  • I've been a regular here for years, and upon reading some of the reviews I have to say that, as much as I loved it there, I understand all the issues with the customer service. However the Human Bean is now under new ownership, with new staff, so customers may find a changed dining experience. Things are cleaner, and friendlier - a great place to go with a friend for coffee or lunch. For those who have been dissapointed in the past, please think about giving the Bean another try.

  • I was hopeful...
I went in on two separate occassions. The first time I bought two coffees and the second time I had a coffee and a muffin. The coffee was fair but I wouldn’t say it was outstanding and the coffee prep area was messy. The muffin was a bit stale and tasted of artificial sweetener overload. The place is nice enough but the staff is stand-offish and cool—I don’t care whether they would warm up to you once you’d been in a few times. A customer shouldn't be made to feel that staff are doing us a favour by gracing us with their presence. This is Cobourg, not Toronto—keep it there. Where customer service is one of the first orders of business, the Human Bean fails. Based on my two visits I will not be returning.

  • I really wanted to like the Human Bean. It's the type of cool little coffee shop that I'm naturally drawn to and usually get a great meal at. Unfortunately the server was impossibly slow (as in it took us about an hour to get our food when there was no one ahead of us) and they got our orders wrong twice. (Forgot the salad and gave me ham in my "no ham please" bagel with fried egg.) The owner could have cared less about the wrong orders and left without ensuring that we had been taken care of. Food was adequate and I figured out how to help myself to the coffee (server didn't tell me). It would have been faster for me to have made my lunch myself - and at one point I felt like getting up and doing so in their open concept kitchen. This is quite possibly the worst dining experience that I'd had ever.

  • We often go to Cobourg and I love to check out new coffee places. I am quite comfortable paying a high premium for great coffee and food. I am always looking for an alternative to Starbucks, usually have organic - fair trade but it is not a deal breaker. If the coffee/food atmosphere are good I am willing to drive a fair distance for it as well. We walked in and liked the decor and so was willing to wait for service, slow as it was. The sever could care less and although I wanted to have a snack, decided against it. It was quite warm in there and I thought perhaps the grouchy severs were suffereing from the heat, but the place had not even been open that day for very long. Why are they in business if they don't like people. Customers should be respectful, however I have never heard of a place where the servers have to warm up to the PAYING CUSTOMER. If they are not personable then atleast hire staff who are - atleast if you want to stay in business. I am willing to tolerate rude behavior once or twice (we've all had bad days) if the quality is there....but mediocre coffee and ignorant staff, I don't think so. Although I did have correct change, if other customers don't perhaps it is the fault of the staff to not have enough change on hand. The businesses I have worked in rarely have difficulty providing change and if we do, we apologize for it....imagine that!
I may try this place one more time, maybe they will have had a chance to work on their etiquette. I really did want to like it, and I believe everyone deserves a second chance.

  • I have been coming to this place for a few months. This place is comparable to some of the nicest coffee shops in Toronto, and the coffee is a true cup of coffee, and the international varieties are amazing. As for the free entertainment on Fri nites, I cant believe the talent out there, and by looking around, you can see that this place has become a meeting place by many and a thee place to come for the food, coffee and award winning decor. If you come to Cobourg, don't leave without checking this place out. I come all the way from Peterborough, just to visit the Human Bean.

  • Anyone that thinks this place has good coffee really doesn't have a clue about good from bad. I've drunk coffee in Paris, Rome, Montreal, Sharm El Sheik, London, NY, Toronto .. you name it (i've travelled a lot), and I know a good coffee from a bad one, and this is a bad coffee shop. It is a shame, as it is a lovely little venue right in downtown Cobourg, but with rude indifferent staff, coffee stored in flasks and not made up fresh, fake cream on the hot chocolate, and stale cakes, it has put me off going in there ever again, and have given it a few chances over time. There are much, much better coffee shops in Cobourg, and sadly the Human Bean is not one of them.

  • Yes, the staff can be moody, but once you've been in a bit, they warm up to you and are your friends for life. The brunch is always fantastic on the weekends! Music nights are fun, great atmosphere for hanging with friends or getting some work done.

  • Order: I've had everything on the menu, the brunch is AMAZING

  • The coffee and muffin weere great but the service was very rude. They complained about having to make change from the bill i gave them and were very rude when i asked for a lid! They were snarky to reply where they were located as if everyone shouldknow. The art work and layout, however, are very nice. It's also wi-fi i believe so you can take your computer and get some work done!

  • Looked interesting! Saw the makeover show with Lynn Crawford. Nasty surprise!! This place needs a personality makeover, especially the people behind the counter. Oh by the way handling money and not washing hands, then handling food "Hello" You might want to remove things from the display counter as they age?
