest, krontz cake

  • I really enjoy going here. I usually go once a month and thoroughly enjoy myself. I always go with 5-6 family members and we all have drinks and dinner. I have never had a bad meal, and i love there red cabbage!! The service is always good with smiles!! If they neede any change it would be the decor but not a big deal.

  • Some family and I went into this restaurant for dinner one evening. We're regulars at other German restaurants in Hamilton, and thought it would be interesting to compare. That turned out to be a big mistake.

The first thing I noticed was the decor; drab, dirty, and in urgent need of updating. Table seats are the type of uncomfortable metal armchairs which are usually found in the waiting room of a doctor's office. Booth seats were tolerable at best.

Our waitress was slow, inattentive, and miserable (even though there were only a handful of other diners in the room). The three of us each ordered different types of sausages which came with a choice of homefries or salad. The homefries were cold and looked more like mashed potatoes. Salad dressing was distributed from an old metal holder which was left sitting out in the open. Despite ordering different types of sausages, we all received the same thing, which looked more like a store-bought hot dog. I was puzzled as to why there was no sauerkraut included, and upon raising the issue with the waitress, was informed that sauerkraut is considered a side dish on its own, and she assumed we would only want salad or homefries (which is all she mentioned when taking orders). Any other German or Austrian restaurant I've eaten in included sauerkraut at no charge. She then, reluctantly, brought us awful sauerkraut which seemed to have been heated up in a microwave.

The food was awful and the service a disgrace. I felt compelled to apologise to my dinner guests, and it was my idea to give the Schwaben Inn a try. If you're looking for good, authentic German cuisine, LOOK ELSEWHERE.

The Schwaben Inn has been a Dundas landmark for 33 years. If the experience you are describing is entirely accurate, it is unlikely that this establishment would have had the many years of success that it has. Your posting is the only review that...

  • The food was delicious and fresh. Most meals come with a salad, soup, meat, and two sides for about $14. Drinks are cheap.

The soups (barley and cabbage for us) were great. The salads came with a selection of homemade dressings. They were the best I'd ever had. Lots of fresh bread at the table. The main meals are good portions with a delicious choice of sides. My entire party was full and very satisfied.

Our waitress was friendly and took good care of us.

Would recommend this to anyone visiting Dundas.

  • Great food and great service on a cold night, felt very comfortable.

  • Order: I started with an ice cold Dab draft and we both had delicious (&hot) cabbage soup and nice crisp salads. My wife had a huge portion of schnitzel, spatzle and turnip and I had a smoked bratwurst, homefries and red cabbage. Her meal came with the soup and salad, mine was extra but reasonable.

  • My family has been going to this place since my dad went to Mac (25+ years ago). It's been tradition that after the graduation of each person in my family from mac, we go to the schwaben inn, so it holds a special place in my heart. 3/3 so far.
